First up, let me be frank here. I don't hate Call of Duty, nor do I hate its fanbase. I've been a long-time fan of the series. Not hardcore or anything, but they make for good stress release. So anyway, story time.

I do Bikram Yoga. I'm notably not in good shape, I just started. I sit behind a computer during my free time, and when I'm at work, I sit behind a computer some more. I hate gyms, but I need something for physical activity. Anyway, for those out there that aren't familiar with Bikram Yoga, it's done in an extremely hot and humid room and it takes a lot out of you - especially if you're as unfit as me. I had Yoga this morning, bright and early at 6am (I'm not a morning person, either). When I got out and got home, I just wanted to relax for a bit and release some stress. Looking over my game library, I decided to boot up Modern Warfare 2 since it had been a while since I last played.

I kinda felt like messing around, so I went with a fairly noobish class setup... an M-240 LMG with Grip and Thermal Scope, Stinger, Semtex, 2x Flashbangs, Bling Pro, Stopping Power Pro, Steady Aim Pro, and Painkiller. The map was Rundown. I started off at the C spawn and rushed toward the A spawn, taking two people down when I got there. I had no backup, so I retreated back to the steps leading up to the B hallway. I took out two more people who tried to follow me through the tunnel, then covered the B hallway while a teammate covered the tunnel. I LMG sniped three more players at the other end of the tunnel and called in my Harrier Airstrike on the A spawn. The bombs killed one player and the jet killed another before being shot down. Called in my Pavelow. My Pavelow took down four players before being shot down. I managed another kill at B hallway before being hit by an RPG-7 rocket. I spawned by A, took to the second floor of the building, and sniped from there for the last minute or so of the game. I ended up going 18/1. So I had a pretty decent game.

Except for the three or four players, one of which on my team, who spent the entire game accusing me of wall hacking. What the hell? Really?

So if a player is having a good game, suddenly it's because they're hacking. Not because they just had a good game. Not because they got a bit lucky. Not because their air support shredded you and no one thought to shoot it down. Not because the player was hardscoped onto a single well-traveled point that players kept walking right into over, and over, and over again. Oh no. Absolutely none of that. It's because the player is hacking!

Really guys, are the egos really that ridiculous that you can't accept that maybe, just maybe, you should have shot down the air support and tried flanking me? I really don't understand why players think that taking a page out of Zap Branigan's Big Book of War and trying to throw wave after wave of their own bodies into my hail of 7.62x51mm bullets will cause me to hit a pre-set kill limit and shut down.

Back when I used to play MW2 more often, I saw this from time to time. But not every single time that someone got off a lucky shot, or had a good game. Now it's just ridiculous. So, Escapists, of you who also play the CoD games...

What's the deal?

Is this really a question or are you just trying to show off?

They accuse you of hacking because they're angry that they did so badly, and completely perplexed because they probably do pretty well most of the time, and consider themselves decent players.

Doesn't take a great leap of empathy to understand why they're angry at you.

So, again, are you just showing off?

Hell no, not showing off. I'm usually pretty terrible.

And I'd like to reiterate that there's a pretty big difference between being upset that you didn't do so well, and frothing at the mouth accusing other players of hacking.

If I have to be more clear, what I'm trying to understand is why CoD players, or at least MW2, are so quick to jump to that particular conclusion. It's never ever that a mistake was made, or that someone was just having a good game. It's that it was hacking. The only way a player could have done well was with hacks.

It's the ridiculous speed and immaturity in which players seem willing to band together in miniature hacker witch hunts that I don't quite get...

Stopped playing the games when they went from WW2 to Modern Warfare. Modern guns suck, dont like them at all. WW2 games were limiting and better with your choices. Modern guns do everything in one gun. Zoom, snipe, full auto....they do everything. So i find that boring.

I didn't get a sense of smugness from the article, it sounded pretty genuine. Honestly, you gotta realize something. Most of the people who are still playing the game at this point are waaaay too hardcore into it. Especially MW2. So most of them don't exactly have reason to go with their playstyle. They naturally assume if they play so much, they must be better than some guy they've never seen before. At least...that's what I take out of it. I love the games, but the majority of the CoD players...especially ones sticking around with MW2, aren't exactly known for their maturity or sensibility levels. Personally though...after Black Ops I'm done. They're becoming worse than a sports franchise with a new game every year or so. And many people who DO keep buying them, are going to be said people you mentioned most likely.

