Yeah, I got drug into that about 4 years ago when I was hanging out in the library in Wyoming alot. I can't remember much about it, other than it being like Runescape with a cap on F2P, but the sub being only 5 or so a month. What I do remember is roaming around in a ship and being epic in general and running circles around bigger ships :D

I've honestly thought about looking for it again, but I already play tons of games...

There's a huge hole in the market for something like that.
'tis a bit outdated but there is the Pirates of the Caribbean game. It's exactly what you're looking for. The only issue is that you need to get used to the controls.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-PC/dp/B0000AHOA3 Take a look.
I recent dug this out again, I'd forgotten how surprisingly good it is despite POTC being shoehorned in.

It was a Sea Dogs sequel until Disney went looking for someone to make a POTC game to tie in with Curse of the Black Pearl release. The Black Pearl was added into the main story & Keira Knightly did some minor narrator voiceover work. So there's not a lot to connect it to POTC if you don't like the movies.

It's kinda like how it's been with films, pirate films became a joke that no-one wanted to take a risk making (Elliot & Rossio of the writers of POTC originally pitched it to Disney when they were working on Aladdin in the early 90s and Disney wouldn't touch it), same way it was with westerns really. There's not a lot of pirate games out there that aren't tie-ins to POTC and a hell of a lot less recent games - Port Royale had a sequel come out fairly recently didn't it? Though I know nothing about it.

The Golden Age of Piracy is one of my favourite 'pieces' of history so I'm complete biased saying that yes, we need more pirate games. Most people I see say that the naval parts of AC3 were the best piece of that game, so there's definitely a market to expand that to a full game. Whether the pirates are the 'good' guys or the 'bad' guys... I forsee a badly implemented moral choice system that will make Yahtzee rant like never before.

I only remembered it today when I was playing Sid Meier's. I am considering giving it another go with my friends but that is fingers crossed hoping the servers are still up, but the game was brilliant from what I remember.

Well tell me how it goes, and I may just join ya some. I also remember you got to, more or less, name your ship, which is completely awesome!

Pirates? Nah, I'm not that interested in that prospect. If I need a pirate fix, I play Port Royale 3 and plunder some Spanish galleys.

What I do want though? Dinosaurs!

Drop the zombies already and gimme some dinosaurs. Remember that Jurassic Park game on the original Xbox? That was fun.

Pretty much every single pirate game I've ever played has come juuuust short of the line of being great, mostly by one glaring flaw. I'd love to have a pirate game as wonderful in that genre as, say, Baldur's Gate is in RPGs or Deus Ex is in FPS/RPG.

Much to my surprise the servers are still up. I think I'll have to play it at some point when there are no steam games that cry out to me when I turn my computer on. Here's the link if you ever need it : http://piratesonline.go.com/welcome

I honestly think the best pirate game was the pirate section in sly raccoon 3. You could actually just sail around unlike in AC3 and board ships whenever instead of in specific mission once again unlike AC3 but I did like the sailing missions in AC3. Also your first mate in AC3, Robert Faulkner is voiced by the guy who played Mr Gibbs in Pirates of the Caribbean, Kevin McNally who is from Bristol like me and Blackbeard. Whoa loads of piratey connections there.

May have been mentioned, but Bethesda dabbled in this years ago and made an amazing game called Pirates of the Caribbean (had nothing to do with the films), however since then there hasn't been anything interesting around in my opinion.

Sly Raccoon 3? I have never heard of that game. Can you give me a rundown of it?

There's Puzzle Pirates.
It's one of the best designed MMOs I've ever played, and the only one I don't regret my time with.

The game is really good, but I seem to always get banned every time I play it  I have been subscribed to that for about a year and a half in the past, it has a really good structure and doesn't follow the traditional mmo level up and get skills which I really hate, and there's no fetch quests :D

What do you mean? I see pirates all the time in my brown military shooters!

But seriously, the world needs more pirate games. Although I wouldn't want a pirate game that focuses exclusively on sailing the seas and whatnot. A sort of RPG style pirate game seems like it could work really well (I've heard of Risen 2 but most of the feedback seemed negative) if done correctly.

I second this. Extra awesome-points for the battle controls, where Murray steers the ship, Sly runs all over the deck firing the cannons and patching up the ship as it gets damaged - and the player seamlessly controls both of them PLUS the camera at the same time! Getting that setup working anywhere near as smoothly as it does must have been a MAJOR pain for the developers to pull off!

I would buy the shit out of a CDPR Pirate game with AC3 ship combat(But minus the whole everyone crouches on deck and your ship avoids damage thing, because that was stupid and made no sense.)

Also Obsidian games could probably make a good pirate game, New Vegas considering, as long as the gameplay was alright.

I would like to see the Assassin's Creed III engine combined with some sort of potential fleet & crew management system. Perhaps you can have members of your own crew gain experience and eventually be trusted enough to captain their own ship in your armada.

Suddenly you're no longer a pirate captain but a mercenary force hired by the very merchants you used to raid, protecting them from foreign privateer attacks while your letter of marque gives you permission to hunt those very foreign ships. Eventually finding yourself on the side of a great naval battle/war working for the side you pledged allegiance to.

Alestorm? ALESTORM!

AVAST YE!

OT: Yes, we do need more games with pirates, a game were you could join a pirate crew and rise to the top of the crew and captain your own pirate fleet would be brilliant, with elements of strategy and management along with solid action it would be utterly fantastic.

This idea has my approval.

Whitebeard also approves. And you just can't argue with Whitebeard.

Can't argue with a guy who makes Chuck Norris look like a pansy!

OT: I would love a good pirate game, raiding ships, finding treasure, naval battles, you can choose to become a privateer if the government sees you as an asset, or you can have them see you as a threat, have a hideout, upgrade it, have towns your pirates are welcome and trusted in, other towns where they fear and loathe you, you can throw gold (doubloons) on the ground which makes passing people happy and will vouch for you if you get into small trouble, declare war on other pirates, obtain a bounty by causing more trouble on the seas and land!

My god, I WANT ONE!
Whitebeard. I wanted to post a demotivational poster involving him. None of them are worthy of the name of Whitebeard. Whitebeard makes Chuck Norris look like Robin Williams.

There are no words fit enough to define the manliness that is Whitebeard.

Finally! Finally there is Punk Hazard! Zoro has already decimated a Dragon. This arc is gonna be fun to watch :D

I know right, I want such a game now it sounds like an absolute blast of a time, I doubt it will ever happen though, which is deeply unfortunate because I'd play the hell out of it ):
