So ignoring the stupid title (I couldn't think of a more eloquent way to write it), who is a character that's died in a series (Book, Film, T.V, Video Games), but you consider to still be easily the best character. For me I have two
Eddard Stark from Game of Thrones, L from Death Note and arguable Oberyn Martell from A Song of Ice and Fire. Firstly I'm choosing TV Neddy over book Ned, purely based on Sean Bean's acting chops. Sean Bean was perfect in so many ways as the character of Ned that he just stole the show for me. Rather than book Ned who appeared cold and oddly similar to Stannis in his overwhelming sense of personal justice, I felt that that the TV version was incredibly fleshed out and his sense of right and wrong felt less like naivety and just the personality of a man who'd seen some shit and I cannot think of Game of Thrones without thinking of Ned Stark.

L from Death Note in my opinion was the show. He stole literally every scene he was in and his methodical nature and childlike curiosity made him instantly one of my favourite characters in any media. There's so much more that I could say on the character, but I think the best way to describe him, is that his death turned a 10/10 show into a 7/10 show.

Finally I'd like to spiel on Oberyn Martell. This man is pure charisma. Literally the first time he sauntered into the book, with his extravagant convoy of Dornish nobles and his back and forth between Tyrion, arguably the third - second most intelligent character in the books (Petyr Baelish and Varys are the likely top two) was one of the best introductions the books had given any character. While only appearing occasionally in the story, every scene he was in revolved around him and he had quite possibly the greatest death in any series I've ever scene, crippling the Mountain who Rides and doing it with so much style and flair, that when he inevitably had his skull crushed, I threw the book across the room in rage.

Vegeta died several times, and he was always the best character. He at least had an arc and his dynamic with the other cast members changed over time.

Yeah but in the Dragon Ball Universe death is a but a slap on the wrist. There was nary a before-and-after in the show concerning death, let alone Vegeta's.

I agree. Even though death does end up being a minor nuisance at most in the shows universe, this scene
is pretty great. It's still DBZ, and thus copious amounts of overdone cheese and ham are still present, but it's a pretty touching moment by the show's standards.
It was great seeing someone who started off as such an whiny little shrimp doing something so selfless.

Sons of Anarchy spoiler, early season 5!

Opie Winston, Sons of Anarchy, he was somehow the last nail of sanity in Jax's conscience coffin. He managed to be that without being a "buzzkill".

Six posts and Gurren Laggan has not be mentioned yet? The heck

Jorgun and Balinbow. They had the best death scene out of all the extras. I guess Kamina too.

I'm going to assume everyone who cares has already read Harry Potter.
--
I don't remember enough since its been a while since I've read the book (maybe someone can make a better argument for me), but Severus Snape from Harry Potter.

I initially thought of him as one of the main antagonist and I was pretty sure of it at the end of 6th book. He dies near the end of the series so I don't think this example is what you're looking for..

But damn, with how much depth he's been given throughout the series, easily the best character from the series.

Aeris from Final Fantasy 7.

Best limit breaks. Best personality (I loved how playful she was).

(and, in case you are tempted to tell me "Aerith" - no. Her name is Aeris. "Aerith" is just a bad Japanese pronunciation of "Earth" - which is a crappy word for Terra, who was the protagonist of FF6.)

Note: I didn't include spoilers because everyone knows that Aeris dies. It has been mentioned in other threads without spoilers - she is, in fact, one of the most famous dead characters in video game history.

General Hughes from FullMetal Alchemist and Brotherhood...

In FullMetal Alchemist, when he died, I was devastated since he was (to me) an important character... He was that perfect comic relief that doubled as someone you could trust with your life...

In Brotherhood, I still felt he didn't have to die... But, luckily, the series post-Hughes's death made his death more justifiable and meaningful... and I was always glad when they showed more flashbacks of him with Roy Mustang...

Hughes... Your wife and daughter miss you... and so do I... *sniffs* (Yes, I know he acted the same in both series... Brotherhood just gave more flashback moments with him, in my opinion...)

Edit: Almost spoiled my (short) retrospective of the character...

the character I was going to mention for this thread was actually Android 16, in part specifically because in a show where death seems more like a temporary inconvenience for heroes and innocents alike, (and even while they are dead are shown pretty happily chilling out in other world as a rather comfortable place), android 16 actually died died. As in after being destroyed he no longer existed, forever more(he didn't even come back when they wished everyone back), all just to get gohan to step up and fight.

Android 16 was my favourite character of dbz :p

Dude, try telling us which series you are talking about before spoiler tagging!
Shinjiro Aragaki, forever a badass, taking death like a fucking boss! He died saving Ken, who is a lamer character gameplay wise (he is a good character, but come on, its fucking Shinjiro)

"Adios Asshole"

I foresee many spoilers being posted here...
Sorry about that, it's been a while since I've written anything in the forums and I'd forgotten how to include a title for the spoiler. Why I didn't think to just write it at the top, I haven't the foggiest, probably because I can be stupid at times.

Ah Buffy the Vampire slayer, you build a set of characters teach us to love them and then start torturing them.

Ok its been about a year since Tara died for me and i still get upset when i think about it, seriously that was the first show in a long time the genuinely had me in tears. She was my favourite character, always got the soft spot for characters who are constantly only trying to do the right thing, especially in the face of Whedon's systematic destruction of everything they love. Oh and if Whedon has his way, it'll happen to the avengers too, Marvel films so far have been Buffy season one, now he'll really start to tear them to pieces.

Well, Brotherhood followed the manga page to page almost, so in that version, he actually HAD to die. It was the 2003 series that changed fucking everything, and maybe he would not have had to die in that one.

Chris was my favourite character... his carefree attitude, and the fact that he was always so happy! Even when he died! I love how content he was at the time of death, that he remembered his girlfriends name!

I also like the way that his death was told through the eyes of everone else. It had been a while since his own episode, so you don't even know that he is ill until just before it happens. It is also a great story because of how close they all were. Through the 2 series the group had started to drift apart, and a few rifts had appeared. Tony's brain damage managed to slow the rate of this, but Cassie's spiral had started it again. Chris was the character who was keeping them all together due to his impartial neutrality with all of the goings on.

Incidentally, when thinking about it now, it was actually a good time for him to die, and it needed to happen. Chris was the character who was holding them back too. He was the embodiment of their youth, and how they used to be. He represented their wild lifestyles and their irresponsibility and his own future was inevitably going to fail. His passing, coupled with the end of their schooling, allowed the others to branch out and live their own lives.

BTW... I have't seen series 7 yet, so I haven't seen the 'what happens next' part, so please don't spoil that for me!

The examples from Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist previously mentioned were the first that came to mind for me.

Kelsier. He was easily my favourite character in the first novel and his death scene was freaking awesome. He played a pivotal role in the series as well as Vin's mentor.

Sniper Wolf, who died in MGS. She has a great backstory that's elaborated in the most heartbreaking soliloquy when she lies dying in the snow after the sniper fight. "I wasn't waiting to kill someone ... I was waiting for someone to kill me."
