It's awesome.
A very loud, very wrong minority complained, and so it got cut from 2.

The driving segments can be a little annoying, but not bad enough to skip mass effect for. People tend to whine and exaggerate don't they? I say, give it a go and decide for yourself.

I didn't think they were that bad. I didn't love them, but they weren't unbearable.
It just had some physics bugs, and aiming the gun can be frustrating. But again, it's not that bad.

I actually enjoyed the Mako. Fine, it wasn't exactly realistic in terms of driving physics, but driving around/jumping to avoid rockets while blasting away with the main gun did have a lot of appeal to me.

Besides, the planet scanning and probing was infinitely more tedious and boring than driving a bouncy tank can ever be.

P.S.

I played it on PC, I have no idea how the Mako handles on the 360...

Use a 360 controller and its fine. Its still a pain in the ass but is still like 50,000x better than #2 fucking planet scanning bullshit.
100% agree. I'd take Mako planet exploring over that planet scanning crap any day.
As others said it's not a game killer just don't go for the finding every heavy metal and gasses to get a mere entry in the journal.

I played it on 360 and it took me awhile to figure out which buttons did the machine guns and the main cannon. That sure helped with the thresher maws. Not that it's a big deal, I think they were only on 4 planets out the hundreds you can visit? I think you could also click down on one of the sticks to get a zoom view. My friend playing on pc didn't know if he could do that.

My most vivid memory of me1 is stopping the Mako on a ledge and watching this big blue sun in the sky. I also remember needing either Tali or Liara to do repairs or shield strength. Medigel - good times.

I'd recommend the 360 version. I heard opening locks makes you play this hard ass moving labyrinth mini game but the 360 version is an easy lame-o simon says button mash game.

I enjoyed them, the vehicle handled like a turd with six square wheels but I enjoyed the exploration.

I had no problems with it - the Mako was apparently filled with helium, but it was very difficult to overturn, and had a great deal of traction.

The Mako was fine. There was absolutely nothing wrong with how it handled. Oh, sorry, its bouncy? No shit, its an all terrain vehicle. When have those ever not been bouncy as fuck?

Oh, you can climb 85 degree angles? Why is this considered a bad thing?

They shouldn't have gotten rid of it.

Simply put,

1) Yes it does handle like crap, Although if you treat it like a tank with two treads instead of a normal car you can pull off some really neat moves.

2) The thrusters are only marginally useful outside of combat. IN combat you can goomba stomp foes with a vehicle, it is awesome.

3) Trying to reach some of the artefacts/writings/corpses to loot etc, witch are on the top of a frigging mountain can be an exercise in frustration.

In summary, while the actual Mako isn't THAT bad and can be pretty fun, the level design doesn't help.

I'm playing through Mass Effect for the first time right now. On the mission to find the Asari team member.

Driving it is very, very frustrating.

They are fine I didn't find them too bad at all. The Mako is kind of ridiculous and bouncy but it's not hard. I liked it more than the hammerhead in ME2.

Aside from being slightly boring, they aren't that bad. It's by no means a game breaker, just a somewhat poorly implemented gameplay thing.

for the most part, they are boring but overall not THAT bad. they are definitely the worst part of the game but they dont ruin the game, by any means. the only time it really sucks is with the side missions (particularly the "collect x amount of y" side missions), mainly because those involve driving up a lot of mountains and the driving physics are kid of...odd. but as someone who doesnt usually like bioware games and doesnt need much reason to rip them apart, the driving did not prevent me from playing through the game twice

Initially, the Mako's unwieldy and you'll feel like a drunk driver, but you get used to it. The real issue is constantly driving around in a bunch of fields for basically every sidequest (and main quest), as it gets horribly repetitive.

It's easy enough. If you've had any experiences with the vehicles in Halo (take your pick on which one) then it's about on that level. A bit easier when you factor in that in Halo you're almost always being attacked while driving. In Mass Effect you can park far enough away from many enemies and rain hellfire down on them (in the side-areas anyway).

Other than that, I'd say the good aspects of ME1 far outweigh the bad aspects. Go for it!

I think they're great. The side mission are optional. If you don't want to do them (I would recommend doing them, except the resource gathering task) don't do them. The vehicle parts of the main missions are a lot of fun.

In my opinion they were decent, they weren't the best part of the game and it was definitely clunky, but people are making a bit of a fuss about it. I love the tank in Mass Effect 2 better, though it's a bit slow.
