Interesting: now I will have to check this game out.
Just be warned, it'll be a bit of an adjustment phase to say the least. It's a game that is difficult to learn, but easy to master, if that makes any sense.

Best of luck! If you are unsure on what to do, the wiki is a good place to start.

People who can even understand what they are looking at in dwarf fortress remind me of the guy in the Matrix who said that he had been looking at the Matrix code for so long that he no longer saw scrolling numbers and letters but rather people, places, and things.

Heh, I did sort of nod in agreement when I last saw that scene. But I think it's more about habit than anything. If you can get over the first hurdle, you'll pretty soon get the Matrix-eyes. Or marked by Armok as one of his own, depending on how you look at it.

I saw a lower case g on some sort of sign once, and immediately thought "Goblins!", though.

There are tilesets out there that does make it easier, if one would like them. I think most of them are being updated for the new patches at the moment.

EVERY time someone mentions anything at all that happened in Dwarf Fortress, I crack up. As has been mentioned before, even the bugs are hilarious.

I've never played the game, and probably never will, but it still keeps entertaining me!
I can advise you to google boatsmurdered. It's a continuation game were multiple people each played a single game year, the passed the game to the next and describe what happened.
It's hilarious there's murder, mayhem and weapons a mass destruction.

Hmm. Another new addition to dwarven psycology and personalities is the fact that they can become horrified. For instance, an unaccustomed dwarf seeing a dead body will be horrified, stop what he's doing and go away. Most dwarves seem able to accustome themselves to nasty things with time, but not all. It'll be interesting to see how it develops, since as it stands, it practically makes some individuals unrecruitable to the defense militia.

How did the test fortress go? Well... Werelizard. The troops got bitten, and I forgot to have them quarantined. They turned to werelizards the next full moon and wrecked half the fortress and infected more of the survivors.

The corpses everywhere did hold the more sheltered civies in check while I walled the fortress in to stop the pandemic then and there. After a year, or so, Patient Zero is still alive and reasonably well, with booze and food for several years, provided the ghosts don't kill him. It's a shame I didn't get an opportunity to observe more of the new features but it was a damn fun premier fort nonetheless.

Now...

In a last news broadcast, dwarven homosexual marriage is now possible. It is a rare phenomenom, but it happens. It is a feature, although it was suspected at first to be a bug. Confirmed by the developer. Previously, the dwarves only romanced and married the opposite sex, now they have different orientations.

The inevitable flame war lite has indeed occured. Slightly disappointing (flame wars are usually mercifully few in the community), but brief.

The general consensus (beyond the "finally gettin wit the 20tens" vs the "shoving pawlitics in muh faec" kneejerks) seems to be that it is a welcome feature, but must remain optional (sexual orientations can be altered in the game files as of now), due to player preferences and ensuring dwarven babbys in more tricky forts. It's unlikely that it won't remain optional.

I'm suddenly glad DF is not particularly well known outside a few circles, this would be the sort of thing Social Justice Slackers(c) and Anti Social Nobbers(c) would love to needlessly fight over.

We must close the gates, and hide in silence, lest we rouse them from the deep.

May Armok save us.
