After playing some fallout 3 today, I was at Point Look out when I came across a bench with a skeleton slumped on it, a pistol beside it, some empty whiskey bottles and a pram. The view from the bench was over looking the sea and I just had to stop for a moment and go-"Crap that is depressing"

Im sure fallout players will have a good few to share but Escapists what have been your most depressing moments in a game?

All I can say is, the ending of Fallout 3. I've never been more disappointed in my life.

At the end of Fire Emblem.

I found out that most of my characters died or had less than great lives after the game...

Oh and also from Fire EMblem.

Once you find out Nergal's backstory....its depressing....

Near the end of MGS4 where Snake has to crawl through more or less a giant microwave and save the universe (not literally). It has some depressing music playing while you see various scenes from else where in the game including a little girl cooking eggs. Parts of Snake start popping, and he starts slowing down like he's going to die.

That part's quite emotional/depressing.

GTA IV
The ending in which Roman is killed. I know he was annoying, but when I first woke up in the safehouse and realised that he was actually dead was quite depressing. It was probably because of the free cab rides, but still.

Ugh, I just finished it today in a fit of boredom although I have racked up hundreds (yes, with an s) of game hours with a few different characters. It even got the ending wrong in the epilogue
saying that I was not as selfless as my father, although I was the one to enter the code and I did not taint the water.

Thank god I save with nothing but the ending...parade to go, so I can go back and explore the wastes. I was only level 15 and yet I think this is my favorite character yet.

ETA: The Crossing was pretty depressing too. It was a little sad to see the survivors not all that upset about their fallen one.

The other ending is much better. For me, at least.

My first playthrough of Mass effect 2

I lost Thane in the first specialist choice of the collector base. that pissed me off then, but was more depressing later when his is the single coffin on the Normandy's lower deck. Much better if you save everyone.

Also Gears 2

when Dom has to shoot his wife

The part in gears of war 2 when dom offs his wife and then BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHA oh geeze... and I thought I could say that with a straight face.

I dunno if I ever really get depressed at video games. I think its simply because I dont try to relate to characters enough to give a crap. Again, Gears of war. Killing your own wife... well in real life I couldnt imagine doing it and retaining sanity for a few years (at least). But I just find the characters unimaginative and unpalatable. I suppose I kinda hated seeing my Dog get capped by lucien in Fable 2 but that was mainly because I wasnt going to get any more free stuff by using that dog to treasure hunt.

Although at one point in Fallout three, in a particularly good bit of voice acting, the keller family transcripts (part three I think) is the voice of a girl witnessing the bombs fall in sheer terror. It did unnerve me a bit to think of myself in that situation, but again thats me putting myself into a scenario and not a fictional character
