is anybody else fed up with too much brown, gray and black being the only colours for the majority of games

as zero punctuation would put it 'the dirt spectrum'

Some games like Fallout 3 would seem to have an excuse for looking like dirt due to the nuclear apocalypse and all, but even places, like Tenpenny Tower, still aren't that colorful.

...and now to a statement I pulled out of my ass:
Maybe you shouldn't expect so much colour from some games. Gears of War, Fallout 3, GTA IV and Far Cry 2 are all going for a gritty atmosphere. Colours are frightening to their target audience who may percieve them as being "gay" or "for kids".

Tired of gray and brown? Then play some Mario or Pokemon and stop complaining. Games that are often criticized for being gray or brown are usually that way for a reason. How about if Marcus Fenix wore bright red armor in Gears of War? Or maybe Nico goes through his entire mission of revenge wearing a bright purple suit? Maybe Gordon Freeman should wear a safety-orange environment suit in Half-Life? Oh wait, sorry.

In gaming, you vote with your money. If you don't like gray, don't buy games that decorate with it. Complaining on an internet forum is about as useful as shouting at your television.
Wait, you mean the people on, "What Not to Wear" can't here me?!

But really, what are you looking for out of a game? I mean, if you aren't looking for grit, don't play a gritty game. I don't often find this problem in any game that's not going for grit.

And what about Oblivion? The night sky is purple.

The grayness represents realism, so what their saying is that real life just plain sucks.
Isn't that why we play video games?

Now, I don't mind the darkness and stuff so much, but I would be quick to buy a game that's actually got some color to it, so long as people actually liked it. I.E. Not Pokemon.
Color's just something that they're not putting as much of, because what's big now is post-apocalyptic stuff. Maybe if that went out of style and something really damn awesome and colorful at the same time happened, and became a trend, we'd have something going for us, but the post-apoc stuff has been in for a while, and will probably continue to be.

Also, the colors is what helps to make the few colorful games so unique.

You know something the British a few hundred years ago wore bright red uniforms. There also is the idea that certain types of uniforms may inspire fear in the enemy simply because of the aesthetics employed in the design of the uniform.

OK, here's an idea!
Let's take Dead Space, Gears of War, Resident Evil, F.E.A.R. and all those other games...
And paint them! The aliens will be pink, the walls green, and the main character PURPLE!

That's why there's all that gray.
Oh, and it's also to be realistic, or to set a mood.

Upon entering the First World War the French army still wore bright red trousers I believe... making them the biggest targets on the battlefield, they were very reluctant to ditch the 'traditional French' uniform but realised it had to go except on the parade square.

I'm not against colour in games at all, having spent the last week or so playing LBP and the new Prince of Persia... but the types of game mentioned above (Gears, Fallout, GTA IV etc) are all attempting to emulate realism in gun play... where it fits because bright red pants get you shot in the arse.

If you want something more light hearted give Saints Row 2 a shot, or PoP and LBP... as mentioned, you vote with your wallet.

It doesn't even make sense for Fallout, as 200 years is ample time for trees to regrow.

Well, that wouldn't work for F.E.A.R, its a horror game for chrissakes.

I totally agree I mean I don't dislike the greytones in games like Gears of war or Fallout 3 or any urban environment set game. Even Assassin's creed was grey and dirt colored.
But there are far too many games that still hop on the Doom 3, Quake 4 "look at us we cans have pretty next gen light effects in the dark" bandwagon.

It's something I see in western games, most Japanese games sport bright colors even if the themes aren't that happy or even remotely childish.
Bioshock was a very dark shooter but still it had lots of colors compared to most shooters these days.
And even the world as displayed in "The witcher" was dark and gritty, still it wasn't all grey.
So I like To see more color in gaming, please.

It would have improved both of those games to no end.

I can count the games that actually have universally drab colour schemes on one hand. The whole 'IT'S TEH GREY!' thing is just the latest gamehate bandwagon. Not only are games too grey/brown, they're also too dark, and they have too much bloom. Three years ago people were shrieking about coloured lighting, now they're shrieking about the lack of coloured lighting. Jesus.

Also Portal and Mirrors Edge are far too white. Tsk tsk.

I think grey/dark graphics hide flaws better, Halo 3 had a very colorful design but the graphical flaws where magnified(so it seemed, just thought I'd throw that out). Also I would assume it takes out some work for developers.

I think the dirt tones are because most next gen games (on the ps3 and 360) follow the "grim and gritty" formula, The problem is that there's just so many games going for the uber realistic feel that it stands out to much. What the next gen needs is more carefree games, those tend to have bleed your eyes out color to them.
