Doomsday money betting logic time: I'd bet my money on no doomsday. I mean, I can't really lose there. I lose bet, I don't have time to worry about loss of money. If I win, I get to live with money.
I bet you five Internets that you can't find a single betting shop that will let you place that bet, for exactly the reason you have described. So that kind of skewers your so-called logic. :p

This may have prematurely released a bubble.
Or they could've released the pressure, preventing one from forming for another several hundred thousand years or whatever.

In any case, I tire of Doomsday theories.

This theory actually looks pretty reasonable.

Also, You guys do remember what happened at the end of the 'boy who cried wolf' story, right?

If it happens it happens. Lets just hope that the next evolution of Humans are smarter than this one.

No. It's not that kind of bubble.

The methane is stored as a solid, with a very high vapor pressure.

"Letting some of the gas out" doesn't "relieve the pressure", it just makes more room for more methane to evaporate out of the solid.

Jesus christ, now I've got to make another damned doomsday box for this particular scenario.

There is always some idiot who wants to make a bet on this. And it's only good for the betting shop, if they take bets about it.

Ugh.

Can't the nutjobs at least wait until the currently popular crazy doomsday theory fails to pan out before throwing another one at us?

Wasn't this EXACT SAME THING happening in the arctic circle about, oh, 6 months back?

Exactly. This always happens. When they are completely legit, I'll worry.

Off Topic: Wait, the Large Hadron Collider could create a "World-Engulfing" black hole and dispose of the "World-Ending" methane bubble! SCIENCE!

Yes, I was rethinking this last night and realised, a shop might accept the bet, but the amount they would pay out in the event of no doomsday would be less than the money that you placed on the bet, so it would really be they who are screwing you. And if, as you say, some idiot always wants to make the opposite bet, then they are truly the idiot.

Now the world is full of idiots. All I have to do is convince them that something like this is a good idea. Announcing that the world will end with something that may seem like convincing evidence and saying that it's a good idea to bet on the world ending because it is more likely for you to survive if you get the cash and buy yourself a place in a bunker. Or some other stupid explenation. Someone always falls for it.
