I'm not going to say anything about the quality of the character (frankly, I didn't care about the original Dante at all, so...) or the game.

That said, I will say that the OP is wrong, and this is the same Dante redesigned/rebooted or what have you. I'm completely 100% sure on this. Willing to bet $1000 sure.

Going from the trailer alone and combining that with OP thinking, we could also say, "It only says DMC at the end! It probably doesn't even mean Devil May Cry. It's probably Don't Make Cake, the reboot of Portal." But it's not. It's Devil May Cry, and it's Dante.

Thats just twisting my logic. Its quite obviously a devil may cry game... I think ive backed up my theory quite well. Can you back up the fact that youre 100% sure its the original Dante? No you cant. Capcom haven't confirmed it. Hence why these are all theories.
Can you back up the fact that you're 100% sure it's Devil May Cry?
*sigh* take this as you will... but i'm not even going to bother. Youre detracting from the point of this.

It's probably a prequel or some other universe... I haven't played the DMC games so I don't know. Notice how it didn't say Devil May Cry? It said DMC which means it could pull something out of it's pocket you weren't expecting.

'J' you can't go devil's advocate so you can win the argument. You're saying it is Devil May Cry and the original Dante and later on you're saying are you sure it's Devil May Cry? I see where you're argument is coming from "You can't say it's not Devil May Cry without proving it is"

Right now, any theory is just as correct as each other.

The series is being rebooted, how can you have the son of the main character as the protagonist in a reboot? That....doesn't seem very likely.

People just don't like the main character because he looks TOO different. You can't even tell that they're the same person. It'd be like if Paramount Pictures went with the Black Actor to play Peter Parker in the Spider Man reboot.

Personally, I don't like this new Dante because he looks like an fucking twig and I'm suppose to expect this guy to fight monsters? He looks like one of those guys who hangs around behind the school smoking pot.
Again.. I'm waiting for a source that specifies this is a reboot...

Happy now?

No? lol

It says purportedly reported as a reboot... as in its a assumed its a reboot. Once again thats not Capcom explicitly saying its a reboot is it?
*Sigh* What is the fucking point of arguing with you? If people were assuming that it was a reboot, but it wasn't Ninja Theory or Capcom would come out and say "No no, it's a sequel." or "No, it's not Dante" or all of that crap. They wouldn't leave the world guessing like that. There is nothing worse then being left in the dark.

If people already assume it's a reboot and are correct, then there isn't really any reason to give an announcement. Look at Valve's E3 announcement, people were assuming that it was an Episode 3 thing, they were wrong and Valve told them flat out.

On an off-topic note, Wikipedia has even listed DmC as a Reboot. They don't add things or allow things to be edited without a trustworthy refrence, so I would assume it's safe to say that, "Yes, it is a Reboot." Please, enough with the denial. You have nothing to back up your theory and the only you're doing now is completely ignoring anything we say.
No I'm ignoring what YOU say. The point of this thread was to be about alternate theories, not jumping on the bandwagon. Why shouldnt I question what evryone thinks? Why shouldnt I question an ambiguos trailer? Why should a dev spoon feed you all the information about a game straight away? You cite examples where devs do but I could cite examples where they dont. Look at Dragon Age 2, there are loads of ideas aboiut who the main character is in realation to the wider world and Bioware are keeping their cards close to their chest on his whole identity. And ffs the trailors only been around a short time, if it is Capcoms intention to create speculation theyre not going to dispell it after a fucking week are they?
They will if they will lose money over it. There are a lot of people who are on the fence about the game just based on the idea of this being the new Dante. In the video game industry, a lot of the sales pass on by word of mouth. I say game A is really good, but game B is really bad. Which will you buy?

The developers aim is to get as many sales on Opening day as possible. Anything afterward will be by word of mouth. If you make a bad triple A game and you only sell a few thousand copies, do you think those who disliked your game will turn to their friends and recommend it? Especially if they're big DMC fans.

What you're doing isn't questioning what everyone else is thinking. It's denial. We have evidence to back our arguments up, granted it isn't much, but it is more then you have to support yours. But when Kotaku and Game Informer and even the Escapist itself says "It's probably a Reboot." then you don't think Capcom may be worried that people may have the wrong idea of the plot or of the direction of the game? There is not releasing a lot of info at once and leaving room for speculation by the fanbase and then there is leaving people with false information.

The latter wouldn't be supported to well and face it, this looks NOTHING like Devil May Cry. If they were to make a sequel to anything, they wouldn't be changing the art design of it, the main character or any major stuff like that.

You don't call ODST a sequel to Halo 3 do you?
Oddly enough Kotaku, Game Informer and the Escapist aren't all knowing entitues theyre actually just made of regular people! Regular people who are required to report on the current status of games from their own perspective, whatever that may be. Just because they say it, it doesnt mean its a fact.

