So for the past week or so I've been having difficulty falling asleep. Generally I get in bed at 12 but don't fall asleep until 2 or 3. Any idea on how i could fall asleep quicker?

you could get more excersize and make your body tired by the end of the day.

I'm usually the same way, make sure you aren't playing video games right before laying down, I've noticed they keep my brain stimulated a while after I've already laid down.

obviously you shouldn't be drinking coffee/soda before bed.

try to isolate what the problem is (what has changed in your routine for the past week or so?) it could be another issue altogether.

As aba1 up there said, make sure you are getting at least a bit of exercise in the day so your body has a chance to actually get tired. Also, avoid doing things around bedtime that make your mind active, like video games or even TV (at least the fast-paced shows). Reading is the best thing to do before bed.

Exercise lots, eat well, try to avoid stress. Also avoid stimulants (coffee, sugary drinks, hot chocolate) and any drugs in general (alcohol, etc). Don't eat for an hour or two before bed, and try and acclimatise yourself to it. Obviously getting up early is going to help too.

How many hours of sleep do you typically get a day?

i have exercised less and i just moved houses. the only thing i can think of that's stressing me out is going to college next week but i don't think that would do it. guess i should stop playing Dead Space right before bed

Eh, just take over-the-counter sleeping aids for one or two nights then you should be able to get into a better sleeping patten...Presuming you are healthy enough to have them.

How early do you wake up? Could be that you're waking up too late and as such don't spend enough energy to be tired by the end of the day.

Usually a book, or the local news (read: not stuff like FOX, otherwise you might get so enraged you don't sleep ever) helps me.

If it's a weekend and I can't get to sleep, I'll just say f' it and try again later, but if I have stuff to do the next day (work, school etc) then I'll attempt to just clear my mind of all thoughts and try to drift away.

Whatever you do, DO NOT. I repeat. DO NOT. play a game like Team Fortress 2. Because you just might have awesome headshot havoc or minigun mayhem, or even rocket rocking session which will take several hours before you calm down enough to sleep.

and you have school the next day.

Is your problem just falling asleep? Or staying asleep?
If the former is your issue, and none of the above helps, one thing my doctor said that I could do was take a Benadryl before going to sleep. Side effect free since it's the drowsy side effect that you want. Obviously it will help any allergy effects that you may be suffering from as well.

However, I would only use this as a last resort if anything else mentioned above does nothing to help you. And, only take ONE pill, 25 mg. And, make sure you give yourself time for 7-8 hours of sleep, or you'll find it incredibly difficult to get up. I did this for a few days and it helped get my sleep cycle back to what it was. Again, last resort only.

Cut out Caffeine past lunch. If possible keep your bedroom only for sleep and sex, don't watch movies, do work, read etc in there. Do that somewhere else then move when your actually tired. That can be difficult though depending on your living arrangments.

This certainly can help.

Has anything changed in your life over the past week? I'm about to move house, and I just started a new relationship, so I have a lot bugging me, but inability to fall asleep can be inspired by any change, really.

Replace this with either Starcraft 2 multiplayer (super stressful), or borderlands (ANARCHYYYYYYY!!!!), and you have my life a few months ago. And my friend I was playing with refused to believe that I had trouble going to sleep after playing with him. >_<

Yeah, but if that doesn't work, you have to worry about a damp spot... >_>

I had insomnia last night, and I tried that and well...I had to spend the next 6 hours getting comfortable trying not to roll onto the damp spot...

......XD in hindsight, it's kinda funny.

Develop a routine before going to bed, whether it be reading for a few mins then taking a shower or cleaning around the house. This will tell your mind that its time to wind down and go to sleep.

This has helped me alot since I work the night shift.

Exercise, eating better, try to rub one out, or if none of these work....go see a doctor about it. You could suffer from insomnia or you could be suffering from stress. If you have a lot of stress in your life, it will effect how you sleep, appetite, etc.

My therapist taught me this trick of getting to sleep, it sounds stupid but it works. Just lay in bed with your eyes closed and start counting really slowly. I usually end up asleep before I reach 100.
