Again? This was here yesterday.
And its still not worth a discussion.
But at least the game gets some publicity like this, people are working very hard on it to make it a success.(also doing their best to balance it right)

I think the main difference between a muscle-y Ryu and a boobatious skull girl is that being a muscular tank makes sense for a fighter, if his sole job is to punch people then being that muscular is beneficial to his job. Having massive boobs and a skimpy outfit doesn't make you a better fighter. So it's not a double standard.
Is that honestly the reason why the guys are ripped? Or is that just a convenient side-effect of looking Olympian? Because being a human meat-brick doesn't make you a better fighter any more than having big boobs. Skill makes you a better fighter more than anything.

And this game is obviously meant to be over the top and styled. I mean, one of the characters can detach her head to fight and another looks to be out of some Looney Tunes-esque cartoon.

Not to mention, Ryu isn't exactly fanservice. Least, not as done up in the games themselves.

I'm more worried about how the "Painwheel" character is 15 years old, dressing like that, and how the official site gives her measurements.

I'm more concerned about it being a shit fighter.

Look as unbalanced as hell.
How exactly? So far i'v seen nothing to suggest that any character has any sort of overwhelming advantage over the others. True, being able to pick one two or three characters for your team will probably not be that well balanced i think, but once people figure out which composition is the strongest there shouldn't be a problem, and the game will probably be patched to keep it balance for all the 3 team compositions anyway, its one of the things ,along with custom assists, that make the game really cool so I hope it wont be a useless feature.

I look at the controversy around Skullgirls, and just think about other all-female casts, like FFX-2 for JRPGs, and even things like Arcana Heart.
All female protagonist line-ups, yet with barely any of this "OH GOD THE SEXISM" controversy.
Sorry but you cant even mention AH3 on fighting game forums without being called a pedophile, its a shame really since its one of the best fighters out there right now, but no one plays it becasue their afraid of loli's.

@The rest of you

Girls with big bewbs and skimpy clothes and musclebound freaks in ripped shirts are the same thing. They are both about presenting an idealized look for the human body, male and female. Ryu is SF4 does not look like a figher, he looks like a body builder, the last person you want with you in a fight, those guys have no dexterity, Cammy does not look like a fighter, she loks like a stripper, tbh honest pole dancing requiers a lot of strength and dexterity so shes sure to be fit, id rather have a stripper with me in a fight than a body builder. In the end fighting game chracters are not about realistic representation of what real fighters look like in games like SF and Skullgirls, its about easily recocnised designs to avoid confusion while playing, to create iconic characters to asociate with the game IP and simply to just make the game look good.

You do raise a good point but from what I have seen of the Skullgirls trailers, the fight itself are unrealitic, example Ms. Fortune can take her head off and is still alive. I feel their clothing is somewhat justify as long it's suit them (although I would think maybe their boob may pop out) but yet again they're aren't real characters to beging with.

There are far worse female characters design out there and the girls from Skullgirls are not one of them.
I don't think unrealistic fight really makes sense in any sort of standard fighting game.

OT: It is not really sexism with all the characters yes some are idealised but what isn't nowadays? The only way to stop this is to talk with your wallet. Personally the problem I see with the game is that it seems like a bit of BlazBlue/Guilty Gear type generic fighter but more casual and with tits. It just seems from current gameplay to take that generic template and doesn't seem to have done much with it.

I also understand you can only do so much in what you are going for but it doesn't seem to be pushing anything other than boobs, sillyness and accessibility. I suppose we'll have to wait a bit more to see if it is any good.

My cousin (a female gamer, BTW) posted this link to her facebook wall yesterday that I think rings true pretty well for this argument. I was gonna put this in its own thread, because I think it's really interesting, but I think I'll gauge the reaction here first.

Yeah, that's what we're dealing with when confronting sexism in nerd culture guys.

We all know certain designs are aimed at men, well, teenagers. An im not that against it per se, until it is so obvious its pandering and trying to hard that it becomes a joke. An then you begin to question if they think this is all guys want from a game? Maybe its my age (34) and cgi T&A does little for now. But its kinda insulting when they design every character that way. Here i thought that since Tomb Raider was released we would be beyond this type of thing. Yes Lara was designed as a sex symbol but they didnt feel the need to have her were clothes that barely cover her body.

You know guys, discussions like these really weaken the word "sexism". It's almost always used if people don't like the design of female characters or if feel treated unfairly as an individual, but that's not what sexism is about.
Sexism is about equal right between men and women. There are still countries in the world where women are valued as lesser humans, and it's still a huge problem. THAT is sexism, not disliking a character design.

So women want "equality" yet they cry wolf at this but not a bunch of guys who are ripped beyond human capacity?

I'm not an apologist, I don't think that this is an "idealized" version of a woman (to whom? Guys? Would you ACTUALLY tap a girl with gorilla arms on her head?! No seriously, even the more "normal" ones, I don't see as sexxy), it's just a cartoony, artistic vision.

Perhaps it's not the most mature vision - and to be honest, I'm sick of nearly EVERY GODDAMM WOMAN in gaming being either overtly sexualized (huge boobs, can see her panties) or pathetic whiney brats.

Otherwise, it just looks like a bubbly, fun game to me.
=x...You should read the OP again. The only people who complained about Skullgirls being sexist were guys.

The short skirts, loads of panty shots and huge breasts are obviously displays of sexuality. Its blatent. Lets not even deny. These women are displaying they are sexy and showing off their sexuality and you know what?

THATS JUST FINE

When did it become wrong to appreciate the human form?

To have a strong kickass girl whos independant but appreciates her own sexuality to the point where shes proud to show it?

People will be offended by everything.

Would you care if it was men in spedos? Would you care if it was robots and pirates? Why are women in skirts any less of an appropriate character roster? Would you deny the artist his tools? Would you censur who can and cant be in a game?

The best thing is.

The sex. Is not. The sell.

Thats the main thing. The sell is these awesome interesting characters are in a fun looking fighter with a unique feel. And happen to be dressed sexily. Everyones free to dress as they want right? Let her have those costumes. So many topless dudes in twilight. People KNEW it was obvious sex appeal. And no one cared. And they shouldnt. Because this "taboo" subject is rediculous, when did sexuality get all scary and dangerous? Let the artist play with anything and everything and see what happens.

Yup.

It's likely safe to say that the only people getting their nuts in a knot over this are the self-righteous "white knights."

God forbid a number of fictional women don't look horrifying.

I always hate posts like that when they never try to provide an example of what is good of which there are more than a few examples. It is quite easy to poke holes and point out a problem but many posts like that that do bring this up rarely offer any sort of real solution and good characters.

There needs to be more than the general stop being deluded about the situation and be a better person response in these posts.

There is a fine line between not looking horrifying and being oversexualized. I feel Skullgirls leans more to the 'overly sexual' side, but to call it sexist? That's a bit of a stretch. (Not directed at you, guy I quoted)

Personally, my favorite character is Parasoul. 'Twenty-Three, take the shot!' is probably the best Super in any fighting game ever.

My initial reaction: Yeah, kinda sexist, but nothing new. Maybe I should look into it a bit to see if there is something majorly sexist that isn't being shown here.

After checking it out and watching videos and stuff: Hey, this is awesome! I really like the diversity of the characters and the fun atmosphere of what I've seen so far. Just looking at the pictures, it seems like the main focus is the ladies' "assets," but they really have a lot of personality and individuality. Man, I'm actually getting kind of excited about this game. Thanks for letting me know about it!
You are welcome. I am excited about it too!
