Anyway, I found out about the slender man thing a couple of weeks ago via knowyourmeme.com, started watching the videos on youtube in the dark. My god they are terrifyingly good.
Um... a foggy forest? I don't get what's so special about it.

OT - I'll have to check this out when I get home. I can't visit the linked sites since I'm currently at work. Damnation! Although, by then it will be daytime, bwahaha!

So I get this link to a video on youtube to a series called "Marble Hornets" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmhfn3mgWUI&feature=channel]

It's cool, very scary. You might notice that all the "Marble Hornets" videos have comments disabled; but on a related video I found people commenting about "The Slender Man."

So I googled and very quickly found it was a meme; that started on a 'show your photoshop ghost pictures' thread on the Something Awful forums. [http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3150591&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3]

Myth solved. Or maybe not.

To save you the forum lurking; I'll go over it briefly. A guy called 'Victor Surge' posts two photos of a tall figure, in a black suit. He notes;
"its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us"

In a later post he describes how he came up with the idea on the spot, and the thread runs with the myth adding all sorts of mythos to it.

Curiously before the thread was derailed into a "Slender man" thread one poster (Beerdeer) noted how he had heard of the myth before; before Victor explained the creation of the character. He then later edited the post to state that he was lying and simply wanted to see more of those pictures.

However, the myth of a tall or slender man has been with society for a while. It was present in the movie "Phantasm" (Where the OP states he got inspiration.)The Mothman Prophecies was in the same theme; as well as much of HP Lovecraft. As well as in alot of other fiction.

The constant trend in all mythos is that the more research put into the search for the entity; the more that it comes in contact with the researcher. This leads to two outcomes. Substantial works never published on the mythos, other than fiction. And retractions of sighting/knowledge etc. Such as in the SA forums, and elsewhere.

I even have a real link to an Academic Journal that leads me to the conclusion that there is truth behind this; it's a law journal mainly about murder cases which turn into insanity pleas. It talks about brutal murders in which the defendants claim that something not human performed the act of murder. The case study used is almost identical to some of the stuff I've seen online. Give me a moment to find it on JSTOR and I'll post a link; I can't remember the journal title.

So I know people are instantly going to jump on this and claim that it is all untrue, etc etc etc. But this isn't a true or not thread. I'm making an appeal for info on this unfindable entity; simply as a starting point.

So what can you find to help validate this myth?

EDIT: Loop Striken; I know you're going to post.
Here's a vid i found on it,it might help

i will not sleep tonight
heh,same here
And the only way I'll sleep tonight is if I play Celtic Music. And sleep with a knife under my pillow
By celtic do you mean the people or the football club?
Celtic Music. You know, stuff like Celtic Woman, or Solas. The CD I use is called Celtic Circles, from Tapestries Records. I really like the harps, whistles and flutes. They're very calming
Yeah it is,rarely listen to it though

t you've got the basics: he's a tall, supernatural being who finds, haunts, and kills people. He's the thing you roll your eyes at during the day but can't get out of your head at night, because you feel like he's watching you. He'll also look into your bedroom window at night. Even if you're on the second floor.
GOD DAMMIT. And I thought waiting to watch the video tomorrow would let me sleep tonight...some people are going to be very mad at you, sir. Including me.

Anyhow, I'm sufficiently terrified. It's an interesting theory, and I can't really say whether it's fake or not at this point. Like I said, I'm waiting til tomorrow on the video. When I really get into something scary, I get pretty freaked out.

Besides, I read a black-and-white graphic novel adaptation of Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror today...with genuinely disturbing monstrosities throughout. I've just about had my fill of nightmare fuel for one day. Tomorrow, though...TO THE GOOGLE SEARCH BAR! I shall unwrap the mystery behind this enigmatic terror!

Yes, so am I. That doesn't stop me from being disturbed by the thought of an unnaturally tall, unnaturally skinny man with indiscernible facial features appearing out of nowhere just before deaths occur...

FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUCCK. I hate you too, Ultrajoe. It's sad but true.
Well, I guess I have nothing better to do than refresh this page every few minutes with a shiver and wish like all hell I had curtains on my window...no sleep for me! o_O

EDIT: Couldn't resist posting this. Obviously fake, but a slightly clever reference.

I'd recommend not looking out your window anymore, you do realize that when you make eye contact with the slender man, he soul-gazes you.

Don't even bother with curtains, he can smell you. And oh you smell divine...

 I think it would be best at this point to accept your fate...

Oh, I will say this. That first video that was posted on this forum... thats scary. The ones from that Marbel Hornet chap actually make this completely un-scary.

I just watched all 23 videos and... well, meh.

This all really reminds of a alien sighting story I read about, except that the alien had a certain colour of eyes and projected a sense of calm to all who saw him. There have been a lot of sightings/experiences of him throughout modern history.

Anyone know what I'm refering to, I can't seem to find it again.

That episode of The Simpsons? Where its not an alien but Mr. Burns instead?

Ah, you had to say you were being sarcastic... I dont think people needed me to mention I was joking.

Either that or they would assume I was slamming my head against the keyboard and posted whatever made it into the comment.

okay now first thing i notice is how this slender man looks like he was stamped on the picture. Notice how the other kids blend in with the background. He seems like a stick its just too obvious to me that its a fake pic. Maybe they didnt have photoshop back then but they still could do some tricks to manipulate pictures. N how come his black dress is blacker than everything else? its just plain obvious.
actually its my first time hearing about this myth.
N why are these kids looking so freaky when the photographer took that shot?

Hahaha damn I couldn't sleep until daybreak yesterday because of this damn thing. I doesn't matter if it's fake, it's just how dedicated people are of perpetuating the myth and how damn well done it is that gets on my nerves. Thank goodness there was a whole slew of comedy movies on TV for me to watch lest I go insane from paranoia.

This whole "slender man" myth could make a pretty good horrer movie i reakon. It will make a change to the usual creepy black haired girls.
