they do get a bad rep. i once play COD MW2 was walking around a building a looked out a window and saw someone. so i aimed and shot and got 2 kills with the shot. right after shooting them i took off, went behind a box and aimed at the window i was looking through, and what a surprise the 2 dudes where at the window.
This, sir, is how real sniping works. I am impressed that someone else out there has the knowledge of never shooting from the same place twice. Cheers

Snipers are a neccessary part of any game, we can't just have people running around in the open now can we.

Sniping is only bad when your being a lone wolf. Example, in Bad Company 2 if someone is sniping but they don't bother to help allies. That is what pisses me off personally. If your going to snipe then at least provide cover fire, or assist the ground troops.
I hate that, that why I never play recon on cetain maps while attacking (defendings a different story. What sucks even more, if you have a full squad and the three other members are playing recon. I know this is not always true, but it seems anyone playing recon is just boosting to level up the rank and the recon class.

I've never really had cause to hate snipers. I've got a lot of time played on CoD4 as a sniper. Usually I'll leave ground troops to team members and keep my enemy counterparts from having a clean shot. I love the challenge of out-shooting other snipers. I'll leave everyone else alone unless they get too close, then it's time to whip out the pistol or knife them. More often than not they'll have a P90 and martyrdom, too, which makes me die a little inside.

I dislike other Snipers in KillZone 2, its quite rare to get one that does what he's supposed to and defend target zones, instead they just shoot other snipers because chances are they are standing still to remain invisible.

In one game the opposing team had six snipers taking pot shots at the opposing teams sniper (me), the game was over very quickly because it allowed us to get all objectives since they weren't defending them.
wow that is such an epic failure it's not even funny. well, okay, maybe a little.

I know what you mean man, although I do love being a sniper in Killzone 2. They really got it right. Even the little things like holding your controller steady, since the designers integrated the sixaxis motion controls into the sniper scope, so you need a steady hand to get a good shot in.

I do prefer to be a bit more active when being a sniper. I'll usually defending the bridges/corridors/back alleys to our capture points and taking pot shots at enemies down the map. If you're gonna be a sniper, be a team player by defending your guys with some distant thunder, or else get lost as far as I'm concerned.

The problem people have with snipers is:

A. In team based games, they usually contribute very little, solely focused on killing the opposition rather than helping out.

B: Being killed by a sniper is infuriating, because you were killed in one shot from far away and thus were unable to react or prevent it.

C: Snipers appeal to the mindset of the 14 year olds who think that they have L33t sk1llz. Hence you get kids running about not being team players and screaming about how they owned you with a quickscope rather than capping a point.
Counterpoints:

A.) By killing the opposition, snipers ARE helping. Think for one second about how hard it can be sometimes to cap a point with a lot of enemies on that point. Snipers can alleviate pressure on objectives by eliminating the opposition before the enemy kills their teammates.

B.) It seems like that if you're being killed multiple times, then after two or three deaths, it's partially your fault. You know there's a sniper SOMEWHERE out there because he just smoked seven of your teammates, you didn't take cover, you're dead.

C.) I've played both with and against several snipers who were very calm about the role they played on their team. They were pretty respectful, didn't gloat. Generalizing snipers as fourteen year olds who scream like maniacs whenever they kill someone is not fair to the snipers out there who are calm and respectful.

Fair enough, you said 'usually', I always talk with my team mates and my most repeated question is "where do you need me?". Then I position myself where they need a hand and defend the flag, help them take down the guys near the enemy flag, etc. Camping =/= sniping, there's just as many guys sitting behind cardboard boxes with AK's waiting to empty their magazine in you.

Most good games make snipers so they take at least two shots to take down your whole health. Unless it's a headshot and in that case, either the sniper is not very far or you should go over to the guy with a smile and shake his hand for the amount of skill, try catching headshots with a sniper from miles away and see how 'easy' it really is.

