So I bought a Wii U...

I bought a Wii U a few days ago. Originally I was looking for it refurbished, but a woman at my gamestop convinced me that it was a good idea to buy one new so I can get Nintendo's warranty in case something would happen to the gamepad, rendering the system pretty much useless.

Anyway, I got three games with it and a Wii U pro controller.

I bought ZombiU out of curiosity, Mario Kart 8 to play with friends, and Super Mario Brothers U that came with my system.

ZombiU surprised me. I like it. It's not perfect, but it's alright. Too bad Ubisoft decided to be entirely about first time sales and there's no sequel planned. A sequel done better would have actually been great.

Mario Kart 8 so far has been predictably a blast, friends or alone. The online aspect is going to keep me coming back now and again for quite some time.

Don't much care for Super Mario Bros U. I've played it before on NES, SNES, DS, 3DS, etc. And the fact that I can't "properly" play co op with my brother with the WiiU gamepad is absurd, unless I'm seriously missing how.

Other than that I bought Wind Waker HD and now I'm stuck.

Now what?

I'll probably buy Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 1 and 2, but after that I have no plans. There's nothing interesting coming out anytime soon. There's maybe a couple Wii games that I'll buy after my grandmother gives me that Wii she never uses and I can have the controllers, but otherwise I feel a bit cheated out of $300-400.

Monster Hunter looks pretty cool I guess. But everything else is platformers and...Skylanders? No.

I chose a WiiU over a PS4 because I figured I already got next gen gaming covered with my PC, but I almost wish I reconsidered. Maybe I'm being pessimistic.

I guess I'm asking for some recommendations? No platformers or puzzle games though. And I don't need anything from the current selection from the Virtual Console.

Once I finish Wind Waker, and ZombiU, I pretty much just have a black box until something comes out.

If you like Platinum games, there is the Wonderful 101. I haven't played it yet but I have heard some great things about it. At the moment though, it is limited and is only getting more hype because of the games that will be coming out within the next year. It's also pretty limiting with the two genres you don't want mentioned being the majority of the big games on the console. There is Lego City Undercover, which is a Lego GTA basically and I've heard good things about that. Those are the only two I can think of that are currently out and fit what you want.

Well, I do think Nintendo has a lot of really solid platformers that aren't Mario, but I suppose if you're really against the genre then I'll put a cap on my love for Kirby and Donkey Kong.

But still, if you are willing to look into Wii games, then there are quite a few of those worth owning. Though they do require Wii-compatible controllers to play. The Metroid Prime Trilogy is a pretty good start; it does technically have platforming but it's centrally an action-adventure game, presented in a first-person format. It does away with the twitch-aiming that a lot of console shooters rely on by having a lock-on function, and at least the first game in the trilogy really has some of the most solid world-building I've seen. Though it does use the Wiimote motion controls, which can take a bit of getting used to when you first start playing.

To continue on with Wii games, if you're into JRPGs then it could be worth checking out Xenoblade: Chronicles and/or Pandora's Tower. Xenoblade plays very similarly to Final Fantasy XII or Dragon Age: Origins, but with more player involvement in melee combat, and it's got a nice big open world (with an admittedly massive glut of mostly-pointless side-quests, as they usually do). Pandora's Tower is more of a solo action-RPG, and is certainly the weirder of the two games, both in world design and plot. But it's a really interesting game all the same.

Then of course there's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which I'm not sure I need to describe by now? I'm not really big on fighting games and I'm terrible at them anyway, but I still get a lot of fun out of Smash Bros.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is pretty good, too, though it's worth bearing in mind that it's very much a niche product. It doesn't have a lot in the way of story and it does have a lot in the way of grind, so if you're not a person who loves to kill monsters for the sake of incremental progression, it might not be for you.

