I think Lost Planet did the sniping right. I can get a 10+ kill streak, 4+ headshots and feel pretty damn good about it. Then, when some one figures out where I am and comes after me in a giant mech, that's when the real fun begins. Plus, I like the feeling of actually covering my teammates. You know, like snipers are supposed too? What ever happened to teamwork.

I grew up playing games like quake and Unreal Tournament and as such I have no tolerance for the sitting and waiting that sniping requires. My only problem with snipers is that they are rarely contributing in a meaningful way to the team's success or failure. Indeed, most snipers, even the very skilled, rarely achieve more than griefing.

This is not to say that in all games snipers are useless or even that all snipers are useless. Simply that much of the time, a sniper's goal is to rack up kills, and in most games this is hardly a contribution to the effort. Exceptions are made for snipers in Team Fortress (they provide a valuable counter to any number of situations and provide the first line of defense for a base), or snipers that actually watch friendly points in games like battlefield (they provide a valuable deterrant if nothing else).

Snipers are not generally deployed to cover an advance. This is a job better suited to (and better performed by) artillery, or in a pinch, medium and heavy gun teams. Snipers are generally deployed in an observation post and are generally used as a screening force (that is, a force designed to make first contact with the enemy, ascertain their strength, and if all goes well, loosen up the opposing battleline).

Of course, this isn't to say I don't appreciate it when a skilled sniper in a video game covers my advance, because in most video games there IS no artillery and medium and heavy machine guns are either not available or worse for the job than most other weapons.

I don't know either, but it's so much fun, I'm definately in that 70%,
It's so addictive.

And I am a tactical sniper, I move with the action providing covering fore and getting quick headshots on folk who misuse cover. Sniping is not always camping

This is what I meant. I play alot of rts games as well. I would never favor a sniper over say, a howitzer, to cover my units advance.
I meant in game like LP, they give you heavy long range weaponry that was specifically meant for covering fire, like the plasma gun. It's meant to take down mechs from a distance. Mechs are very hard to take out up close and personal(assuming the pilot isn't retarded) so often I or one of my team is relegated to "cover duty".
That being said, there are often heavy turrets that you can customize to act as artillery, which is far more useful. Only some of the maps have that though.

Me and the demoman share a common view of snipers.

All snipers should be ready to die and respawn as another class if the situation requires it. Spawning as a sniper when your base is under attack is a sign of the noob

I'm terrible at sniping in multiplayer games. If I have cover and am not spotted in single-player games, I might go for sniping, if only to take out a bunch of guys that won't be in my face anymore.

Pretty damn good at slowing an infantry batallions rate of advance to.

in BF:BC i'll take sniper occasionally, depending on the situation and whether it could benefit our team the most. like a relatively close-quarters map i'll sometimes take it mainly to just spam the motion sensors where the enemy is attacking to clue in my teammates. i'll end up using the pistol or knife rather than the long gun most times in those cases, and i feel that makes the most of the so-named "Recon" class. good to have one-two crack shots picking away at their guys, but more than three starts going into liability territory.

defending the first base once on Harvest Day i busted no less than three enemy sniper nests trying to spawncamp us from the hills on the left side of the base, knifing three oblivious guys back to back is both awesome and slightly sad, i mean you feel bad for guys on the other team having to lose due to moron snipers, everyone knows the feeling after a while.

sniping can cause some absurd events, was attacking on Valley Run and most of the game i'd been switching between demo, specialist, assault and support depending on the situation, we punched through to the last base with tons of lives left and i see a teammate sniper die so i figured i can relax a bit now and do a little long range shooting while the rest of the team mops up (not to brag or anything but through the fighting i was way at the top points-wise and felt i'd done my share of the grunt work).

five minutes later we've lost two-thirds of our lives, it seemed like everyone was just hanging back either sniping exchanging machine gun/rocket/mortar fire with the defenders, no attempts really to even get close, much less destroy the final crates. one of my squadmates shot me up, maybe pissed that i was a sniper and somehow not winning the match for them anymore, that annoyed me but when i finally died (after about 8 kills with my borrowed rifle) i took demo again and with a lot of luck i actually got to one of the crates and armed it, died and they disarmed it due to having no back-up to defend it... yeah we lost. the next game with the same group that same guy killed me right off the bat, i went "screw this" and ditched them, presuming they got steamrolled and rightfully so.

i guess it's deviating from the topic a little, but is it wrong to expect teammates to pull their weight at least a bare minimum? well that does stay on topic with all those snipers who play the entire match and end with like 4-5 kills, not really helping there. i allow for newer players trying to get practice at it and all, but with this being the first Bad Company, i gotta wonder at how many are still novices at sniping to be playing so badly.

I think people do it for the nature of competitive gaming. If most games were never about K/D and instead focused primarily on teamwork (BC2), there would probably be less snipers. Look at Left 4 Dead...

Watching your prey, that's what they are at this point, move around, unaware of your presence and then BAM, a quick shot to the head. The loud, ringing noise still lingers ever so slightly in the area. A guttural cry that causes anyone who isn't you to panic.
Everyone, without even thinking, scatters like roaches in the middle of an illuminated kitchen. Doesn't matter where they go, any cover is good cover at this point, but they don't want to stay there. You're there.

These moments of pure excitement are worth the slow, tedious routines of waiting.

That's why I feel compelled to anyway.
Quite possible the most eloquent way to say that killing people without them expecting it is fun.

In all seriousness, though, sniping is fun for that reason. Also, it's good for the people who are slaves to their K/D ratios.

see the "realistic shooter" includes snipers because in rel life they are integral. however unlike in real life gamers want kills they dont play up the role snipers r supposed to do, which is support. in the real world the sniper of the team will keep an eye on his team or whats ahead of them and take out any enemy that could pose a threat. In game the sniper just kills doesnt give a rats ass bout his team because he knows they wont ACTUALLY die. Thats y i have a problem with "realistic shooter" the developers expect the gamer to take it seriously. (if there r any horrible spelling or grammatical error pls understand i have a stats final in 2 min so i types this fast and ran)
