As the name states, this 12th of October, the next book that continues the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy series will be availiable to purchase.
The thing is that it's being written by Eoin Colfer (The author of the Artemis Fowl books), and I don't know wether to be excited or not. I never really read Eoin's books so I can't judge. So is there anyone who know's more about the situation and guide me into the right direction?

Didn't everyone die at the end of the last one...? Sounds a lot like the Dune stuff, I might like it, but I doubt most people will.

I thought Salmon of Doubt counted as the 6th. I guess it's not actually a proper novel though. I'm a pretty tolerant reader (in that I like all the Dune novels that I've read (haven't read Paul of Dune or Winds of Dune yet)) so I'm sure I'd like this book.

Seeing as how all the main characters die and the Earth is finally and permanently destroyed in all possible universes in the last one I don't see how they could continue the series.

I still prefer the original radio series. I tried reading the books but they just weren't as good, and of course they cut the Hagumemnonns.

The reason he killed off all the characters and wiped out Earth was because they pressed him to release another book. Can't these jackenapes take a goddamned hint?

Stupid. Arthur already fulfilled the prophecy by dying in Stavro Mueller BETA. Besides, nobody can write like Douglas Adams.

Not needed, Douglas Adams finished it for a reason, it is long enough to be satisfying and short enough to make you want more. Besides Eoin Colfer may be imaginative but Douglas Adams is still way way better and funnier.

If they're going to continue a series, I think they should have someone finish "The Salmon of Doubt" (not the collection, the Dirk Gently book). Of course, either way I'm going to claim sacrelige.

I'd heard he wrote Mostly Harmless while depressed, and planned to undo/rework what happened at the end before his death. If this is based even remotely on what he had in mind, it might be good, though not as good as the others of course.

You can't call it a trilogy if there are more than three installments, so it's really a pentology or quintology or whatever you call it. Anyway, I've read and loved the series, so this is kid of a shock to me. I think I'll adopt a 'wait and see' mentality to this. If worse comes to worse, we can always regard it a non-canonical and pretend it never happened.

you should know that that is an on-going joke that Douglas Adams used.

That's part of the joke. I learned to just roll with it.

I'll see if I can borrow the sixth one from a library or something rather than buying it outright. I want it to be funny, and I'm trying my hardest not to pre-judge, but it's proving difficult.

What's with people and "prophecies" and...stuff? It's not a prophecy, there's nothing metaphysical about Agrajag having been killed god knows how many times by Arthur Dent. Also, Agrajag didn't say that being killed at "Stavromula Beta" [Stavro mueller Beta] was the last time Arthur killed him, only that Arthur did kill him there.

As I already said in my own user group (shameless plug), I'm not entirely sure about this.
It won't be the same thing.

I remember Neil Gaiman writing about him being approached to writing a sixth book first, and he rejected it saying that no matter how good his book will be, it won't be a Douglas Addams book. He also took that chance to say that if he ever dies, he doesn't want other people to make sequels to his works.

I'll probably end up reading it anyway though.

If this was a more serious series, I would trust Colfer to do it. He's pretty good. Two things though, this is a very silly series of books and the fact that everyone and everything died at the end prevented it from going on.
Though with the Guide 2.0, it's hard to say how it doesn't work itself out to be God and why it might be completely possible to redo everything.
I'll probably read it, but I don't expect it to be anywhere as enjoyable as the first 5 books or the radio plays.