Wonderful 101 might be worth looking into, especially if you're interested in Bayonetta. It's cheesy, insane, over-the-top, and all of that other good stuff which everyone who decries "grittiness" in gaming seems to want. It's an action game, but because its central mechanic is the fact that you're using a whole bunch of little guys to combine together into bigger weapons, some of the mechanics do seem like they can be a bit fidgety and it's almost certainly another "easy to pick up, impossible to master" sort of game. But if you're the type of person who gets a sense of satisfaction out of mastering things, there you go. Also if you like pure ridiculous nonsense, it has it in spades. Saying that again because it's impossible to overstate how crazy Platinum games tend to be.

Pikmin 3 could be something you check out, as well. It's something of a strategy game, and it's another really odd title. I haven't played much of it myself yet, but it's cute and horrifying at the same time and if it's continuing the legacy of the previous titles in any way, then it's yet another very unique game which might be worth it for the variety it provides you alone.

Uh, I think that's all I've got, yeah. At least off the top of my head at the moment.

There's Resident Evil Revelations and Deus Ex Human Revolution, if you're interested in last gen multiplats with gamepad compatibility.

I like having the inventory there, Deus Ex is the director's cut as well.

Are you sure about the VC? Earthbound and Breath of Fire II are worth it if you're into JRPGs. Aside from VC titles there are some good eShop games such as Shovel Knight, the upcoming Steamworld Dig and, Little Inferno...but you've probably got those since you primarily game on PC...

Anyway, Pikmin 3 is pretty fun if you give it a chance and I thought it was the best looking game on the Wii U before Mario Kart 8 released. Deus Ex: Human Revolution DX is a good pick on the Wii U as well if you haven't already beaten it five different ways on the PC. Wonderful 101 is like Pikmin only more action-packed...though to be honest I liked Pikmin 3 more. Monster Hunter 3 U pretty solid. Each hunt can be harrowing and character progression is different than in actual JRPGs, where it's all about what kind of weapons, armor and, equipment you have. The more and, the larger things you kill the better stuff you get and, the monsters you hunt can be downright
gargantuan.

SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT ZOMBIU! It isn't perfect but it was a lot better than people gave it credit for. Maybe if a million people buy a $20 copy Ubisoft will...no, they won't make a sequel...fuckers. Personally, I'm playing Deus Ex: HR-DX on my U as I wait for Smash and, Splatoon to launch.

Pikmin 3's a good choice. Wonderful 101's great if like action games.

Monster Hunter 3U is really good, but it requires a lot of play time to figure out if you even like the game. Honestly, it could be a bit less grindy but that's just me.

OP, I know you said no platformers but your missing out on Shovel Knight.

Pikmin 3 is a good choice, as is Super Mario 3D World (the 3D Games are much better than the 2D ones IMO).

I already own most of the games on the virtual console, or just don't have enough of an interest in playing them.

I own Deus Ex: Human Revolution on 2 different systems already, the one on PC already being the Director's Cut :p

And yeah, ZombiU took me by surprise. While it is a lot more linear than I would have hoped, there's a few really solid and unique ideas in there, and zombies actually feel like a threat unlike any other zombie games. From my understanding, the game is also pretty long, 15-20 hours depending on play style. That's respectable enough for a slightly linear FPS horror game.

I don't know, I guess the Wii support will have to suffice until more games come out. I was just handed over two Wiimotes with Wii motion plus yesterday, just got to get a few games, which don't seem too expensive.

Well the first you need to do is get to the WiiU Online Multiplayer usergroup on this site :D

Not any eshop titles?
Well I just got Assassins Creed IV for 15? from there :p
You should go there once a week to cehck for the sales, there are usually at least a few interesting ones.

You have Wii?
If you don't, then also announce that so I can give you a few good games from that generation to try out.

