90% of the time when I either tell someone or they hear from someone else that I love anime, they either think I like DBZ or Yugioh/Pokemon or they think I watch porn. And I can't ever convince them otherwise. Anyone else deal with this same problem?

I deal with the opposite.. when I tell people I hate anime they think I just hate japanesse culture, or I'm just a mean person... hell I've been cussed out because I said I hate anime, I think me and you should trade places.

I wonder why they do that. You'd draw contempt for dismissing all anime anyway. Why bring Japanese culture into it?

They do not I, I simply say I think I would enjoy orginal Anime, you know, the books and non-edited anime, but I just don't have the time to look it up. But these people almost always say they are Japanesse culture experts, no joke and they're only 15, and that if I don't like the American edits then I would totally hate the Japanesse version, and that I probably would hate Japanesse culture entirely...

I just usually walk away from teh stupidity..

Well, I dismiss all anime because I sincerely dislike the art style (I know different draughtsmen have different style, but they stick to similar formulas)

These two sides to the argument have struck me as bizzare. I argue that if you like it, then good for you. If you don't then shut up. I've always been curious about Anime, but never quite gotton into it

That's what happens when Xenophobia comes in. Just remind them of that and call them The Last Man or something else insulting to Western Culture. It just shows how much of douchebags humans are.

Meh. I don't like anime, but I don't care if someone else does. Just don't expect me to have a clue about Bleach or anything.

I don't have a reason to tell anyone that I like anime so I've never really experienced it before. But I like to think everyone's an idiot and make it my business to not tell people things I know they'll use against me.

And we have to deal with that side mission on Saints Row 2. I can't remember it, but it was you driving a hooker around dodging news vans. Anyways, a fat girl gets into the car to have sex with the hooker, and all while your driving you can hear her talking about the costumes they are supposedly wearing ("Hey, you got cum on my angel wings") and other comments ("If they see that picture, they'll never let me into the convention")

Ah. Yeah, that's pretty stupid.

In that case, I'll spare my usual litany of Ai Yori Aoshi, X 1999, Trigun, Crayon Shin-chan, Yugioh, Nana, Steam Boy, Spirited Away, and One Piece.

Or at least, I'll avoid any of my usual underlying contempt.

You lost me at anime.

Since I don't have your experiences, I'll just give you the general advice I give everyone.
Don't be a *****.
People like or dislike many different things in this world. It's best to ignore them.

My girl does a radio show and she had a guest on who pointed out finding out his perspective girl is in to Anime would be an instant deal-breaker. Now my girl knows I like anime though I don't ever watch it with her 'cause she ain't a fan. She likes Zombies, I like zombie movies about as much as she likes anime so it works out.

Point is she asked me if that bugged me, or if it pissed me off, or something similar. To which I replied, I like all kinds of stupid crap, and I'm sure that guy does too. We can't all like the same stupid crap, so me may as well enjoy different stupid crap. If peeps think you love DBZ, who cares? They can't make fun of you for the anime you DO like because they don't even know enough about anime to know what stupid anime to make fun of.

Just like I don't know enough about Zombie movies to know what stupid zombie movies a true fanatic would like that I could make fun of. Just blow it off and keep going, that's all there is to it. :)

@RadioActiveChimp: Cleary you watch Dragon Ball Z Porn.

Pretty much this, just look at the ex-japanophile thread from a few days back. And don't forget the Yahtzee sheep.

But yeah, while I haven't really had this problem, it is annoying how most people either think of Naruto/Yugioh/other drawn out localized anime or hentai. Really, tell them to try series like Cowboy Bebop or stuff that wasn't bought here to sell toys before they judge all anime.
