Lvl 55 is more than enough to get through the dungeon and the game. I found added effect>time materia in weapon great on the master tonberries, as it has a slight chance of freezing the enemy so you can spam free attacks at him. In fact, added effect>time combo got me through the WHOLE DAMN GAME. much more unbalanced than i remember it when i was 10...

Also, the master tonberries only use everbody's grudge every two attacks on him, so i take someone who hasn't seen much play in my party up to this point (such as cait sith) and make sure he is the one to absorb the damage, which is pathetic if he has only killed a few enemies over the course of the playthrough.

For people that have played it, otherwise I don't think you'll understand this...

I'm at the Northern Cave in the last area of the game, there are stupidly annoying enemies that kill you in one hit, I'm confused as to where the hell I'm going etc. It seems like I'm basically screwed...

It honestly feels like I just wasted 30 hours of my life playing this otherwise amazing game.

If anybody can offer some advice who knows the game, it would be appreciated.
The two best tips;
* Use Command Materia
* Use Enemy Skill

The first thing you gotta do in Northern Crater is to command enemies into using certain Enemy skills on you. Such as Dragon Force.
This is essential in this place because if I recall, it makes you immune to death and every enemy in NC just loves to final-attack you with an instant death spell.
Death Force renders you immune to Insta-death attacks and it's learned from Adamantaimai (giant turtles encountered on the beaches near Wutai). Still, Manipulate is necessary to get it.

Do you have a players guide from GameFaqs, or one of those sites?

I haven't played FF7, but I can tell you from other FF games what the players guide will say: it will tell you either you need to level up some (especially if you've been going straight through the game without any of the side activities; and if you need to grind, it will tell you where to go), or it will say there is some particular piece of equipment or ability you need to protect yourself, or these enemies can be skipped for now and you may run into them again later in the game.

Whenever I get a roleplaying game I get a players guide from online. I try not to use it to keep the game pure, but after I've completed an area it is a good idea to read about the part you've just been through to be sure there isn't something important you've missed. That's especially true of JRPGs.

My friend hit a wall way back then in the Temple of Ancients, right at that demon wall boss. He tried and tried. Then he finally caved in and cried (literally, we were young back then) to his big brother about it.
His advice? "Yeah, grind to around level 60 and you should be good." (Try as I might, I cannot help but, in hindsight, recall his expression curled into an incredible trollface).
AND HE DID.

For those who don't know, you're supposed to be somewhere around level 20 to 30 or so. And he didn't even try to do it before he hit that magical level 60 mark.

Let's just say that yeah, he sure didn't have problems beating the thing afterwards.

Hey everyone, the Running away worked well and I got up to Sephiroth :3 One Winged Angel started playing so I assume it was the finale... Or more afterwards >_>

Christ he took me out after a couple of minutes... I guess I do need to do more grinding somewhere as much as I loathe it. Cheers for all the help.

I recall there is some "escape" materia that let's you cast magic to attempt a retreat or someting to the like. I never used it much myself and I think it was a bit hit and miss like most luck based magic. Ofcourse there are many enemies which retreat is not allowed from.

Make sure you don't deploy that save crystal till you right near the final bosses......

Frustrating thing about the cave beyond only having one save is that for the majority of the game the random fights you have are not overly challenging and become repetitive. Then all of a sudden you have these ultra tough enemies that can slaughter you in an instance. The curve just goes off the chart!

You can run from Tonberries. You can Morph Tonberries into Ribbons. You are not forced to fight them.

Sorry.

Just do the old JRPG plan A: Leave, level up, return.
Pretty much. Go raise some chocobos, get some items, kill some weapons, or just sit around somewhere attacking things. Maybe go to the Golden Saucer and see about getting Omnislash. Then go back when you're more powerful and continue on. It's worth it.

This is where the game screws you, because all throughout the game everything was straight-forward, you always had enough experience from your previous battles, but here you actually have to level grind before you try to progress.

Also, if you see a Tonberry, FUCKING RUN

if you fight and defeat Ultimate Weapon (the big dragon flying around the map) you'll get Cloud's Ultimate Weapon the Ultima Weapon (such a clever name) you have to fight him like 3 or 4 times before you beat him (he'll run away a couple of times) but it helps immensely

Ah yes, the Tonberries, those things are a *****.
Anyway, you're basically at the gauntlet. If your struggling just do as others have said and do the usual JRPG strategy: Level Grind.
Also did you get the Knights of the Round summon? It's a pain in the ass to get but it's well worth it. Esp. if you combine it with Clone.

If you made it that far (past Bizarro anyway) you should be ok. Just remember that Supernova is incapable of killing you outright. The most dangerous attacks he can use are Deen, Pale Horse and Shadow Flare (I think, it's been a while). Shadow flare will probably kill you instantly though.

Otherwise equip status protection accessories like the white cape or, if you have any ribbons use those.

oh, also a big help is buying HP PLUS materia, you put enough AP on those things and it can more than double your total HP, you can buy that Materia in Mideel

Yeaaaah it can be pretty stupid.. My recommendation, get W-Item (I think that's the right Materia?) and learnt he item duping trick, then go dupe a shedload of elixirs. Come back to the Northern Crater (particularly get to the swamp-like area where you run through underwater paths and such) then start throwing Elixirs at the Lanterns that fight you there. Once you do that, kill them off for godlike AP boosts lol.

The other enemies there are pretty good experience too.

Or you could totally be a douche to Sephiroth, dupe a bunch of Megalixirs and use them every round. As for the rest, you started this thread saying you've only played around 30 hours? I'm somewha tnot surprised you've had trouble.

Heh, my clock on my game is maxed out at 99:99. I did everything I possibly could in that game, including wasting time trying all those "Bring Aeris back to life" things. Fun game.

On Topic: Have you beaten the weapons yet? Ruby, Emerald, and Ultimate? If you can crush those, then nothing stands against you. Also, if you get Knights of the Round, which is the most RIDICULOUSLY over powered attack in ANY video game EVER, only the two weapons will be able to pose any real threat. Love it!
