I hope it hooks me in more than Twilight Princess did - which reminds me I still haven't got round to finishing it...

I'm intrigued by Skyward Sword, especially the idea of 1:1 sword controls. I don't understand Nintendo's decision to remove lefty capability though.
it's because lefty are a blight on the human race
in the same way invert player are a blight on our kind (gamers)
(i really should have put more thought into this)
I'm aware you're joking but you have to consider that both kinds of player will form part of your consumer base, you can't afford to just exclude like that.

It looks fantastic and I can tell Nintendo really put a lot of effort into this one. Certainly will make the fans happy, and bring new ones into appreciating the whole game overall. But, I shall not get it ever.

Why? Because I never played a Zelda game. Never played as Link except in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I just never tried out the series period. Sad on my part, but couldn't find a reason to want to play the games after several games of Link came out by the time I found out it was around.
If you've never tried out the series why not start with this one?
To me, I have to start out with the first game or chapter to truly appreciate how it all started. Not a bad idea to try this game out, but I don't own a Wii. However, my brotherly friend is getting this game since he has been a dedicated fan who owns a Wii so I might check with him. But to own it myself... probably won't do so. My money is focused on Skyrim.. yep.
I can definitely understand the need to start from the beginning. It's how I am with most things, but most Legend of Zelda games don't really connect to each other (there are a few exceptions) and if they do it's very, very loose. If you're interested I definitely say check it out. Borrow a Wii from someone. That's what I'm doing. :D

Does anyone know if the Wii Motion Plus is needed for Wii games these days, I haven't gotten a new Wii game in a long time so I never had one, does it make that much of a difference?
Skyward Sword will require it. I went ahead and pre-ordered an edition of the game that comes with a gold Wiimote+ (has a built-in Motion Plus). I needed a new Wiimote anyway, as I've had mine for five or six years now and they are kind of struggling. It was a cheaper option than buying the game and a new Wiimote separately.

I hope this doesn't cause Hype Backlash.

It will, but I can hope.
Eh, people already generally think low of Nintendo on this site. I'm sure we'll hear the same old arguments when Skyward Sword does come out. I'll be too busy having fun with the game to care.

It's averaging a 98 so far on metacritic. [http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii/the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword/critic-reviews] I was already planning on buying it and this just tells me I made a good choice. Now I just need a Wii Remote Plus.

Its a GameInformer review...so its probably like a 8-9 with their broken ass review system...
Well its about the same as IGN and they get paid for "certain reviews" so they get money for "pushing certain games" (ex: COD). But chances are it is going to be pretty good. Until this game, i'd beaten every console zelda game, from the original NES game to twilight princess for gamecube. I haven't been disappointed by a Zelda game yet, and nintendo tends to maintain quality in their flagship titles (minus the Metroid: Other M thing).

I wouldnt doubt a rating on a Legend of Zelda game....GI just has a broken ass rating system and dont let the asshole behind the counter of Rapestop tell you any other way...also...for other game reviews...either watch a video on youtube/demo/or ZP!

Sweet, they nailed 1:1 motion controls! Win!
Dear gods, that's what I was afraid of. Everyone else on the Wii caught the clue years ago, but Nintendo is still pushing that stupid crap? I love Zelda. I've always loved Zelda (except for MM and those crappy Oracles games by Capcom), but I want to play Zelda, not flail around like an epileptic every time I want to swing the damn sword.

I made the mistake of buying TP on the Wii instead of the Gamecube and it was 4 years before I beat it, because of that stupid mechanic. Maybe I'll just give this one a pass, after all.

Edit: Nope. I definitely will be letting this one pass, since I don't have a Plus wiimote.

Frankly, I don't really care how well it ranks. I've lost interest in the franchise (with the sole exception of the in-progress "Hyrule Total War" mod) and I just don't like the art design of Skyward Sword. If I get interested in it in any regard, I'll just watch someone's playthrough on Youtube until my curiosity is slaked.

Game Informer has a review system that consists of throwing darts at a wall that only has the numbers eight through ten printed on it. And since Game Informer's staff is comprised of several stroke victims that were born with half of their brain missing, I wouldn't really take this review to heart without eating an entire tower of salt.
I'm intrigued. I want to know you're reasoning behind this, unless you're trolling.

OT: Well, I would be picking it anyway up as long as it wasn't a massive failure. And if I have money.

Damn. That's cold.
Indeed. They gave some Cooking Mama game for the Wii a 4. This guy really thinks that their reviews are that unbalanced? They also gave Magicka a 6, which I agree with. Reviews are meant to help you make a refined choice of whether or not you should buy a game. However, they are not law that states "This game is bad. You will not like it." This may only sometimes be the case, but it does not mean that you should take every review literally.

OT: I've never played a Zelda game. I'll let that sink in. Anyway, I might buy it to dust off my poor Wii, which is just sitting in the family room, or if I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket. I do know some of the Zelda lore, so it's not like I would be missing a whole lot of information if S-ward was my first one.

Pre-ordered. Inexorably excited. Zelda has always been a beacon of incredibly solid and compelling gameplay for me, and my first Zelda was Twilight Princess. . .

Damn. That's true.

Seriously....I hate their reviews....Its a MEH game it gets a 7! The game has to be really bad and come with a cat urine sprayer and ballpuncher controller for it to recieve a score lower then 7.
I actually agree with you on that. Some of the games they give a 10 to I just don't understand..

For instance, God of "Press X to live" War 3 got a 10. That game was beyond boring, involved three locations and a very lackluster gameplay that was pretty much cut and paste from the previous two uninteresting titles.

Yet they had the gall to say that it was filled with innovative gameplay that sets the bar high for future games.

Really?

Ugh. I hate GI's reviews...

I'm less concerned about GI's review, and more interested in Edge's review, which was also a 10/10. To my understanding, Edge is pretty harsh with their reviews.

Plus, this game sets up the story for the rest of the series, and appears to have a much bigger emphasis on characterization. Plus, it's obvious the game will have a lot of "Player Punch" moments. That's always a good thing, gets you more invested into the story when you feel hurt by what happens to the characters.

Link saves princess from Ganon. There's a sword who's also a chick or something. You fight bosses at the end of dungeons using weapons acquired from said dungeon. Sigh...

Zelda is cool and all and the art direction looks nice for a Wii game, but great cthulhu I am sick and tired of the Zelda formula. Don't get me wrong I loved Majora's Mask, Link to the Past and Phantom Hourglass, but it just starts to lose its appeal over the years.

Give me a game where I'm Linebeck or Ganon or ANYONE ELSE and we'll talk.

I preordered this back in September. This and Arkham City were the only game releases this fall that I cared about. Zelda is my favorite game franchises. I am excited, and I will be excited no matter what reviews say.

Nintendo nailed 1:1 sword fighting before another developer nailed 1:1 lightsaber fighting?

It's not needed for most wii games. But stuff like this game, Wii Sports Resort and a few other games do need it. You will need it for skyward sword, but you can easily find a bundle with the game and a motionplus for only about £10 over than just the game. When motion plus is used well, it is so good. The new zelda, you have to put precision into your sword swings, waggling wont get you anywhere.
