If you don't like games with gray and brown as the main colours, then don't buy them. Very simple, gritty games have sold well and continue to sell well. As long as the developers are making money, then they have no reason to change their ways.

Contrary to popular belief, game developers don't come to the escapist to decide the direction that their games are going to take. Personally, I like the dark colour schemes, so I'm gonna keep buying games like Gears 2, because I like the gritty colours.

I don't know. I've never much noticed it- in GOW it's a war-time location, usually rather bombed out or otherwise old and abandoned, and such things do tend to lost their color over time.

Okay, I'll admit, I joke about games being too dark and gray from time to time. However, most of these games are that way because the gray/dark color scheme fits. I mean, can you imagine seeing Gears or F.E.A.R. or Killzone 2 or whatever with lighter color schemes? It just wouldn't really seem right.

Actually, half the time in Gears, you're in a cave underground, and the graphics guys just forgot that rocks can look pretty, too. =P

Gears of War: Grey and drab - criticised for being grey and drab and dull looking and so on.
Halo 3: Bright and colorful - criticised for having outrageous colours, guns that look like children's toys, etc.

You ever hear the phrase "you can't please all of the people, all of the time"?

As others have said, usually the color palette is used to set a mood (or at least, it should be). A game dealing with serious matters, such as COD 4 or Assassin's Creed, tends to have a more muted look, befitting the tone of the game.

Games that are more light-hearted usually have brighter colors.

You see this all the time in film. The Indiana Jones movies are light-hearted adventure tales, like Uncharted. Both are very vibrant, color-wise.

A movie like the Godfather (or its video game equivalent) usually has a more under-saturated look.

I'm fed up with next-gen graphics entirely, and not because of their color, but because they're all anybody in the industry gives a crap about anymore. A Bluray disc holds something like 60 gigabytes of data, and here we are loading it to the brim with graphics instead of good storytelling or fun. I haven't played any of the Final Fantasy series in ages, for example, because it's all the same 25 hours of playtime repeated ad nauseum just looking more and more dolled up each time.

This might also explain why I don't like it when women wear makeup.

I want a game that I, as an adult now, can get lost in like when I was 10 hacking away at Final Fantasy 4, and that (for me) requires a level of epic storytelling I do not think anyone has crossed yet. I want a game that's so long and immersive that it takes 120 hours to complete WITHOUT sidequests for silly ultimate artifacts that only help me beat a game I already know I will win.

That's another thing -- I want a game that will kick my ass and make me love it. The only game that does this now is the original Castlevania for the NES, the only game I ever played that I never beat without cheating. :( @#$!@#$ Grim Reaper gets me every. single. time.

as zero punctuation would put it 'the dirt spectrum'
Play better games:

You think a Gonzo would know to put these in "click me" boxes for PC's that take forever to load up pages..

..Hypothetically speaking of course =p

In some games it's necessary to the atmosphere, but it is nice now and then to play a game with a bit of variety, and not have squint at something, and say "Hang on. Is that the next ledge I have to jump to or a shadow that will cause me to fall into a bottomless pit?"

If you expect that kind of immersion and length, then you're going to be disappointed for a LONG time.
