Sleeve handguns, do they genuinely work?

What i'm talking about here is those funky little pistols you see in various movies (Alien Resurrection, the guy with dreadlocks is packing a pair, and in the latest Sherlocke Holmes, that guy... can't remember his name, has one) which are strapped to the users forearm(s), and with a simple wrist or arm movement a pistol slides out of the sleeve and into the users hand, then with another movement they retreat. Now i'm curious if such a device even exists outside of fiction, how it works, whether they've been used at any point in history, and if there's a web link i can use to find out more about these awesome contraptions.

You mean like this:

A Google search for 'sleeve mounted pistol' had that as number one.

I reckon it could work like in the movie (by the way the man is Prefessor Moriarty) but would have to be activated by a sitch or button, although there is some new technology being used in prosthetic limbs that senses nerve activity, so technically it could work but would be very expensive

hope this helps :)

And a Google image search for the same words brings up this under one of the results:

There is a sleeve mounted pistol (Although a single shot rather than a 'spring loaded pistol'. There are some other interesting bits down there too.

Moriarty! thanks so much, that was gonna bug me for days... and i have to much pride to Google search it... :(
But this nerve sensory tech is news to me, thought that was still in the kinda concept stages... intriguing.

fix'd

also, i had an idea for a pistol on an arm with a spring, so you pulled your sleave back a bit and the pistol swings into your hand. if it's not spring loaded it'd only work when you're rms is pointing down though.

They exist but are utterly impratical.

Sleeves would get in the way & the practicalities of carrying around skin crushing & tearing clamps and bands & leather straps when you could be carrying equally comfortable & safer wrist mounted holsters.

One has to remember guns arent toys. Safety isnt as safe as unfireable & an open triggers a trip to the hospital.
The idea of the device in question was to be discrete, and subtle. Having to reach toward your other arm to draw a pistol which is possibly of a regular size and therefore more visible and detectable defeats the purpose. and plus the wonder of having a gun which slides into your hand and can be slid back into your sleeve without drawing attention means that you don't even have to alert people surrounding you that you have a weapon if it turns out it wasn't even needed. Practicality isn't an issue at all, necessity is.
Stealth, some die by it, but the smart kill by it.

If such a thing exists then it would probably work on the same principle as a hidden blade would. Some sort of spring loaded mechanism to eject and retract the thing with the flick of a wrist. Might be a bit useless though. Depending on how small it would have to be you might only get one round into it at a time.

I like the guns in Inglorious Basterds. I don't know if it would work, but the theory of it seems sound enough. A gun mounted on the top of your wrist goes off when you punch someone with it. Think of it as an upgraded version of Fallout 3's Power Fist.
