Right, so there's a lot of spoilers on the internet. It's a fact of life, but seeing as we're a gaming community, and a rather intellectual and considerate one I like to think, doesn't it make sense to avoid spoiling games for each other.

We all know that most Escapists are students, with somewhere around 33% being full time employed based on most of the "How old are you" and "what do you do for a living" polls which means a large quantity of us will play though our games pretty damn quickly due to spare time. Plenty of us are still in high school too. All of that is great but I think many of the community have forgotten (or simply never realised) that spoiling a game that's less than a month old is a fucking horrible thing to do.

I'm obviously upset by the DA2 spoilers that're floating around, and to be honest, with all of the topics going around about it, some are bound to pop in here and there, but I've not had time to finish it and I've seen no less than 5 spoilers in the last half hour on this site. Most from Act 3.

I've also seen ME2 spoilers and ME spoilers. I know ME is old, but so what? Just because someone hasn't played it don't tell them something that could ruin a game for them.

I know that I personally have a somewhat bloated hatred of spoilers (I won't bother reading a book if I know what happens. It just makes me spend the whole time waiting for it. Which is why I don't watch novel-flim adaptations until I've read the book first.) but surely there are others who care at least a little?

I'm not saying don't ever mention "Would you kindly?" because it's a great part of gaming culture (by the way, I can't bring myself to play that game after my brother fucked it for me, was still up to that guy who wants photos when he burst out about "Would you kindly?".)
But don't explain things, or you could even just put them in spoiler tags.

Also, "But it's an old game" doesn't excuse spoilers, Planescape: Torment is an old game, I'd be willing to bet that maybe 10% of escapists who've played it only did so after hearing about it from older people who played it new.

So can we please get some spoiler tags happening in the forums?

Do people even care?
thats why you just gotta avoid reading about thease games at all, Its the only sure way

yeah its eally really annoying but for me whos a little nurotic when it comes to spoilers its nessicary

I just only really skiped the first few lines of your post to avoid DA2 spoilers and I probably wont read the rest of thease posts (in regards to that game I feel the damage is done since everyones bitching about it so much, I will try not to let a bunch of haters dampen my enjoyment, but its still annoying)

I also hate spoilers. I am still getting around to playing Kotor and am no where near touching Mass Effect yet.

The Bioshock twist is a good example. Most jaw-dropping twist I've ever seen in a game (by which I mean literally jaw-dropping). I managed to avoid even the slightest spoiler there, and was so very glad I did.
I still haven't got that far in Bioshock yet. It got far too frustrating for me after

Eh, I've found this forum to be pretty good in that regard.

Also, if you had a game spoiled by clicking on a thread specifically regarding that game then you only have yourself to blame.

I can understand that, a fairly major part of the experience is the twist. I've not been able to replay Bioshock despite enjoying it a lot; there's something missing without the intrigue.

About Spoiler: That's an interesting bit of the game, quite fun, but overall irrelevant to the plot...which is a shame. Kinds of shows it too, is intrusive if you just want the story.

As per everything quoted on here, XKCD. Except for the last bit, not sure where that's from but I accidentally laid that spoiler on someone the other day. I'm sorry but how does someone get to be 21 without having seen Pulp Fiction, Fight Club or Aliens?
A very very very big rock. As for the last part of that, it's actually the hidden text when you hover over the image for that certain one.

I had the Half-Life 2: Episode Two ending spoiled here while I was playing the goddamn thing and I have been SEEKING REVENGE EVER SINCE! ...well, not really. I tend to not talk about specifically spoiler-heavy stuff. I mean, as far as I'm concerned you can't "spoil" an experience - if I say "Samuel L Jackson has a wallet that says "Bad Mother Fucker" on it", that isn't a "spoiler".

Revealing twists, that's spoiling. But saying, for example, "the bad guy dies and it was pretty cool," is not.

If I don't want to hear/see spoilers, I don't look at anything about the game, it's simple and it works. You just can't trust people on the Internet.
I think the only thing that got spoiled for me was in Modern Warfare 2, but I read it, and then I was only 1 minute away from the bit I got spoiled, so it made little difference to me.

Spoilers have no lasting period.

Easy as that.
I agree. Hell, I had finally gotten around to buying FF 7 to see what it was all about (since a lot of people praise it,) half a year ago, and I had gotten no further than to the Golden Saucer before I accidentally stumbled upon a spoiler at this very site under a topic of "great gaming moments" or something like that...
Someone said that Aeris dies in a cutscene later on...
I still haven't bothered playing FF 7 after that.

People need to be more careful when throwing around spoilers, no matter how old a game is...

I never got why people care about spoilers. I don't. You can flat-out retell me the whole movie/book and I'll still watch it/read it despite knowing what's going to happen. All I care about is how it happens and whatever you tell me, you can't go over every detail, so I'll still have something to gain.

Spoiler's aren't too bad, If you know what you're doing then you should be able to avoid them while you playing the game, unless someone deliberatly goes out of the way to spoil something for you (just like a friend went and did for me on a film (which was surrogates, by the way) which he decided to be a bit devious and only half-spoil the ending, at the end I was shouting his name into the air waving my fists)

It's better than youtube, I purposely avoided any information about the story of heavy rain, and had it all ruined by some dick youtube commentor, and now I can't forget the name of the killer.

No. Other people don't care about your gaming experience. I got spoiled for God Of War III. The only thing you can do is avoid everything from reviews to comments. For spoiler free reviews, try IGN and....well, here. Avoid YouTube at all costs, along with GT and Gamespot.

You won't believe how hard it was to stay spoiler free for Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2. For a whole fucking year.

Compared to other sites, the Escapist folks are actually quite respectful in terms of spoilers.
Tell that to this kind of people...
