As my mother put it "If the worst your child does is smoke then you've done a good job."

I can see where you're coming from. Basically it would be, "If you smoke and I catch you I'll have a new pack of cigarettes.", kind of ordeal or something close to that.
no it will be the same concept my dad used on me...oh so you stole them? or you bought them? well watch me burn them in the fire place.
When it came to cigarettes or any sort of alcahol if I managed to steal it my dad would make it so I couldn't enjoy it, and If I bought em he'd do the same.

I'm an ex-smoker, so I understand why people smoke, but I'd still be disappointed if my kids smoked. It's a waste of money and since I've given up, it's amazing how much longer my money seems to last. If they were legally old enough to smoke, I wouldn't be able to stop them but I wouldn't be stupid enough to say 'Don't come home' or 'Pay your own uni fees' because that is ludicrous parenting and abandonment.

But if my kids were under 16, with no ability to legally obtain cigarettes, I'd be furious. How the hell is my getting those cigarettes? It just seems seedy and they would certainly be doing something wrong to get the cigarettes. It could easily affect their development growing up and as the government are putting new regulations on smoking all the time, I would be disappointed more than angry that they were taking up some an anti-social habit.

God, I do not miss standing outside night clubs in the wind and rain to get my nicotine hit.

Yep, I'd probably do something like this. Hell, as a parent you're supposed to keep your kids from doing stupid things until they're old and smart enough to know themselves not to do it. Considering the only benefit smoking has is giving the impression of releasing tension, which smoking builds up in the first place, it's one of the end all stupid things.

Wow, that is worse. Making it less enjoyable instead of just burning them just sucks cause its alot more annoying.

If I was your Dad then I would totally flip out. You're only doing yourself a disservice, you are essentially spending your hard-earned money on something that kills you.

I might say 'its your money and you can do with it what you please' but I probably wouldn't. I would confiscate them and throw them away and nag you constantly in an attempt to change your mind to not just cut back but quit completely.

All-in-all its a waste of money and once you get addicted it is just going to get harder to quit. The government is not going to drop the prices any time soon (in fact its only going to get more and more expensive) and as soon as you realise that over the past few years that you have spent thousands on cigarettes which could have been used for holidays or on luxuries then you might change your mind.

See, I dont even know you and I am going on and on about it...imagine if you were my kid then there would be hell to pay. I have never smoked in my life (my parents dont and thats how I was brought up...to hate smokers :p). I would actually be in favour of the government to up the prices...it would mean that I might find more girls out there who aren't smokers (smoking is a HUGE turn-off for me, I dont care if shes fucking Megan Fox, if she smokes I want nothing to do with her)

wow...I kind've ranted a bit here but at least you know what I'd be like if you were my kid.

Being a smoker, anything I say is going to sound hypocritical from the outset, but.. if this hypothetical child of mine took up the filthy habit, I'd make fun of them incessantly.

You know, bring it up in mixed company, talk incessantly of their lack of common sense and willpower, ask often and loudly whether he/she needs to pop outside to suck on the paper teat. Hide the tobacco and laugh at the ensuing panic as withdrawal kicks in and gradually supersedes any vestige of dignity. Be horrible about it in general.

I'm a great believer in ridicule as a cure for all sorts of moral degeneracy.

I have never tried a cigarette and i (hope) never will. It really doesn't seem appealing at all to me.

No its not my parents allowed me to smoke and I did for a while until I realised for myself that its not something I want to do and I've now quit for 5 weeks. What I mean is a lesson is more likely to be followed if you realise it yourself rather than having it forced upon you.

I think it's idiotic, but I probably wouldn't flip out if I saw my kid doing it. I would probably straight-up call them an idiot for doing it, but it's their choice.

i would get my kid to stop smoking at the moment of truth. Im a smoker myself so it's kind of ironic, though i know how it will develop in the future, and that's why i don't want the kid to go through the same things.

I don't know how I would react. Being a bit of a hypocrit here because I smoke. But I know how bad it is so if I had a son or daughter who would like to smoke, I would tell them the downsides of smoking (are there any positive ones? NO!.. gonna be a long story).
My parents were really cool about it. When I was 16, my mom said she'd rather have it that, if I smoke, I wouldn't be sneaky about it.
She thought that if I smoked already, I could also do it outside of the house and couldn't stop me anyway.

Smoking is bad but then again it's your body you're harming so big whoop. I prefer the "alternatives" wink-wink

My mom said that to me if she ever caught me smoking. She also said something about disohning me. But I understand, my older sisters father was abusive and he drank and smoke. Along with my father smoking and moving away I know why she hates it.

O.T. If he/she is 18 I don't care, they are now an adult so what they do with their lives is up to them. I just hope I have raised them well enough. If I catch them when they are younger a long talk followed with some serious parenting.

So long as they know the risks, pay for it themselves, and don't do it in my house, they can do what they want.

Father =/= Dictator.
But it's still your child and you'd like that him/her lives a healthy life.
So I wouldn't freak out and I wouldn't yell at them if I see them smoking, since it would definitely have the opposite effect. I'd rather have a chat with them while they grow up and teach them the consequences of smoking and just tell them "Son... just don't okay."
If they nonetheless would start smoking I'd help them quit as soon as possible.

Because I have two family members that smoke, my mom has problems because of it and can't quit and my sister who started a couple of years ago and smokes quite a lot. I'd like both of them to stop, but it's hard, and I wish I had the chance to stop them when they started.

But seriously, why would I let my children do whatever they want if I can help them. Children (especially teens) are stupid and I wish my parents forbade me to do many things I did in my life up until now. And I can be lucky they did forbid me to do certain things, and I feel and know I'm a better person with them having done so. It's a part of parenting and an important part, which more and more parents are forgetting/abandoning. You can't just let your child do whatever it wants. Sure, give them freedom, but teach them what's wrong and forbid them to do something that is not good to them. At least try and help them to stop.

My two cents.

It's their choice, if they are over the legal age requirement they can smoke as much as they want ( but if they do choose to smoke they are going to have to smoke my brand or a brand that i approve of, not having them smoking shit cigarettes). Plus i could not really tell them not to since i smoke.
