Silent hill, as you know, is getting an HD makeover, so now people can play the game that me (if you know me) and Yahtzee and more are always talking about.

I've just watched a comparison video between the old voices and the new voices. Despite some of the (somewhat just) uproar, they actually sound pretty good, tell me if you agree.

A little more *raises hand* ACCCTTIINNG!, dont you agree? I dont like pizzaboys voice and the wifes voice doesnt fit at all, but others dont sound too bad.....maybe. Im looking forward to it, while others are not, as you can see in the video.

Silent hill has always been plagued with some pretty bad voice acting, which is actually part of the charm, it seems. Of course, the difference between a game with charming faults and bad game is that the other parts are really good. The defects usually become part of the characters. From what you gather in the way Harry talks in Silent Hill 1, it seems its not just hes very brave hes just.......too stupid to stop? "look, we are evil, and were TRYING TO KILL YOU FOREVER!" "Look, i dont know what youre saying, im just looking for my daughter" to paraphrase....

And one of my favorite catchphrases of all time...

Huh.

Radio.

Whats going on with that radio?

That just barely comes second to "WHAT IS A MAN?" from Castlevania.

Thankfully, thats not going to be remade. I put my foot down on that one.

The thing is, it does cross the line between "thats just how that character sounds" to "....thats pretty bad but i just have to ignore to play this really good game". The dialogue isnt the only thing to silent hill, nor would some people say the most important part. Not like theres 60 hours of cutscenes. But the ones that are in there....are pretty important. James from SH2 sounds whiny, which hes SUPPOSED to be, and there was a couple of parts me and my friends actually LAUGHED OUT LOUD at his acting....which pretty much settles it right there, probably. So im looking for this, but still a little sad. If you watch a TV show and they replace a characters actor, they ARE going to seem like a new person, better actor or not. But is that the same? Seems like we gather more about the personality from the town ITSELF and what its turned into, rather then their voices.

I also noticed that they didnt show Silent Hill 3, which has probably the best voice acting in the series, from Heather herself. But, probably gonna fall in love with the new voice, despite my complaining.
Plus, going to bring in a whole new generation of Silent Hill fans to GAGA over the series again, perhaps inspiring better sequels with the interest!

What do you guys think? IS the acting actually BETTER then the whole acting? By all accounts, they actually only redid it to not pay the old actors, lol. (Edit) Im still not actually sure. James's wife sounds a bit...off, as well.

I like it!
Not sure if the people making the remake have the qualifications for it but if they do a good job it doesn't matter.
SH2 is my favorite [even though I never finished it, watched a Lord Vega Lets play]
game.
I also hope the new silent hill does it right. >.<

I don't like the new silent hill 2 voices I think Mary/Maria sounds like a guy and Eddie just sounds completely unfitting.

I think the voices sound much worse than in the original. They either lack emotion altogether, or the VA is overacting (case in point: Eddy). The original voice acting wasn't exactly stellar, so I can see why they wanted to re-record everything, but I don't understand how they didn't realise they're fucking it up even more.

It's not bad, it's just different. People don't like different. I played both 2 and 3 and honestly I'm not worried. People will nit pick it. That is what they do. However i am still going to buy it. It looks and sounds fine.

...It's not that bad. I expected so much worse. I'm not exactly jumping for joy, but it's pretty good. I can see why they re-recorded everything and I think that's the only thing they're changing, so I'm still really looking forward to it's release somewhen.

James just doesn't sound like James... he sounds more like Henry.
I wasn't even aware of a Silent Hill HD though, so hey, no complaints here.

The voices sound pretty good and i´m not gonna complain. But i´m used to the old ones and it´s a bit weird to see how the characters´ personalities have somehow shifted through these changes in the voice. I´m glad a new generation of gamers will be able to experience the awesomeness of Silent Hill so it´s all good.

Meh, I like the original voice overs better. Personally I thought the voice acting in Silent Hill 3 was pretty good. Not sure if I'm looking forward to the rerecording of that.

The only one that was really wrong was James. He sounded way too aggressive talking to Maria.

Oh wait, and Eddie. I swear that's Gaara/Asura/War's voice actor. I could tell that grunt a mile away.

It's been proven time and time again that gamers hate change, regardless of its nature. Change is always bad.

This really only goes to prove this even further.

It seems okay. I'm still not thrilled with Eddies voice (it seems like the guy here is trying to force the impression of a nut-job, rather than someone who sounds normal but underneath is really messed up). I can see Mary/Maria's new voice working in some spots but not working in others, and while I was sceptical of James' voice, I realised that its actually not that bad and may actually work in most scenes. It certainly will be jarring because it isn't what we're used to, but at the same time it seems fine to me (and again, maybe they'll include the option to have original voices)

The new voice actors aren't that bad but I'll still miss the original actors. The under acting actually added to the atmosphere, made it so even during the quieter cut scenes things weren't quite as they seemed.

In other words, gamers are a bunch of needy little shits that are constantly blinded by nostalgia, and will reject ANY kind of change, whether it's good or bad.

And some of these responses only goes to prove this even further.

Yeah, like it was purposefully awkward, right? Nothing felt quite right.

Well, Silent Hill 2 had horrible voieceacting. I mean, it's probably my favourite game of all time but i really can't defend the voive acting, it was just amateurish. So... yeah, i'm happy that they change it.

You know I made a thread about this and it only got one reply :(
Anyway, the new voice acting blows, while james and maria are technically better, they sound out of place. Everyone else just sucks

The older stuff: Better fitting, yet more awkward.

The newer stuff: Slightly more emotive and a bit more natural but OH MY HEAVENS WHAT DID THEY DO TO JAMES' VOICE!?
