Speaking of which, I love seeing the rest of my character's body when I look down. It really adds to a good sense of immersion and orientation, and more FPS games need this. I mean, for fuck's sake, Metal Gear Solid 4 did this, and it was primarily third-person!
I feel the same. It's always nice knowing you're more than just a disembodied pair of arms and hands. I like it even more when your character actually reaches out and interacts with the objects they use, like pressing a button, rather than telekinetically activating it.

Further bonus points if your character also casts a shadow[footnote]F.E.A.R. and Escape From Butcher Bay are the only games I've played that have this[/footnote] and/or they have a reflection in shiny objects, particularly mirrors.
You would both like the game Prey. That game has reflections of your character in mirrors, and you use your hand to activate things. Also, BioShock 2 has character shadows. It's quite cool. I think Prey might have as well.

2K releases a lot of atmospheric FPS games.

The bark button in Okami. I could not go near an NPC without a friendly bark as a greeting or approach an animal with yapping away at it like a lupine sun goddess possessed. For similar reason the fart/burp button from GTA2.

Both mapped to the circle button. I guess sometimes developers just really don't have a use for it.

Emotes in League. Laugh bait strats OP. I find it really sad in DOTA 2 that when i'm sitting in lane doing nothing but farming/harassing/praying for random crits because lol Phantom Assassin, hitting Space centres my camera instead of laughing...

End every single TF game with "Only two Jokers in the deck, and I get dealt you"

Swag.

Not to mention Ezreal dances to Hare Hare Yukai... Fucking awesome.

Cute little easter eggs such as in Halo 3's "RB to flip... wait, what? How did you do that?" when you flip an elephant.

Definitely this. It was one of those things that impressed me about Halo 2 and The Darkness was the ability to see you legs and torso. It just gives you a sense of presence in the game rather than just being a floating gun

I'd also say the ability to pick up and move objects around in Elder Scrolls and Fallout. I just finding random things and putting them in my house. In Fallout 3 I collected money and made a huge pile of it on bed. You can't just program fun times like that

Ridiculous amounts of environmental interactivity. You know, where pretty much any object can be interacted with in any way? I.E. walk over to a lamp and you can turn it on and off, run over to a radio and you can change the stations or turn it off, turn the TV on and off, tug on a beer tap, turn on a microwave, flush a toilet, etc. etc.

It's a totally unnecessary feature, but I absolutely adore it when a game allows you to do that.

In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, there is a cat that you can find on the beach of the second level. No matter how much you slash your sword at it, it will dodge everything you do. We are talking about a sword that can slice through concrete without so much as a snag, and yet this cat backflips over everything you throw at it.

Also, I love reloading animations in first-person shooters, I can't explain it, but if the reloading animation looks smooth or a little complex, I find it satisfying.
If you haven't already, I would highly recommend you play Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

You won't be disappointed with those reload animations. Trust me.

I liked that too, but I wouldn't call it "silly", it's more like a minor detail that is appreciated. I don't mean that to sound argumentative, it's just when I think "silly" I tend to think of something that's a little childish like in Army of Two where you can bro-fist or air guitar with the co-op partner.

EDIT: Although this looks like a case where the title and the OP seem to be a little different from one another. *grumbles*
...I LOVED Bro-fisting with my friend in that game!!!...that sounded way worse than I meant it to...

Anyway, yeah, I thought it was more of the "What little details make you gush far more than it should" kind of thing when I read the OP rather than small things that were insignificant. It sounds weird but I actually use those animation examples as selling points when I'm trying to convince someone to buy the game :)

I was thinking of trying Far Cry 3 at some point, so I'll certainly keep that in mind, thanks!
