http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/fans-throw-explosive-player-getting-treatment-during-match-220657431--sow.html

So, during a soccer match, an explosive, reportedly thrown by a fan who is still at large, goes off near a player being treated for possible injuries by medical staff. There were no serious injuries after the explosion, but the video provided by the link doesn't make me feel any less comfortable with that knowledge. I've heard of some crazy things being thrown during sports games - stuffed animals, chairs, even benches...but explosives?

Hooo boy.

Also, inb4 crazy soccer fans.

Does anyone else know of anything crazy or weird being thrown during sports games? I wonder what could be thrown during a bowling match...

For those of you that don't want to go to the link:

Now for my comment: What the fuck is wrong with some sports fans? I love sports. Vikings...and...uh...OK, I love football and I love playing other sports but I would never even imagine doing anything like this. It's d-bags like this that give the other 99% of sports fans such a bad rap.

I've never seen anything bad thrown onto the field of play (drinks/food are probably the very worst). I went to a pre-season Vikings game this year and security is so tight (I had to empty my pocket and get scanned by a metal detector) that it would be risky for someone to try to slip a butter knife into the stadium, let alone a bomb.

And I expected this to be a theoretical scenario...

Going to a match with the intent of causing harm is the same thing as killing a prominent figure because you admire them. Where the hell is te logic behind that?
You're not doing your team a favour by killing enemy players and you're certainly not helping the image of the fandom which is shit already because of decades of this stuff.

For years the English have been banned from attending soccer games all across Europe because they insist on throwing punches at every single game.

Have... have you fallen through a time warp from the 1980s or something? English hooliganism hasn't been a major problem for many years. Seriously, I've heard reports that England fans have generally been praised for their behaviour during the past few major soccer tournaments abroad. Not that I really keep track of fan behaviour all that much, but every source I've seen asserted that the bad old days of English hooliganism are long past.

OT: Jeez, that's a pretty serious incident. What got into the fan's head? Did he think he was doing his team a favour by incapacitating an already injured opposing player? Slightly more disturbingly, how did he get that explosive in? I thought security at stadiums was pretty darn tight these days.

As an aside, I have heard of some black players having bananas thrown at them while fans on the other team chant racist insults. Again, something that's gradually dying out, but sadly still happens from time to time.

Give us a break.

We may get into the odd fight (of which i'm guilty) but we don't bomb the fething pitch.

On Topic....

Drunken brawls aside, as I just said, we don't throw shit at the players and ruin the game (although i've been tempted these past few season ... to throw things at MY team that is ... these past few seasons have been a bit shit).

I wouldn't throw explosives though. Probably a tomato and a few harsh words.

What on earth is wrong with you Europeans and soccer. I swear, if it wasn't for soccer, we would have had another world war because you guys can't expel your anger peacefully.

One match I saw in England was terrifying...and I was English (Living in Australia...good)
Everyone started to scream at the ref calling him a wanker.

The chant went like this. "The ref is a wanker..." and repeat. Why do you take it SO seriously. Why don't you guys settle down with a Call of Duty game to get all that anger out. But that does suck that BOMB went off.

That isn't good if you take a sport THAT seriously.

*sigh* I would just like to ask this guy: why? Did you think nothing would happen?

I think the most accurate answer you could ever get would be "Because YOLO that's why."

*cringe*

Also, insert mandatory comment about "Curse you for calling football soccer" here.

Except if Manny U win or loses in the finals. Then it's rioting all around.

Damn soccer causes a lot of violence!
Was sadly, a good land. Imagine if it was actually a frag or nail bomb or 'nade. Looks more like a homemade flashbang, still pretty scary he got it IN THE STADIUM

That's what you call terrifying? Pretty standard hazing.

Eh? I've been around a good while and I've only ever heard of the worst troublemakers being banned, and that was primarily in the 80's and 90's. Otherwise who the hell were all those fans at the European matches? Did they dress up the home crowd in England shirts just for a laugh?

You get half price tickets if you're willing to wear an England shirt for the duration of the match.

Killing a figure you admire. Isn't that what Mark David Chapman was doing when he shot John Lennon? Then again, he wasn't all there...

The problem with hooliganism is that the authorities and clubs often tend to tend to take a "boys will be boys"/"but it's part of our culture!" mentality to the whole thing. When mainstream fans finally wake up and realize that throwing flares and starting riots in crowded stadiums actually leads to horrible injuries and/or deaths (and their own teams getting penalized by the league) and authorities start cracking down on violent mobs masquerading as "fan clubs", the problem can be tackled pretty effectively. Nowadays, British hooliganism is a dim shadow of what it once was - it's probably the "fans" from the Balkans (especially those who see the pitch as a surrogate for the battlefields of 20 years ago) that are considered Europe's worst troublemakers at the moment.
