Like a Barret M82? Those things are like small highly accurate artillery cannons. Not the most subtle weapon either, very loud.

I consider myself to be a fairly decent sniper, at least in most of the FPS's i've played recently (BF2, BF2142, Quake Wars, COD4 etc). Here's a couple of pieces of advice that I find helps me.

1. Map your fire button to the keyboard! Seriously. It may seem odd to not have it assigned to mouse1, and indeed may take some getting used to but trust me, it helps with accuracy ALOT. When you click, you're going to move the mouse, even if it's only a little bit and this can throw off your aim significantly after the first shot, giving the target time to respond if you don't get them first shot (especially if your mouse's sensitivity setting is set higher than normal, like mine). Mapping the fire button to say, enter will mean that you can aim as normal with the mouse, and fire without throwing throwing off your aim.

2. Get a decent mouse. The best snipers do not use that bloody mass-produced microsoft affair that came free with your rig, period. Get yourself one that has good reviews and decent DPI. A heavier than average weighted mouse is probably best as well, as the more lightweight ones tend to sometimes move more than you intend (again, especially if your sensitivity is set higher than normal). A mouse is something you use practically every time you use your computer, so getting a good one is money well spent.

3. Don't pick the obvious sniping spots. Don't even THINK about sniping from a guard tower, or somewhere that can be seen easily from the other side of the map. You might as well just wear florescent pink armour, stick a bullseye on your head and announce your location in the open chat channel. Sniping is just as much about stealth as it is marksmanship.

Instead, pick somewhere less obvious, such as going prone in a bush at the base of the guard tower. Don't sit up on the roof or the top floor of a building. Fire from the first floor window. This has the added bonus that if you miss the first shot, your target will likely swivel around and look at the most obvious spots to try and spot you. This might give you time to re-aim and take him out with a second. Also, don't keep going to the same spot again and again if people kill you. It just means that they will automatically know where you are if you miss, and probably just turn around and kill you again. Move around between different spots, and always keep your opponents guessing. This is especially important on games like COD4, with the killcam.

4. Practice! I know I'm probably sounding like a broken record when I say this, but there is no substitute for experience. While general sniping experience carries over between games, don't just expect to be good at sniping at one game because you are in another. Each games weapons handle slightly differently, each game has different hitboxes (as has been said before)), and it takes time to get used to the nuances of sniping in each different game. But if you keep practicing and honing your skills, you WILL get better.

Cheers,

Play Sniper Elite: Berlin 1945. Seriously, you've never lived until you tried to pull off a 400m headshot that takes into account wind speed, wind direction, elevation, gravity, distance, heart rate, and whether or not you're holding your breath. That's on top of making sure that your camouflage and hiding spot keep you out of sight of any of your other enemies.

It also had awesome tactical things such as shooting an enemy in the neck or leg so that his buddy comes out of hiding to help him, only to have you cap both of them.

I always seem to be good at sniping, whatever game I play. I usually play Battlefied, COD or GOW.

Try using S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

It has the best ballistics of any game barring Operation Flashpoint.

To tell the truth I've never been a sniper until RSV came out. After that I just kept practicing at it with other games and as they say the rest is history.

The louder the better.

Thats because in RSV you can slap a scope on pretty much anything and use it as a sniper rifle.

Practice practice practice, and when sniping never sit still for more than 3-4 sec and always shoot from non sniperspot looking places. Just learn to react cause if you see them chances are they see or are about to see you. Don't go for headshots if a bodyshot will suffice Also don't stay in scope unless your ready to shoot. once your good its a really fun class to play in team games as you can control a point on the map and funnel People over to where your buddies are

True but at the same time I always hated using sniper rifles in any game. RSV just made me willing to use them in other games and helped my accuracy in using them.

Aside from learning the hit boxes in any given game, learning how a weapon handles (recoil, projectile speed, and how far the projectile will have dropped by the time it strikes a target down range.) I've always tried to get a feel for the ping between myself and the server I'm playing on and a rough average of the opposing team if possible.

When you have a nice handle on all of that it makes sniping much less frustrating, it definitely allows for better judgment on when to s squeeze off a round while getting a lead on your target.

No matter how you go about it sniping takes a lot of practice to become skilled at. (not to mention having a nice game-pad or mouse can help :p )

Get 2 rubber bands and curl it around the end of your thumb thrice and put a nail in the wall and hook up that BAMF and start flexing 'til your thumb gets ripped. But this only works for console gamers.

In order.

1: Practice acurate mouse movement whenever you can, even while you're browsing the net. Move from letter to letter in a sentence, click on a particular word in a link etc

2: Aim to the left or right of your target and move your character to line up the shot. No only does this give you more control (actually physically moving a sniper is a lot slower than adjusting his aim) it also throws off any opponent that is trying to counter snipe.

3: Get used to hitting moving targets. A big problem with TF2 snipers is that they tend to sit and have little sniper circle jerk battles with other snipers which actually does fuck all for your team. I've prevented plenty of captures on TF2 simply by popping the medic who's following behind a combat class.

4: Equipment. A decent high accuracy mouse with a nice refresh time will make life easier for you. It won't turn you into a pwning machine over night but you'll find the faster refresh rate will generally make impromptu sniping a lot easier. A decent, non stick mouse pad is good as well.
+ Practice x 3

+ Determination and Focus, you need to strive to improve, going at it half hearted would end up with poor results.

CoD4 was the very first online game i ever played. Very tough at first with all the snipers shooting me, but as i kept gaming i grew wise to their techniques (claymore. seriosly i never woulda thought of it) and am now a sniper myself. Kill-Cam dosn't bother me because i know that most people just hit square and are back to shooting shit.

When I was a younger guy, video games where my life. Everyday, all day. To the detriment of friends, school, anything. I was always the sniper.

And I was good.

Camping? Ha! Sniper rush! The 1-shot kill feature will always make the sniper rifle the ideal charge weapon.

The problem is those skills atrophy fast. A few years of actually having a life, and I've become absolute crap at playing combat games in general, and sniping in particular.

I'm so used to Claymores that when I when I stormed the house where the guy was sniping on Crash on Cage Match (a 1 on 1 match) I was starting to get really suspicious and nervous because there wasn't any traps at all. A case of "quiet, too quiet" syndrome.

Some advice to the OP: Don't forget to look out for other snipers hiding in common sniping spots. Don't scan the area looking for nothing but snipers, because then you'll miss the easy targets running out of cover. However, make sure that people can't get to your sniping spot too easily (i.e. Claymores on COD4, or getting to a spot that means that the only way to get a clean shot on you is by going out into the open, such as hiding in a small nook in a high up wall).

Well, Halo is a non-stop movement game, and if they see you and are shooting at you, it's pretty stressful. Plus the shot has a nice kick that you have to manually bring back down a bit to level with the target again.

Staying close to cover so you can hide if attacked is very essential, also you need to find good spots that allow a wide view, or a clear shot at a place that many people go (a hall or door way). Keeping another good weapon that you can use when attacked is good too, but even better is being able to no-scope. That takes a lot of practice and the ability to keep a level head when you're ambushed.

A bit of obvious advice here: keep your back to a wall - don't snipe in the middle of a room, and if you are sniping outside, do it while pressed up against a wall or the map boundary.

I firmly believe it has more to do with knowing the maps/hiding spots than anything else.

Of course that's true for any role in an FPS really, I'm a run and gunner but you gotta know where to run...
