]My friend is a godly sniper, he actually has always been very good at it, but now he is more than amazing. He attributes this to Battlefield 2. I've been playing a lot of games like that nowadays, and Battlefield 2, and I am slowly getting better. (Slightly above average sniper at best). What about you guys? What have you played to make your sniping better?
lol. for a moment i thought you meant real world sniping. you can actually find real sniper instruction manuals online if you look hard enough. oddly enough, some real world sniping techniques actually translate well in gaming.

for example, when firing at a group you only fire when the entire group is facing away. this ensures that no one sees your mussel flash when you fire. i've used that technique in Battlefield while taking out grouped plane campers. they never did locate my position.

i've also read airplane dogfights strategies and some of those even translate to games like Warhawk.

a lot of the player patterns in PVP videogames have actually been done to death in real warfare and the real world literature exposes typical noob mistakes within videogames.

Sniping is rediculousy easy on halo. Mainly because your accurate without even using the scope. Which is retarded/
Unique though, you have to agree.

Of course, in most other games hit anyone anywhere with a sniper rifle and they're dead. Seems pretty easy too me, easier than having to aim for the head.

I'm gonna go snipe someone now.

Practice. End of.

Seriously, sniping in one game to another is often as different as apples and pears. COD4 you'll likly kill them in a single shot, but have to get used to holding your breath. ETQW you'll only instant kill them if you hit the head, otherwise it's another shot. BF2 a body shot will take off something like 90, at which point you should immediatly switch out to your pistol without moving your crosshair and pop off a few. There is no way to be good at sniping in every game beyond practicing in each game. Let's be honest as well, learning to hit a moving target with a very highly powered rifle and a telescopic sight isn't really all that impressive unless you never miss and only get headshots. That's really the difference between skill and just being able to 'use' the rifle.

Although practice does make perfect, I think to get truly amazing at sniping you have to possess a certain amount of natural skill too. For example, gaming sense is important; knowing when to move, and when to camp/defend. Reaction speed is very important for sniping too. If you have the reactions of a dead goldfish, the chances are you're not gonna be a sweet sniper. Fast reactions make for a better sniper.

Practice makes perfect! I know I avoided a sniper for years but found I was able to pick it up fairly easily after all that time.

Avoid sitting in the same sniping spot for too long no matter what - as someone said most snipers just kill other snipers. Try moving around as much as you can and they won;t know what hit them.

I don't see why people continue sniping on source engine games, I used to play counstrike source heavily and once I realized how crappy the netcode is, I've put off the source engine games.

I'll probably come back to it. Seriously, why give laggers the advantage when you've clearly lined up a shot to the head and miss because of some "lag compensation". Valve's worst idea ever when it came to the source engine. This is the sole reason why CSS is NOT played competitively at that big league whose name I can't remember.

I used to think that 1.6 elitists were just stuck in the past and wouldn't move on, but now I realize how much better 1.6 is in regard to netcode.

Also, battlefield 2 servers generally tend to be really laggy as well, so I don't bother sniping on there either.

Anyway, for sniper tips: Make sure you know if the game you're playing has bullet drop, that'll really screw with you if you don't know.

I'd say Team Fortress 2, and it's probably because of all the different classes there are.

That makes for different head sizes, different weapons they have to fight back, the amount of health they have, and things of the like.

I firmly believe it has more to do with knowing the maps/hiding spots than anything else.

Of course that's true for any role in an FPS really, I'm a run and gunner but you gotta know where to run...
Always have an escape route for when people know your position and are moving in. If you can, try to find a spot to hide, allow them to run past you and then ambush. Even if you die, you'll probably get at least one kill.