For the WiiU which are not platform or puzzle games which might interest you:
The Batman games if you haven't played those on earler gens, same goes for Darksider 2 and then only for Nintnedo Pikmin 3 was fun.
Then if you can get cheaply 4 wii-motes somehow (no nuchuck needed) I'd highly reccomend NintendoLand as a partygame title, it has 3 multiplayer minigames which I have played hundreds of hour with my friends. Always fun and gets a bit competitive too :D (5 player multiplayer, WiiU Gamepad versus the rest of the players).

I have bought them from the Eshop but I guess they are sold as physical copies also are Splinter Cell Blacklist and Deus Ex Human Revolution. Then I have some old GBA RPG games form the eshop and Pokemon Rumble U, also a fun little pokemon arena battle, mainly to play with friends so you can get all the hidden stuff.

Also nice to hear someone else liked ZombiU!
Anything to ask, just quote :)

EDIT:
Read through your other posts and I thought to throw in a few Wii.-titles.
Xenoblade, Last Story and Okami are 3 very good games.
Of course the Zelda titles from that gen should be worth playing and then there's Prince of Persia and Metroid Prime. I also enjoyed Fire Emblem, which we don't have too many of here in the west.

And I totally forgot! I am actually playing Wonderful101 as I am typing this, got me by surprise, a lot better than what I got from the demo. Really enjoying it!

Mario 3D World. I was not impressed with Mario Bros U, but this is a whole new level. It may be one of the best Mario games in recent history. You definitely get a huge game for the price.

Also Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze has been my absolute fav on the console so far.

My first question is. Why did you buy a wiiu? I don't mean this in a condescending way, but you said you feel cheated. Why? Why exactly were you expecting? There is enough information out there to make an informed decision. You didn't exactly buy it day one.

Second. WiiU is backwards compatible. So i would take the time to play some older wii games , assumin you are one of the 7 people who never owned a wii.

Third. You aren't missig anything with the ps4 yet. So no need to feel bad.

On that note -

Y'can get Pikmin 1 and 2 with controls adapted to the Wii remote, 'New Play Control' or something, I got Pikmin 2 with my WiiU but I haven't tried it yet, but I can see it working quite well.

Punch Out (Wii) might be fun if you're interested in that sort of thing.

I always recommend Trauma Center Second Opinion and Trauma Center New Blood, but you probably would look at that as a puzzle game.

There's always Super Smash Bros WiiU coming out as well.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Remember, the Wiiu is pretty much fully backwards compatible with the Wii so any wii games you might want to play will work on it, get Xenoblade. Also get wonderful 101, its utterly fantastic, although it does have a bit of a learning curve and its not good at explaining itself, but once you get the hang of it, its got an amazing aesthetic and sense of style and a kind of gameplay I've never really seen before.

I bought a WiiU last month, there was a pretty amazing deal on at the time, so I got the Wind Waker bundle, then Mario Kart 8 which had a promo attached meaning I got another free game --opted for Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate or whatever-- and I had already picked up ZombiU in advance because I found it new for £7 online.

I've played none of them, so far, because I've just been playing Super Mario 3D World. For someone who spent the last five years ripping Nintendo a new arsehole at every opportunity over their preposterous rehashing of their IP's, I have to give them credit: 3D World is a ton of fun. There is so much variety in the levels, and a decent level of challenge, and I dunno about anyone else, but after spending six years on my PS3, being immersed in misery and realism, the colourful art direction of Mario in HD is a wonderful breath of fresh air.

I've also picked up Xenoblade Chronicles and Skyward Sword --found it cheap, figured why not-- and I plan to pick up Hyrule Warriors next month, but yeah, at the moment, Mario alone is keeping me really happy.

The background story is, my friend REALLY REALLY wanted me to play Mario Kart 8 with him, as well as a couple other games. I was also looking to get one of the three next gen consoles anyway. Having already owned a very capable gaming PC, I didn't really see much of a reason to get a PS4 or Xbox One, so I opted for a WiiU. Having never played any WiiU games otherwise, and only seeing reviews online that praised most WiiU exclusive games, I bought one. I found myself not being as impressed I guess.

