Some people are just never satisfied.

This,

I've seen so much whinge-ing about what people don't like in Skyrim that it's bloody irritating - the OP will have had access to plenty of screenshots and videos of the Elves before he bought the game, so who's bloody fault is it if he still goes out and buys it?

Yeah, the game has flaws, and bugs, those need highlighting so they can be fixed, but there's an awful lot of "I don't like how they did X, so therefore I hate the game" going around...

Meh, I enjoy Skyrim, I'm going to continue to do so.
Oh, don't get me wrong. Skyrim is great. But that doesn't mean that there isn't a wealth of stuff in the game that I can rip on.

They look like the elves of the Elder Scrolls universe.

Here's a different elf.

Have another.

One more.

Notice how not-elvish they look, according to you.
*Puts on her hat of University of Mythological Research*
The first one is not elf, it's a Satyr. Second one is a Nymph most likely of Dryad variety and third ones would be some kind of minor Fae or even Gnomes. Neither of them are elves however!*nod*

But yes. TES has it's own aesthetics of elven races, which are quite odd with their upwards stretched faces, tilted, bug-like eyes and signs of ageing apparent. Nothing modders can't fix, and there are already textures available for fixing the eyes and skins, will take a bit longer for the meshes because they are higher poly count than Oblivion and i'm not sure if the rigging skeletons are easily extractable without Creation Kit.

What? Yes it does. This is America goddammit. If it hasn't been run through Photoshop 15+ times with 6 filters, then I don't want it. I mean, we can freaking cut peoples faces open and stuff plastic in there to make them look however we want, there is ZERO excuse for something to look less than fabulous.

is not a dark elf.
Except Elder Scrolls is as far from D&D-based as something can get and still be a fantasy RPG with Elves, humans, Orcs (who are Elves), and rumours of Dwarves (who were actually human-sized Elves). They aren't supposed to look like Elves in other series, because they aren't those elves. They're Tamriel Elves.

I can't figure out what's worse. That someone designed them in the first place thinking that they would be aesthetically pleasing, or that someone didn't tell the person who created them that they're an absolute failure and put them in the final release.
Bold for point. You assuming something already. Perhaps you should rethink that.
Rethink what? That perhaps a designer hated the people playing their games and instead purposely made them look like their faces were put in a vice grip with giant anime eyes? I suppose that's a possibility too.
Yes... Bethesda hate you.

They sat around one night and discussed how they may best ruin your life and decided that it would be with the appearance of the elves in Skyrim.

I was there, it happened....

It was a tough choice between messing with the elves and infecting you with sithilis.

If this is that big a deal... You really need to re-assess what's important to you.

Personally I think they look really cool. They are different from the human races and you can actually see that they are elves. Not just a pointy eared human with different coloured skin.

Your opinion = not fact.

I agree with the OP, the Elves look absolutely hideous and I am not a player who always picks the prettiest race. I went with a female Argonian because out of all the options (in my opinion) it looked the least horrible.

I love how the OP is just met with so much hostility here, because he actually finds one fault with Skyrim. Thought that the Escapist community had more respect than that.
It's that the fault doesn't actually exist. What'd be the point in distinguishing between races if they were all identical save for a few features? Nords are heavier set than Bretons and Imperials, but they still have the same basic build. They're clearly human. The elves were at no point assumed to be humanlike.
In fact, I keep hearing about how fantastical the world of Morrowind was, but when the inhabitants of the world are changed to be inhuman, there are complaints.
Yes. The elves look frightening. The Altmer are actually horrifying. But that's okay, I've always hated high elves. At least in this game it's justified - I couldn't explain it in Oblivion, I just wanted to slaughter them.

I KNEW IT! Those bastards. Next you're going to tell me that my horse can climb a damn near 90 degree incline as a reference to the wall street crisis and the Illuminati.

What is Sithilis? Is that like a Dark Brotherhood STD?

I really hate it when elves are made out to be a race of Mary Sues, I love how elves are ugly and generally bastards in this game.

As far as I'm concerned, if it looks like a drow, has a backstory similar to a drow, and is a complete prick, like a drow, then it's a drow.

And we all know what we do with Drow in these parts.

i prefer the term 'reimagined'. bethesda can make races look however the hell they want, just cause they aren't "humans but with pointy ears" doesn't make them not elves. elf isnt even a real thing, if theyre ugly then thats part of TES elvish culture or whatever

As it seems, some people always want to play in the same generic fantasy world with bearded dwarves and sexy elves.

Hell, this genre is called fantasy. The developers can imagine their races in the game how they want. If you don't like it, there are maaaaaany (in my opinion too many) fantasy videogames out there with mainstream elves, dwarves and so on. Go play them or wait until the modding community releases their sexy elves mods. ;)

You have a point with the horses but that's completely off topic!

Sithilis... Hard to explain...

Imagine Naga Sadow and Sithis got together at your local bad guys STD clinic..... Yeah turns out that third i should have been a u.

Well this is really a "I Rant about Silly things in Skyrim" thread, it's just that I felt like making the elves the focus of my burning rage.

Yep, that sounds pretty awful. Now, Syphilis, that wouldn't be so bad, all I'd really need for that is some Penicillin.

Well, we're all human. However much we try to be objective, we will always get emotions into play when discussing the pros and cons of our favorite series.

Another example of this is how people complain about brown and grey shooters, and then go ahead and tell everyone that Skyrim and Fallout 3 look good.
I see where you are coming from, but if you enjoy a game, why get bothered by other people's negative opinion. You are enjoying it, you are playing it, there is no point in raging and trying to convince someone else that your experience with a particular game is better than whoever you are arguing with.
