Should Metroid Other M get a redo?

Honestly, I'd rather the original Other M script, the one written by Team Ninja, not the Nintendo hire.

Well, we do know that Team Ninja has never written a good game, so we have no indication that their script for Other M is anything but Dead or Alive: XTreme Zebes Volleyball.

Um, if you've played the game, beat it at 100%, and looked online for hidden content you may have missed, then you know the full thing of team ninjas plot. I'm happy to hear that the story atlest grabbed you. It did not atlest grab me.

I can only presume that the last sentence refers to the game selling, which it really didn't. Nintendo had to do crowd control after releasing the game to a chilly reception. So I'm not sure how you make it spund a subversion of the law of identity or just a cliched expression of nothin's-gonna-change cynicism, but I believe quite a few people involved in video games and media in general have been disproving that of late.

In all seriousness, Other M could get a re-boot... If it was worth it. Other M wasn't, so the new one would have to be Prime, mixed with Fusion, add a touch of Super Metriod, and completely avoid Hunters, Prime 2, and Metriod 2.

OK, so after watching Extra Credits episode on Other M it came to me that maybe Nintendo could give Other M another try. I really liked the core story of the game, but to me it felt like it was held down by horrible dialogue and some questionable gameplay choices (ie focus instead of energy pickups, no nunchuk etc). Basically, Other M felt like a lot of wasted potential. I like the core storyline of the game, ie give samus a bit of character and bridge the gap between fusion and Super Metroid, but the game itself sucked.

So, does the Escapist think that Nintendo should try Other M again? Not just a remake, but a completely new game but with the same basic story? I think they wasted a lot of potential there, and it's a pretty big blemish on an otherwise flawless series.

Why would you want a remake? Was the story really that great? I have the feeling that most others don't think so. It seems to me that they could just make the next Metroid (a sequel basically) and maybe ignore/retcon some of the things from Other M if they decide it did irreparable damage to the storyline/character.

So what? If the players collectively decide that they did a bad job, then isn't that the only metric that matters? Do we need to spare their feelings when they did a lousy job? No, I think they should just move on. Whether that means going back to the style of Prime, returning to 2D side scrollers or taking the series in a whole new direction, I just want them to move as far away from the mistakes of Other M as possible.

The problem is that it wasn't a Metroid game, not even a little. The aesthetics are more like a modern RPG (more futuristic fantasy world, less futuristic wilderness), the premise is more like Metal Gear Solid (more military schemes, less horrific space monsters), and the gameplay is more like Megaman Legends (more simplified story-based third person shooting, less Metroidvania-type atmosphere-based exploring). They couldn't even make it a Metroidvania, the genre that the series half-named, for God's sake. There's no way to fix that, unless you take the Metroid stuff out.

No. Even if the game had only one problem that could be fixed in a remake it shouldn't be done. They should take their blows, learn from them, and make another, different game. A sequel? Maybe, or just ret-con the lot. Remakes (particularly of modern games) are creatively lazy.

Just keep Team Ninja the hell away from Metroid. I thought Metroid Prime 3 started getting silly with the story but it was at an entirely acceptable level, Other M took it about 5 steps too far and managed to make it the first bad Metroid game since the series started in 1986.

Hopefully Metroid will go away for a while then come back under a new developer that knows how to introduce new elements to the franchise without completely fucking it up.
