I'm a pricktastic sniper, and to be honest, the blu-tac or scotch tape on your screen helps.

A lot.

I brought up the topic of sniping in games within earshot of an ex-paratrooper/ranger once.
He wasn't an actual sniper per se but the one of the spotters paired off with a sniper.
There so many things that developers have left out in regards to sniping, like free-floating barrels, corolis effect (Don't say CoD4 has that, its just a scrap of dialogue), trigger pull and heart-rate.
I believe that any player who says it comes naturally to them and didn't spend any time just stuffing around in an empty map are liars with their genitals on their heads, or bloody cheaters who'd be left helpless without their beloved aimbots

I don't consider myself an ace in video games, but I do quite well in most games, but I am so infuriated at CSS jerks and the obsession with "1337 sniper skillz" who using a f%#king bolt action rifle for close-quarters combat against SMGs.

but all that adds random effects to game that would compromise gameplay. You have to be impressed by some of the amazing awp shots that some people perform in CS. But i still think it takes more skill to pull off twitch ak shots to the head in cs than it is to AWP.

Also...... there are not that many aimbotters in CS..... its like 1/100 or less even that actually do it regurally

I totally agree on the mouse thing, and it absolutely MUST be wireless. But on another topic, I call bullshit on you catching arrows, maybe knives but unless someone threw the arrow at you, then I say you're lying.
Can't provide a video of me (there's no pictures of me on the net except for a court photo - but we won't get into that) but there's others who can do it (check some of the comments here: http://mythbusters-wiki.discovery.com/thread/924069/Catching+Arrow?t=anon ).

I never said how fast it was going. I wouldn't try it fired from a compound bow for example, but we used to do this with the bows we had in high school. All 6 of us (me and 5 mates) could do it - though we had a fair few accidents!

*shrugs* call BS or not, doesn't phase me. Nothing to prove, nothing to lose.
I'm not calling it BS, it just seems...unlikely, that's all.

First of all the Coriolis Effect is very easy to predict, its to do with the Earth's rotation, and would only factor into calculations when the target exceeds 300 metric metres.

Secondly, would not the so-called 1337 pros adjust their behaviour to these effects? Hell just the presence of humans creates a randomized effect.

Third, if the AK was portrayed the same way as reality, it would probably unbalance the game significantly.

However I was wrong on the hacks on CSS, I was not aware of Valve's anti-cheating system.

Yeah and with the release of steam there will be more anti-cheating systems like valves on almost every game :O

Unfortunately, VAC is a little bit hit and miss. Every time I play CSS, which is rarely I'll admit, someone, if not everyone, will be cheating.

You just keep playing until you gain sufficient muscle-memory ... sooner or later you'll be completely comfortable with your mouse and the weapon.

It's just a matter of game, practice and time. When I first rolled Sniper on TF2, I never though it would become my primary class.Start off slow and steady and you won't even notice as you're getting better. In fact the time when I noticed was somewhere around last week when I dominated four people and rolled off to a Pyro because two of these people decided to go for a personal vendetta against me and rolled spies.

I do agree however that AWP-Whores on CSS with a K/Dr of 7 deserve to die. They spoil the game for everyone and give weaker snipers self-esteem issues. In fact my attitude of "If I nailed at least three guys in one life then you can call it successful." is probably a lot more helpful than caring about some asshole who spent his last 38-hours playing on a Dust 24/7 server.

Btw, does anybody here use any kind of tricks to gain advantage at sniping? Personally, I usually draw the reticle on my monitor because Noscoping > SMG.

It comes from innate skill. My reflexes are naturally so good that when I was a Junior in High School I could catch bullets using my earlobes!

Oh, yeah? Well, I can catch light photons with my kneecaps!

All it is, as said dozens of times before, practice. I used to be an awful, awful sniper. But I tried to get better, I stuck with my sniper through thick and thin and now all that work has come back to me in full. I play mostly CoD4 on my 360 and on there I tend to really rape with my sniper. I've learned even how to hipshot, if one really can learn. I guess I just know where to shoot for the hipshot since I've gotten hundreds of hipshot headshots.

All in the practice, mate. Nothing more.

Yep, as its been said many the time now, Sniping well takes practice. Depending on the game, a lot of it has to do with effectively leading the target, and making sure you know how long your shot takes to get on its way into some poor sods frontal lobe. This applies to many things, including anti-tank weaponry, grenade launchers, rockets, you name it. Just lead the target, aim, and fire. The idea is to make sure that your shot meets up where the target is going to be when they both get there. :)

I've run into quite a few people who can snipe fairly well, but there always seems to be some twat who's cheating as much as he can. Frankly I don't see how they can be enjoying themselves, but I suppose their fun comes from robbing us of ours. One thing I've been noting about the average sniper in current games, is they get focused on the view from their scope, and don't look around that much.

In Battlefield 2142 for example, I'm forever racking up sniper kills against other snipers. Or when I really want to be a prick, I go for a walk up in the hills, and start stabbing them all in the back. :)

I'm a pretty decent sniper, but it's so much harder on things like TF2 to even hit the bastards who are running around trying to kill other people.

Trick is practice, don't panic, if you're waiting for someone to pop out maintain your crosshair at a constant horizontal/vertical level, and try and have smooth movement when 'chasing' a moving target. And be patient. And have good reactions. :D

Try Sniper Elite. It's a WWII game that implements marksmanship like the movie "Shooter", not a point'n'click Kill-a-Con.

Personally, I think Snipers are too easy in video games... I like games that actually try to balance the Sniper like Shadowrun where you can't shoot the gun unless you're zoomed in (and taking damage zooms you out)...

Games like Gears of War where the reticule is pointing at the same place whether you're zoomed in or not and there's hardly any bearing on things that would normally affect a sniper, like distance or even wind speed... just make it too easy...

Don't even get me started on Halo, fucking easiest sniper in gaming...

Sniper rifles are for girls-- real men use rocket launchers and other heavy weaponry.

Also, catching knives/arrows out of the air probably sounds a lot cooler than it actually is.

Its also futile, since if more then 2 come at you, your not going to catch them all

Some people are really good with sniper rifles.

However, the sort of people who shoot you as soon as you run from behind a corner are generally aimbotting. Either try to get the bastard kicked, or just quit.

Hackers make me sick.
That's still possible without cheating, just not very easy. You pretty much only need to know the height of a standing player's head and have good reflexes and timing. Have the crosshair aimed at where a player's head will be when they've run around the corner and pull the trigger at the right time.