You say they wouldnt change the main character of the series? One word.... NERO.

You say they wouldnt change the art design? The angel inspired demons of DMC4 are a far cry from the bloody marionettes of the first game.

No, you're assuming it's Devil May Cry because it says DMC. Why shouldn't we criticize that when you criticize that we think it's a reboot, because A)His name is Dante. B)He has the same outfit as the "old" Dante. C)The developers have mentioned an interest in going for a more western approach, and D)If it is a Devil May Cry 5, it would have a 5 at the end presumably.

Oh, and to add another point, why would the creator of the original Dante be disappointed in Ninja Theory's design if this wasn't the same Dante, but a different character. Why would he feel hurt if this was a character that wasn't relevant to his original idea?

DMC4 still had the original Dante, just as the presumed villain, and through the second half, you got to PLAY as him!

Were all my points taken separately for different games, they would be irrelevant. But take all together, it's a bit suspicious. And why would Kotaku and Escapist say it was a reboot if they weren't sure it was one, otherwise they'd later have to apologize for misleading their readers and giving false information.

Also, read my edited in part at post before.

1) Nero sees Dante as the Antagonist. Dante is still in the game, his motives have not change and he plays a major role in the game. The game keeps Dante as a main character.

2) That's a different enemy. Different games often have different enemies. Doom had flaming skull enemies known as Lost souls. Doom 3, also had a lost soul enemy, they share similarites, but they look nothing alike. Still, they share the same origin, the developers just decided on a different look given the technology they had in the early 00s. When I said artwork, I was more or less referring to the whole world they created.

3) Yes, they are not all knowing entities. But they are in fact rather big names in gaming news and are widely read. A lot of people read Kotaku, so what Kotaku says has a big affect on these people. If they have false information and it impacts sales negatively, do you think Capcom would let it slide?

I've never really been a fan of Devil May Cry, but I say let them mix it up a bit. We all complain about there being no new ideas in games, but when a series tries to go in a new direction, people *****. Did I ***** when Bioshock was not in Rapture anymore? No, because its in the sky now, and I thought it was nice to get a change in scenery.

Oh well, people just don't like change. I don't think he looks THAT bad. Don't know what's up with that necklace or the hair, but he looks pretty cool.

Dante original or new Dante, whatever the character looks fine. If the game is fun to play does it really matter what the character looks like? Again I ask, are you people this damn shallow?

I don?t play DMC, so I know nothing about the games or the characters. But, speaking to the nature of the OP, it makes sense to assume that this is the same Dante. Would it be cool if it were a child named after the hero, or maybe his namesake? Yes. Is it a likely scenario? No.

You're going to be looking at this guy and controlling him for anywhere up to 7-10 hours. If you were stuck on an island with someone for the rest of your life, would you pick a swimsuit model or a hobo? The personality of the character doesn't have to change, but when you have control on a way to make them look anyway you want, you'd aim to make them appeal to people. Not to mention that appearence can lead to jumps on how the character will act.

Just looking at Kratos and you can draw from his expression, his scars and his large blades, you can draw that he is a rather angry and brutal person. What do you think people can infer from looking at Dante?

I recall a quote from the official play station magazine where it described the main Character of the force unleashed that he looked like someone from a boy band. I think this adequately describes the new dante too. well if it is infact him.

I've only just seen the trailer so I haven't done much research into it, but has it actually been confirmed by Capcom or the developer that this is THE Dante? My first thoughts when I watched it was that he was some relation of Dante's named for him. Most likely his son, or Nero's son. Soo I guess my question is, is there anyone else who actually thought outside the box when they saw it or just took it at face value like everyone seems to have? It's just a name after all....
Well, Occam's Razor states that the simplest answer is usually the right one. So yeah, there's probably a reason why all these fanboys are goin' off the chain. I don't care personally, but I still find it funny, myself.

They are trying to de anime/jrock the series which is silly because the theme worked its just level design, core mechanics and story need work...of coarse thats why we have not seen an Onimusha or Mega man on the consoles Capcom is very bad at refining a game for smoother 3rdPerson play control, Hell even Konami had to clone god of war for the CV series which only needed work on level design, core mechanics and story.... I think they are just unable to create solid 3rd person action games of games they have done a ton of 2D work with.

DMC would benefit from a proper behind the cam 3rd person view this would work well if level design is updated and scaled up a tad, then use that basic game setup to build a foundation for a "metroid prime" like Mega man game. IE a 3rdperson/1stperson with a simple auto lock button(which by default would be used to change target otherwise it would be off and you have to manually aim).It can be done but between over simplification and the inability to make a decent game for the series on the console, I dunno I doubt they will put 110% into it they always seem to put about 60% into it at best....
