Should Modern Warfare (and other similar 'Modern-age' FPS's) have playable female characters?

Yeah, I know I'm biting the "Y TF2 NO HAVE GURLZ" threads thunder a bit here, but it seemed more pertinent to me when I realized the irony in the title of Modern Warfare.

I mean, women are allowed into the Army, right? So, why can't they be in Modern Warfare and other similar games?

Only if it would makes sense to the story ... but for more story focused games, I really don't see the point, honestly. I can't see a screen coming up and saying "You are about to play the No Russian level. Do you want to play as a guy or a girl?"

It all depends on the game.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think women are banned from combat in the army but I'm not sure lol
EDIT; I checked woman are not allowed in direct infantry combat so that explains why there aren't many woman in Modern Warfare considering it's mainly made up of direct combat

Well, Gears 3 has female COGs. I think its more of a matter of ethics (they could get so much crap about putting females in there. I'm glad no feminist group shot out at Capcom for making female zombies in Dead Rising 2 weaker than men) and also of tradition. Americans tend to want their games to be closer to action movies, where unless the main character was supposed to be a girl, it doesn't really happen. In Japan, though... well, just look at most JRPG's (mind you, from Nintendo's IPs, only Samus is a true bad-ass). It also might lead to a lot of sexism in the shape of scantily clad outfits, some more than others. BUT your point is valid, there is no reason for why not to, really.

They dont because they are going for a realistic setting where women are not allowed to serve in combat in the U.S. Army thus making that unrealistic, and because the media would explode with something like "murder simulator teaches you to kill women"

It's made by men (mostly), played by men (mostly), and based on the military which is mostly comprised of men. In the US at least women are not allowed on the front lines. To answer the question, I don't really care but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to include playable women.

I can tell you at least in America, there aren't women in the Infantry, which are generally the people who fight on the ground. I mean, if they could work in a reasonable story that focused on MP's, then yeah, I'd see it as kinda cool to play as a female American. I'm sure other countries allow women into combat units, but America doesn't right now. I can't really think of any Western nations that allow women into their Infantry, but if someone can mention one I'll gladly chalk that one up to ignorance.

Yeah, I don't think many/any women actually go into combat.

While I see your point, the majority of the game you play as a silent pair of floating arms anyway, so it wouldn't change anything.

Because the Modern Warfare games focus on the Americans and the British, where women aren't frontline soldiers.

If the games were focused on Canadians, you would actually see more gender integrated units.

Couldn't have said it better myself and many games feature special forces characters and if women can't serve in direct infantry combat in the U.S Army then you probably won't find them in the S.A.S, Navy Seals, and such.

It's plausible, and it is a wonder why it hasn't happened yet. I'd like to see it happen, but I won't cry if it doesn't happen.

Considering the questionable approach that the games take towards accurately depicting the U.S. military, I wouldn't be surprised to see a female protagonist despite whatever the policy actually is. Hell, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Incredible Hulk serving on the front lines in the next game.

Because there is too small of a demographic for it and too many men too insecure in their own masculinity to have female characters teabagging them. JK!

I do not know, I guess because there is not enough of a demand for them in a still male oriented aea.

Because it's hard to see the boobs on your character in a FPS. Modernwarfare-esque FPS developers don't think highly of their audience and when they do plan on including females they'll either be support characters who pose in the background while you shoot people or in the case of you playing as them, they'll be in a third person shooter, with their butts hogging more camera space than the chest high walls. The one FPS I can even think of having played as a female was in Portal (Although they only did that so players could ogle over Chell's physique through the portals, so so much for that). Bottom line is that by the time females start becoming major characters in FPS's, the whole Modern-Warfare thing will have blown over and we'll be launching rocket-babies at Mecha-Cthulhu... at least that's what I'm hoping for.

It depends. No for online because then feminist groups would have something to ***** about and people would use them for hit boxes and T-bagging rather than actual character creation.
Story wise? I wouldn't mind something added.

I guess that could be an option, since there are some in the real army. But I'm pretty sure the media would go apeshit if a game did that and would starting criticizing it 4 ways to Monday.

I don't see why not. I think Modern warfare kind of dumped realism when they let single soldiers call in a NUKE for killing 25 enemy soldiers without dying.

I mean, MGS4 let you be a female character online. Sure it's 3rd person, but from a character customization aspect it should still let you choose.

Girls can't teabag in real life therefore it would be illogical to put them in any type of online multiplayer game, duh.

Seriously though, it probably has something to do with the policies about no women on the front lines in the real US and British army. And I'm not trying to be sexist, but I can't really see playing as a girl soldier in a Call of Duty game, although that's just me.
