Holy REEEEEE fest, relax.

I read everything perfectly clear, and yes, I still firmly disagree with this notion that having a decent chunk of the roster locked is supposed to be an issue. Let me ask you this... If the roster didn't start off at Smash 64 levels, where exactly would you be happy for the roster to have started out as right from the beginning? Would all unlocks up to Melee be good enough? Everything from 64 to Smash 4, with only new people to Ultimate left to get? I believe you touched on it before, but I wanna know how many is enough to start with in your eyes. 8 isn't enough, so what is the minimum? Does it have to be 80% of the whole thing to be satisfactory?

"oh no wait I gotta grind for about 20 hours before we can play hold on friend."
I touched up on this in my post. I've had several people still have fun with what was started with, what we unlocked during our play time, and then with some more characters I unlocked by playing the game on my own in between friend visits. I don't understand the idea of "Few characters at the start= no fun allowed" to some

I dunno, because people then can't go "No Items, Final Destination, Fox Only" right off the bat?

they can actually. Fox is one of the original 8.

Well yeah, but it still stands that a lot of this seems to come from people not wanting to get out of a rigid mindset and loosen up, maybe do something different instead of being focused on that "pro gaming" mindset.

BIG TIME EDIT: A lot of this was originally meant for PapaGreg096, but your comment above fits in pretty well still. It's is asinine to complain that the whole game isn't unlocked for you right out of the gate. That defeats a ton of the purpose of any game. If that's what someone wants, good for them. But to call that a failing on the game's part is simply backwards

Apparently you didn't read everything clear because DirtyHipsters and I said numerous of times that we don't mind the idea of things being unlocked but 80 percent of the content being locked is dumb. So because you made the above comment and tell us it is asinine to complain about not having game not unlocked for us right away, I had to capitalize my previous statement in order to make sure you fully understand what was repeated numerous times in this thread.

Make it like most fighting games and have at least 50 percent of the roster unlocked, Jesus Christ did Smash give everyone Alzheimers or something.

Just because people disagree with you does not give you the right to insult everyone and claim they have a serious illness like Alzheimers thanks.

That would be fine if you people decided to disagree with me but you and Elvis decided to become disingenuous and choose to strawman what the opposing side says. And you are one of the last people on this entire site to be telling anyone not to insult other people.

And I'VE stated numerous times that I think it's a rather ridiculous thing to complain about and that I disagree on the idea that most character should be unlocked right off the bar. But that's just personal opinion, just like how you have your own on this matter.

Make it like most fighting games and have at least 50 percent of the roster unlocked.
See, this is a much more reasonable expectation. This is why I look at what you and Dirty Hipsters stated and just shake my head. 80%+ or all of the entire roster being expected to be opened up right at the beginning just so you and him/her can have your version of fun is a lofty expectation to have of a game. That's all I've been trying to say.

Jesus Christ did Smash give everyone Alzheimers or something.
Now you're just getting overly dramatic.

You say that, but let me break this down for you...

I understand that sometimes you have to work for your food and if you want to get a character you like you have to do a few requirements but my god whoever thought that the starting roster should contain 8 people should be shot.
A fair enough complaint, maybe there isn't enough at the beginning. But then it's followed up with this:

PapaGreg096 said:

Alongside Dirty Hipsters stating these:

Dirty Hipsters said:
I wouldn't feel accomplished from unlocking characters, I would feel like my time is being wasted, because it is.
Dirty Hipsters said:
I would much rather just have all the characters unlocked from the beginning and be able to play with friends. Even then, I would actually be ok with all of the new characters being locked and having to do a little work to unlock them.
Then I think you can forgive me for getting the impression neither of you liked the idea of unlocking things in this game. You can call it a "strawman" all you want, but considering these were both stated from you and Dirty Hipsters, I think that impression is pretty fair. Especially when it was also followed up with this:

Dirty Hipsters said:
The game is work for 20 hours until you actually have the characters and then you get to do the fun thing that the game is built for, which is playing with friends. Literally the thing that the game is built around is locked until you've wasted enough time.
I can tell you right now what someone defines as fun is purely subjective and of personal opinion. From my personal experience, playing Smash and unlocking things is fun and I've had fun with others doing it, but Dirty Hipsters calls it work. YOU may not PapaGreg096, but he does.

I can concede the idea that maybe 8 is too little. That's fine. I can agree with your idea that 50% is probably a good number to start with. But when I'm getting comments from both sides saying that playing for more is an issue (More on Dirty Hipster's side than yours, making that very clear right now), how else am I supposed to look at it other than "I wish I didn't have to work hard to play a game and unlock things", the point everyone else has been trying to make? I have been reading both of your comments (Like you think I'm not doing), and while both of you have followed up saying you don't mind unlocking things, in the same breath you've both stated at least something to indicate it's an issue and a source of frustration.

So forgive me if I got my lines crossed here and was under the impression it was an issue to you both.

Personally I hate the new system they have for setting rules. Sure it's convenient to have presets, but when I play with my friends we change the rules constantly, from bumping up or lowering the stock count to changing up the items that spawn. It was much quicker to just pop into these things from the character select screen than having to go back past stage selection and editing and saving a rules preset.

Man, it's like some people haven't played games from back when you unlocked things by playing the game rather than pay for it with microtransactions.
I didn't mind the grind personally, the only issue with this mentality is that back then it was also fun to unlock things because they were mysteries. I didn't know any what any of the characters would be in Melee other than the ones that were already in the first game so it was exciting to get Marth, Roy and Mr. Game & Watch. I know they like to use the new characters to hype up the game, but it really takes away from half the joy of unlocking stuff when I KNOW what every single character in the game is going to be.

I don't have Smash Ultimate. Not my bag. So I have no stake in this, but I'm curious about something.

Is there some kind of DLC or such you can buy to unlock all characters in one go?

If yes, I think that's probably why most of the roster is locked.

Edit: Fixed to quote the right people this time. That's what I get for late night posting without double checking everything is put together right. My bad on mis-quoting you

It kind of feels like Sakurai was like, I made this amazing game but the same way I suffered to make this game you will have to suffer to unlock the characters. Also was this to spite the competitive community because they asked for a tournament edition with all of characters unlocked.

It happens, quote system isn't great. I appreciate that you weren't actually trying to argue in bad faith unlike Yoshi who loves taking quotes out of context and using strawman arguments.

Agreed on that front. I'll readily admit when I muck a post up or end up in the wrong, and I do my best to ensure I'm not using a strawman argument to prove my point. Otherwise there's no real point to be made

That's rich coming from someone like you.

Acting like i misquote you all the time.

I rarely even post here these days. And if i do it's generally in a Nintendo game related thread giving my opinion on that game because the majority of topics here i just have no interest in.

oh wait but talking about games i like on Nintendo systems just makes me a filthy fanboy doesn't it?

No matter what i say on this website i can't win with people like you because of your prejudice towards me.

I don't think it's about liking nintendo games. It's more a matter of how firmly and unrelenting your defense tends to be, which is probably why...

No matter what i say on this website i can't win with people like you because of your prejudice towards me.
... this prejudice exists in the first place. Don't blame him for it