However, yes, psychological part is a big part of the sniper's job (IRL as well), one of the more amusing ones when you hear the opposition raging over a game :). However, you should look up the number of machine guns vs the number of snipers in WW1... as that was the most psychologically f-d up war. And as far as gaming goes, I've seen people rage from others coming out of corners emptying out their 100-bullet machine gun into the surroundings and scoring 'lucky' shots, not much difference in how often in happens from my xp.

Awesome argument. Think I've heard it for just about anything, in any game, where people whine about any aspect of the game that annoys them or, more often, they're not good at. And gee, I sure as hell can't think of any time where I walked past a 9-12 year old kid with a machine gun, damn those are rare (want me to bring you an album full of 50 pics when I walk next to a 'gameroom' (big places with LAN connected PCs for MP games)?

Appears that we both don't like secretsantaone's arguments.

Eh, whatever. I get the kills, they can complain all they want, won't do a thing.
This. Theres one thing in the world that will never ever care how much you complain ***** or cry. Its the game. The game doesnt care, the game does not accept your arbitrary rules of fairness or noobness. The game registers kills. It registers who WINS and who LOSES. I get annoyed at certain tactics, but i never complain and moan endlessly, you find a way to beat them and make the game declare you the winner by conforming to the games rules not your own made up ones. If you come out the winner you win. No rules, no questions no exceptions.

Hacking and glitching is outside the game rules and as such is not allowed.

I only get pissed off on Snipers who act all lame.

If you take Halo Multiplayer for instance.

I take the sniper out for being in the lamest and most obvious spot ever... But than he returns to that same spot after he respawns, with a sniper rifle, and CONTINUES to go back to the same God-damn spot and actually gets kills in the process, no matter how many times I take him out.

It fails all God-damn logic! And it infuriates me!

It's a perfectly legitimate playstyle, but it gets bad when the maps are poorly designed. Examply: Team Fortress 2's 2fort has excellent sniper positions, but they're vulnerable enough that they can be easily taken down by a competent player.

I am a proud sniper *****.
really whats the poin? is jumping in front of somebody holding the firebutton down spraying bullets all over the place any different?
the only difference is that snipers have to aim and you can't see it coming...

I don't have a problem with sniping being both a good rusher and sniper myself. But I do find it annoying sometimes. Sniper rifles in most games are 1hit kills and it's this feature I find that ticks people off the most. The feeling of getting your testicles blasted off from two miles away isn't as harrowing if you survive. I believe that players may feel cheated out of a fair game if every time they step out they die in one hit without a chance to react.

Then again, nothing like a smoke grenade and silenced smg.

I don't even think camping's that bad an idea. If it's safe enough to stay there yet a fantastic spot to defend/get kills, stay there, it'd be stupid not to.

Gold Rush, first part, after the first point is taken, staying on top of the spawn and covering the tunnel where the rail is one of those sweet-spots where you're useful wit minimal effort.

I always just take a sidepath and then melee kill the snipers.Of course that doest prevent them from hitting me from the other side of the map through a building.I always get really unlucky with snipers.

I only get pissed off at snipers when theres too many of them and none will switch there class to help take the objective.
(It's not that big of a problem because it doesn't happen that often. Well in BF:Bad Company 2 anyway.)

I'm sure we've all played a game where we've sniped. I've heard people talk bad at me when I say I'm a "sniper". Some hear sniper and immediately think all kinds of bad thoughts (Camping, for example). So, I'm asking you. Snipers: Are they really as bad as some think? Or do they just get a bad rap?

Personally, I think that they get a bad rap. A few snipers deserve being called out for doing some of what they're accused of doing, but not all of them.

There's my thought, what's yours?
Snipers in real life get a bad rap. So no difference in a game. They are by their nature "campers" (with the exception of those that can run and gun with them, those are "l337") Do they deserve it? yes. Do i hate them for being good at it? No. Will i get frustrated when the same sniper kills me over and over again? Absolutely.

The weapon is in the game, and if you're good with it, good for you. Just don't expect me to take u alive and not teabag u if I find you. (Also true in Real Life, sadly, the killing part ofc)