I also only have ONE friend with a WiiU so far, so I didn't even have the benefit of having my other gaming friends' opinions (well...there is this one guy, but he's one of those people that praises literally anything Nintendo. We've had debates before. He actively refused any criticism. Seems way too biased to ask.)

I've recently purchased a Wii U and while right now I've only got Mario Kart 8 for it I do have all my other Wii games for use on it along with whats avaliable on the eShop. Playing a legit version of Earthbound and not spending a fortune and without emulating on PC is awesome! Same for the recent release of Mega Man Battle Network since finding the original cart is a pain in the ass nowadays. Looking forward to Hyrule Warriors next month along with Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros. later in the year. Splatoon looks alot of fun too and really, thats what video games are all about, fun!
I do plan to eventually get myself a PS4 but as of right now there's absolutely nothing on it that interests me. The things avaliable for the Wii U right now such as Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Wonderful 101 and their upcoming games are going to be keeping me happy for a good long while until Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out on the PS4.

Hmm, so you've already got Zombi U, Mario Kart 8, and Super Mario Bros U, as well as plans to get Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 (with Bayonetta 1 included). You're not a fan of platformers, and you have no interest in the current line up of virtual console games (outside of any you've already purchased).

When you say virtual console, are you also including eShop games as well? Furthermore, you say you're not a fan of platformers but is there any particular genre you're interested in?

Given what you've informed me of I'll list some reconsiderations, these ones based off of personal experience;

* Wonderful 101 (A great action game by Platinum Games)
* Lego City Undercover (Like a child friendly version of GTA, sometimes a bit simple but has a charming world and fun locations)
* Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (Even if you've played the original Wind Waker on the Gamecube, I really do believe it's usage of the Wii U Gamepad and integration of Miiverse improves the experience in subtle but effective ways).
* Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed (An amazing racing game, far better than any of the recent Mario Kart offerings in my opinion, and feels great to play with the Wii U gamepad)
* Tank! Tank! Tank! (The game can be quite repetitive but the single player mode is lengthy and it is an absolute joy to play with friends)
* Nintendo Land (Much like Tank! Tank! Tank! but not suffering as much from repetition given there is more variation in the single player aspects. Also a great game to play with friends).
* Wii Fit U (Perhaps a stretch but this is a surprisingly enjoyable game with a lot of mini games and generally hilarious to do with friends)

The following are ones I've heard good things about;
* Pikmin 3 (A really good game from what I've heard, and although short, now has DLC to expand the experience for an affordable price, I believe some of it even being free)
* Wii Party U (My only case for this was watching the Game Grumps play it, in which case it was absolutely hilarious, another game best experienced with friends)
* Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (It looks fun, and is one of the few multi-platform Wii U games I'm aware of in which didn't skip out on DLC or additional features for the Wii U)
* Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate (The 4th version isn't set for console releases so this game should remain supported online for a long time to come, and thus it offers the full extent of what I've heard is an amazing experience)
* Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition (From what I hear, the definitive version of this game and if you happen to like fighters, this seems a good one to go for)
* One Piece Unlimited World Red (Likely a good game to go for if you enjoy the series, and if not, still looks like a fun and colourful action adventure game).

Finally, the following are upcoming games for the Wii U you might be interested in:
* Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Technically a platformer, and it did spin-off from a platformer, though I see it more so by it's other genre definition of Puzzle and perhaps you may enjoy the Puzzle experience it offers)
* Devil's Third (A combination of First Person Shooter and Hack-and-Slash, an M rated Wii U exclusive that appears to offer an interesting and smooth blend of the two genres)
* Super Smash Bros for Wii U (It's Super Smash Bros, pretty much guaranteed fun, particularly with friends).

I'm hoping this will all help. Given what information you've provided, this is all I could offer in terms of recommendations, but I feel this a pretty varied and decently sized list which I hope will be enough.