Is this really a surprise to you? How often do you play? I don't own MW2, but in Black Ops, any player that has a very good KD is accused of hacking by at least three people. Nothing ever comes of it.

And did you really need to give us the play-by-play? I don't really understand the purpose of the second paragraph, and the third paragraph could probably have been condensed to "I played a round on Rundown and had a KD of 18:1."

Welcome to the COD community. You should know by now that it consists of 85% of little kids who scream at everything or everyone because of their own flaws or jealousy. You should learn to ignore the idiots in that game.

No point getting mad over it.
It's not really anger I'm feeling. If someone had actually gone to the trouble of reporting me and had to be suspended from Steam during an investigation that eventually lead to absolutely no findings of hacking, that'd make me angry (happened to a friend of mine way back in the CS days with WON).

Really, I'm just confused.

If I have a bad game, and I see a player kicking the crap out of my team, I try to figure out what they're doing and adapt to it. I try to counter them. Or if I can't counter them, I try to learn what it is that they're doing so that I can then do it myself in future games.

There are times I've seen legitimate hackers, sure. The people that run around a map, headshot every single player from a mile away with a handgun and hitting with every single round, and are completely immune to taking damage. I've seen it, it happens, it's painfully obvious when it's happening.

But some people really just are good, or having a good game, or got lucky. So I don't really understand why the playerbase seems to lump those people into the same group with the above-mentioned obvious legitimate hackers.

Yes. Their egos really ARE that ridiculous!

But it is not confined to CoD. The same thing has happened to me in Battlefield: Bad Company2, Day of Defeat, Counterstrike, Team Fortress 2 and many other first person shooters.

You just need to learn to ignore the idiots.

Were the first 2 paragraphs really necessary? Yoga? What?

OT: It's a fall back excuse for any multiplayer game, just take it a as a compliment.

As a fairly competent CoD player I must say I run into the calls of hacking quite often, and the thing I love about the most recent iteration is the theater. When I'm accused I just tell them to review the tape, see the game from my perspective so they know about things like the spy plane that told me they were camping on the other side of that wall, or the random grenade I threw that just happened to get an odd bounce off a ledge and got a kill. I have made a couple accusations of hacking, though before I do I always watch the tape, check kill cams, make sure what they are doing has no possible explanation beyond having some aim assist mod or wallhack.

I gave up on CoD multiplayer around the time I...

No wait, I never got sucked into it in the first place, I've been playing Battlefield since 1942. Carry on.

"i don't play MW2 as much as i used to, i wasn't too bad at it, buti decided to boot it up and have a short one. i had a pretty good round straite of the bat and got accused of wall hacking..what's the deal?"

is what it should have read, but it didn't, and you spent half of that massive OP talking about yoga and your physical fitness wtf? Stick to relevant gaming points please, the yoga stuff just make you sound like a douche.

But back on point, the answer to your question is 'every game has it's d!cks' i beat wholesale ass at MW2, everyday, i play HCTDM only and i hit 30-40 kills per match regularly, and i get all the hate mail that comes along with it when you have a good game. It's to be expected. In the end it pays to remember the age old rule of success..

Personally, I suck hard at CoD, but I play as stress relief like you do. I generally just mute anyone i want at the drop of a hat and jump games if i'm not having a good time. I've never called anyone a cheater in CoD though, I know i suck. I've only ever seen obvious hacks in TF2 and Modern Warfare 1, but it's very possible that is coincidental. I am that guy that runs into the same sniper fire over and over again, but it's not a sniper hack, it's that I can never remember the layout of the maps.

And right there is why I gave up on all FPS multiplayers after UT (yes I am a UT "fanman" but it has the best league system i've seen in an FPS game).

I tried a few of the later FPS games like CoD and TF2 but found it quite boring listening to people whine about being killed as if they were gods gift to shooters.

Even more hilarious is having someone call you a "noob" repeatedly because you keep killing him .... hold on here flash, i'm slaughtering you and yet i'm the "noob", yep, that makes sense .... tool.

I'm not claiming to be an amazing FPS player but I have been playing them since I was 13, 18 years ago, so i'm not too shabby. It just gets irritating having a bunch of whiners piss and moan when you kill them and go as far as accusing you of cheating.

I'm not going to blame kids either I know a couple of blokes around my age that are just as bad as some of the younger ones. Take it far too much to heart when they get killed.

The people on MW2 suck now, it's just the people who want to snipe cause the sniping is lame in Blops and the people who are poor.

It is in my opinion the best CoD game out there but the community has left it behind.
