*Cough* Ahem. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Those are proper vampires!
This, those were, in fact, how i view vampires. Bloodlines is a videogame to anyone who doesn't know, and it is based on the Pen and Paper role playing game Vampire: The Masquerade, which is also awesome.

I agree with you completely except for the sunlight trait some times you need a storyline that is not bound by time, though there should (and thats a very lenient "should") a weakness that servers as an/a equivalent/substitute.

-- On a side note i like my vampires Anime/Manga style.

The Joss Whedon interpretation of traditional vampires are my favorite
Agreed with this. Buffy/Angel vampires are my favourite. They fit perfectly in the modern society, but they don't lack any of the mythological/folklore background.

I also like Underworld vampires (and werewolves too).

I like my monsters ugly. It makes them more plausible. Vampires that don't look slightly deformed when they do their vampire stuff are kinda missing the point of vampirism.

I wouldn't call them anymore proper than other versions of vampires but I was very, VERY fond of how the system worked and the rules they lived by.

Disclaimer: The above does not exclude Twilight from mockery. It feels like emo fairies. I tend to only accept vampires as a powerful curse of hellish boon.

Staked, with the wood of an aspen tree, in full sunlight. Also, the vampire's name is Cullen.

My only must have rules are death by sunlight, fangs and drink blood (preferably human, though I'll tolerate when they feed on animals).
The first two Blade movies did it pretty well for me (though protection via suncream was a little ridiculous). I also really like the bit about inviting them inside your home, which Let the Right One In handled really well. In fact Let the Right One In handled everything really well, which is why it's my favourite film.

A toss up really for me. Legacy of Kain vampires have a special place in my mind, but they were kinda set up to mostly be beastlike, aside from Kain and Raziel.

I think the Vampire: The Masquerade vamps are probably my favorite. Very diverse.

I also like Hellsing's Alucard, but he really cannot be killed or even stopped.
Ooooooh, my favorite storyline. Kain. I also loved how the whole story twisted out and where the curse came from. /won't give spoilers just in case.

I like the True Blood vamps. Garlic slightly irritates them, sunlight hurts not (not ONLY sunlight, but going out from a fully light proof room during the day - in the first season, a vampire named Bill leaves his underground lair to try and save his girlfriend, Sookie, but begins to burn as soon as he goes into his hallway), they can only be killed by staking (not bloody sparkling in Italy), they can "glamour" (hypnotise), some can levitate, some can fly, some can turn into a bat...

I think it's great that not EVERY vamp in the series has EVERY ability; it's just luck. Plus, most of them are freaking badass. Yes, they're sexy, yes, you want to bang them...but you do NOT want to get on their bad side.
I don't mind when authors/writers/directors mess with the vampire lore a bit, make it their own, but when somebody like Stephanie Meyer comes along and makes them into wussbags...well, people are going to have something to say. She can't even write well. THAT'S what annoys people; she's highly overrated, as is the Twilight franchise.

At least other vampire stories go into the...benefits AND the curses of being a vamp, not just Meyer's "nothing-is-bloody-bad-about-being-a-vampire" bullcrap.

Sorry, bit of a rant there!

Oh, and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was freaking awesome too.

I really like the Blade ( first movie, I haven't read the comics)style vampires, specifically Deacon Frost and his crew/style. 1. They burn up in sunlight. 2. They drink human blood (Frost even calls humans food and cattle) 3. They generally enjoy being vampires. 4. They are super strong and fast.
And I like the Vampires from the John Steakly novel Vampire$, which are very similar to the Blade style vampires. The Main differences are 1. Blessed religious symbols and Churches hurt them. 2. They can't be seen in mirrors or on video cameras. 3. A stake through the heart causes them great pain and, if kept on the stake (in the book, the stake are the size of a baseball bat) long enough, it will kill them

Natural selection killed off all vampires that couldn't handle the sun. Only the ones that developed a gene to resist the UV rays are left.
but vampires aren't born, they're made. how would that work either way, if they're supposed to be dead... dead cells can't reproduce, thus hampering with evolution. xD

The only good vampire is a Dracula-esque vampire. I'm talking the whole shibang. Photophobic, no reflection and the ability to shift into a bat. Real vampires are also supposed to be homosexual (possibly) necrophiles who can create legions of ghouls by bitting a member of the same sex.

For whatever reason, I find female vampires (as they are portrayed in movies, not real life vampires) Very hot. But I guess that it's the way they're designed...
But I also like dark girls who are bloodthirsty (see LRR) and I don't really like the sun either. The only thing keeping me from wanting to be a vampire is that eternal life seems very boring. And you have to kill people to get nurishment. And I like people... well... No I don't, but I feel like killing them is a bit excessive.

As for my thoughts on what makes a real vampire: Dies in the sun, needs to drink human blood, bat-related, super strength (too a point) and being able to fly. (being as a bat or not.) and
they

Vampire the Masquerade and Vampire Dark Ages/Victorian covers it all in a nice neat little package

Different groups get different abilities. Plus the whole holy artifact (crosses, etc) they only work if the weilder has actual faith behind it and at most may make the vamp run. Also they older the vampire gets the more immune he is to holy artifacts and more powerful but at a cost of losing their humanity and human-like features for something more fearsome.
