My friend is a godly sniper, he actually has always been very good at it, but now he is more than amazing. He attributes this to Battlefield 2. I've been playing a lot of games like that nowadays, and Battlefield 2, and I am slowly getting better. (Slightly above average sniper at best). What about you guys? What have you played to make your sniping better?

I wouldn't say that I'm great at sniping, but I think if you spend enough time with any FPS, you'll eventually become good at sniping. Practice makes perfect.

Sniping in most FPSs isn't all that hard. The thing is everyone is the same height, and most maps will have a choke points that people have to get threw. once you know that people will run past a point every few seconds you just have to set the scope to be at head level.

Sniping is a bit more difficult in TF2. It ensures that only people who have been practicing in other games can do significantly well.
I think some games make sniping a little too easy, and it ends up being the class everyone wants. It's always seemed useless to me in BF2. 1, because of the lag, and 2, because everyone's in a vehicle anyway.

I'm more of an infantryman, I learned this after getting the shit sniped out of me while sniping on MGO. It seems you never get sniped unless you're sniping.

In order.

1: Practice acurate mouse movement whenever you can, even while you're browsing the net. Move from letter to letter in a sentence, click on a particular word in a link etc

2: Aim to the left or right of your target and move your character to line up the shot. No only does this give you more control (actually physically moving a sniper is a lot slower than adjusting his aim) it also throws off any opponent that is trying to counter snipe.

3: Get used to hitting moving targets. A big problem with TF2 snipers is that they tend to sit and have little sniper circle jerk battles with other snipers which actually does fuck all for your team. I've prevented plenty of captures on TF2 simply by popping the medic who's following behind a combat class.

4: Equipment. A decent high accuracy mouse with a nice refresh time will make life easier for you. It won't turn you into a pwning machine over night but you'll find the faster refresh rate will generally make impromptu sniping a lot easier. A decent, non stick mouse pad is good as well.

For me it had to be the original Unreal Tournament. That game wasn't so much about any sort of realistic representation of sniping, but it did set me on the path to mastering the headshot. The sniper rifle in that game could score a one-hit kill if you hit your opponent in the head, whether zoomed in or not. To this day I still try to play through games using as many headshots as possible, while using as little ammo as I can. It's extrordinarily fun with the right games.

America's Army also was fun in the sniping department. The more realistic approach definitely made that game interesting. I haven't played much Battlefield 2, but I know, at least in the original, that sniping was a fairly simple affair.

Know how to shoot the thing, how far ahead you need to shoot, travel times and all that. I base this on the differences between the snipers in the halo games including the first one

In TF2 I can easily outsnipe 90% of the players, and the other 10% usually ends up in a 1,2 sniper war

But in BF2 I suck to the high heavens, i never hit the first shot unless they're in the turret of a tank.

It really depends on the game you play, if you want hints,
i'd say get to know your enviroment, find a perfect spot for sniping in a singleplayer match.

If you can't beat an enemy sniper, try aiming for easier targets until you get confident or steady enough to nail that sonofa in the head.

Crouching after uncovering yourself works 80% of the time if you practise it enough combining it with different directions it can easily be the upperhand in any snipewar

In my opinion this is bad advice. Never stay still and rarely use what looks like a 'sniper spot'. If you recognize it as a sniper spot so will the guy with the grenade launcher. Keep moving, changing positions often and snipe from unusual positions. Snipers giving you a headache on 2Fort? They're always either on the battlements or in the doorways, the best place to countersnipe from is from the sewer opening which they never ever check because it's not a 'sniper spot'

Make sure you have great FPS rates. I noticed more than once that whenever the frame rate drops below 30 my efficiency is greatly diminished as a sniper.

The way I get used to moving targets is I never stay still, even while scoped. In my advice you should develop a type of swagger for your character while scoped, so that you are comfortable with moving with and to your target('s head) and that you are not an easy, immobile target the rest of the time. Make sure you go for cover every so often and come back seconds later to refresh your interest and attention. The more your attention is devoted to a small area, the more you endanger yourself.

I Meant check on the map for your own sniping place which suits you, every space with a small ammount of cover is a 'sniping spot' but try to find somewhere in the sniping locations which gives you an advantage, i.e; there was a small crack in TF1's dustdowl which was almost impossible to look through unless you were right next to it.

Years of training and very steady hands. Good FPS snipers frustrate the hell out of me because I've seen active combat as a sniper but am completely rubbish in games.
