16x = -17 |:16
x = -17/16

Correct me if I'm wrong.
same thing I got but my friend keeps saying it's wrong. She says it's 1.something.(her words not mine)

Math isn't really my strongest subject, but I'll give it a go

16x+3 = -14

16x = -14-3

16x = -17

x = -17/16

x = -1.0625

Unless you're trying to find X and not x, then I'm not sure.

Math makes my thinker box hurt

Well unless you're missing a negative sign somewhere or modulus is involved I don't really see how it can be a positive number...

You're both right. -17/16=-1.0625

Well yeah, -17/16 will be 1. something. Or -1. something actually.

16x+3 = -14 <=>
16x = -14-3 = -17 <=>
x= -17/16 = -1.0625

16x+3 = -14

First ye take the 3 and switch it over and make it a negative number.

16x= -14-3

Then combine the like terms on that side.

16x=-17

Divide -17 by the co-efficient of X.

x=-17/16

That is your answer. If you want to be technical (or to get your friend to shut up) the answer is

x= -1.0625

She be trolling. Tell her that it's equal to 2 and ask her to disprove you with her workings. :)

Assuming your friend said -1.0625, both of you are correct. I don't see how you could be mistaken, unless the question specified a decimal answer instead of a fractional answer or vice versa.

How about a simultaneous equation:

4x + 7y = 136
10x + 15y = 330

Find x and y. (There may or may not be more than one correct answer)

How about checking her equations? Because if she claims it's a positive number there has to be something wrong. Unless she solved for -x, but that would be a bit strange.

X is a variable, indicating an unknown numerical quantity, range, or expression.
HAHAHA!! but seriously...
