He absolutely should return it. Scholarships are supposed to help you pay for college, they shouldn't be treated as prize money. If you clearly don't need the help, let it go to someone who does. I don't care if he "earned it". Wanna give him a blue ribbon or a gold star? Fine.

Who cares whether he earnt it, as Mortai said, he's not exactly providing a service that's actually worth pay.
And as I told Mortai, its a business move. You want to secure him to come to your school. There are a lot of places he could go for college with his grades and his football skills and you wanna make sure he sticks to your school. How do you do this? By offering the teen who wants to break away from his father's shadow a chance for a fully paid college experience. That 50 thousand is chump change compared to how much he will be able to generate as a player in his 4 years. Heck, he could probably generate that much money for the athletic department in a season if he plays well.

No. Not only did he earn it, but having his dad pay his way all his life is only going to turn him into a spoiled brat.

Personally I think it's nice to see that he's taking control of his life and working hard, something you don't see many celebrities do.

The fact that this is an issue is disgusting. It's like if he got a job, people would be saying "He doesn't deserve to get that job! He shouldn't be able to work for his money, because his dad already has money, he doesn't need it!"

Reminds me of the occupy wall street issue. If somebody earns the money, they earned the money, rich or poor.

And you can quantify how important? I don't deny that some sort of competitive pass time would probably be good. I am doubtful that we need it to the degree we have it. Or to the degree it gets paid.
How can you be doubtful that we need sport to the degree we have it? If we didn't need it, we wouldn't have it.

The fact is we live in a capitalist society, and therefore the people decide what we do and don't need. We keep paying to watch football, basketball, soccer etc. and thefore how can you say that it doesn't deserve what it gets? That's not how capitalism works. I might not like Apple, but it's hard to say they don't deserve their revenue.

I think you guys across the pond need to work on how much it fucking costs to get a decent education. That's quite a massive sum of money.
Yes, yes we do. Our cost of tuition is absolutely unfathomable. :<

I say the money should go to someone who needs it. Scholarships are meant to help people and it's helping nobody if it goes to this kid.
I agree with this. Good on him for wanting to earn his way, but there are people out there whose fathers aren't rich musical artists who ought to have the chance to go to school.

In a way I think he deserves the scholarship if he earned it. At the same time, his cheap ass father ought to pay for school for him.

On one hand scolarships are for people that struggle economically, on the other hand his dad is wealthy, i think he should return it or give it to charity but if he decides not to do so i respect his decision, it's his damn money after all.

Chaptcha: What is your level of education? Answers: None, some school, high school, college, graduate school.

How does the captcha knows if im telling the truth? I answered none.

It kind of surprises me that people see the word "scholarship" and assume that it's meant for people who struggle financially. That just isn't always the case, and it wasn't the purpose of this particular scholarship.

My school had academic "scholarships" which were awarded based solely on merit, "assisted places" for people who wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford a place, and a "hardship fund" for people whose families suddenly found themselves in a difficult financial situation (if a parent lost their job, for example). Seemed to work well.

To me, scholarships have always been rewards for merit. Sometimes people with wealthy parents earn them, and that's fine.

You realize that this is exactly the reason why colleges are so expensive. There is so much money available from scholarships and grants that colleges know that they can just dip into the government money and line their pockets, so they do. The more the money the scholarships give, the higher prices get. When my parents went to college, there wasn't as much scholarship money to go around. They could afford to work their way through a years tuition through their summer jobs.

It should be a scandal that P. Diddy's son get a scholarship. P. Diddy is fabulously wealthy and there is NO GOOD REASON why he can't pay his own way. I don't care about merit based and need based. P. Diddy has $550 million dollars.

My stance is thus, I don't think that he should be 'forced' to give the money back. He should not have been awarded the money in the first place. Now that he has it, we can all just sit back and be jealous that money taken through taxes from the hard-working people of California is being given to the filthy rich.

Fair play to the lad, he earnt it and he should keep it. Those scholarships are there to attract top athletes to their colleges, regardless of their backgrounds, and it appears that's exactly what it has done.

Tough call. Since he earned it, he's well within his rights to keep it. Still, since he in no way needs it, it would be a nice gesture to return it.

It seems like this is a thing, so lets discuss.

I personally think that if the kid made good grades and was in football, he deserves to reap the rewards from both. We aren't talking about the kid asking for money from the gov't to buy a Porsche, the kid legitimately worked for these scholarships.

So, in your thoughts, should he keep the money even with his family's stupefying wealth?
Scholarships are not need based they are earned based. He worked hard to earn his scholarship despite how much money his father has, and he deserves ever cent.

If the kid earned it then he should keep it. Of course it would be fantastic press if Diddy just turned around and gave some inner city kid a 54k free ride.

It sounds like he earned it.
I'm sure there are plenty of rich(er) white kids with scholarships.
On that note, it would be very cool of his dad to make a donation to the school too.
