90% of the time when I either tell someone or they hear from someone else that I love anime, they either think I like DBZ or Yugioh/Pokemon or they think I watch porn. And I can't ever convince them otherwise. Anyone else deal with this same problem?
I find that if these people have preconceptions about japanese animation, they probably have preconceptions about other things as well.
I wouldn't say they have a problem with anime, I'd say they have a problem with making generalisations about things they themselves are not interested in. What sticks in their minds is what is most sensational (sex and immaturity is what they remember).
I have alot of similar preconceptions about things like accountancy, I focus on boring number crunching rather than shafting the system and I'm probably missing out on alot of money because of that.
So I say don't try to attack their reasons for not liking anime, they're nebulous reasons and have a habit of changing or multiplying when you pin one down and dismiss it - you'll sound like a fanboy if you do.
Best advice? Dunno, maybe find some common ground, 'yugioh sucks', 'anime hypersexuality is a done-to-death trope', 'spirited away was kinda neat'? Don't try to interest them in anything they haven't already seen.

I don't really have that problem the people that know about anime think of probably there faves and the people that don't probably thing of... cage fighting or something like that.

also to the bickering of everyone else, I've had extended discussions with people that don't like anime and it usually doesn't matter to them or at least where I live if you like or don't like something as long as your not a totally jerk to the people with contrary beliefs you should be fine! also if you don't like anime you should also stop downing anime that's usually the actual reason people normally think you don't like the Japanese culture as a whole because your rude about something they made!

also this is the escapist people this is a nerd website! There's no reason to say your nerd-hood is better than mine, like some kind of fascist jerk! I don't go around saying people who go around saying people that play D and D are satanist, or that people who watch Star trek want to date a green woman, so don't go saying that because I like anime I'm immature or a perv!!!

I don't ever have that problem. I think you should just talk to more intelligent people.

It's because people have these well ingrained opinions based off other people's beliefs with out doing any research on their own. You wanna ***** go talk to science and the shit its gotta put up with.

Yep. And if you can't convince them, don't waste anymore of your time with those morons. Anime comes in different 'shapes and styles'; to each their own.
dont i know it i got into anime for the main reason that it had plenty of scifi and fantasy stories something that is lacking in american television and though i have expanded what anime i would watch scifi and fantasy are still my favorites
