Yeah so.. For this generation I decided to move away from consoles and instead invest in a desktop. (This is mostly thanks to the wonderful amount of space simulators that have been announced and my laptop really won't do anymore. Even if it is pretty strong for a laptop)

So my problem is... I don't own a desktop at the moment, and I am nervous about assembling one. Don't get me wrong, I am pretty technical actually, but to really build one from scratch without any experience? I don't want to risk it. I think I will feel more secure in making a one time investment in a 'pre-essembled desktop' and then upgrade it in the future... To you know... Make sure it will actually work.

Anyway I've been trying to read up on building PCs and increase my knowledge... But everytime that I start looking for shops I just get overwelmed by the ammount of dealers. I've been trying to make a list of good dealers but all that I ended up with was a general idea...

I think my preference goes to a non-brand shop that essembles a pc for me.. They often seem cheaper for more pow.. Plus I figure their PCs will be easier to upgrade on my own later on.

Anyway I was hoping you could all share some tips with a greenhorn like me. :) (Be it good computer dealers, a nice starter setup or any interesting story or experience you would like to share... Websites where I could find useful information are welcome too. Right now I'm learning mostly from logicalincrements )

Thanks y'all.

Logical increments is a good way to start, this advice section is also always helpful. I have some useful links as well As for the vendors, they are region specific so I'm afraid I can't help you there. Regardless of the vendor make sure you get a system tailored to your own specifications, not a nasty prebuilt one. Finally, we'll need to know your budget :)

These days I build my own. But, when I first got a PC, it was from these folks. They are pretty awesome.

They're located in St Louis, Missouri. So it might be far to ship depending on where you live.

I was lucky enough to work with a programmer who knew what he was doing the time I needed my upgrade. I would definitely agree building your own is the way to go, but if you know someone who has experience give them your pricerange and hopefully they can walk you through it. It is surprisingly easy to build a PC.

I wouldn't recommend going over 1000 or even 800$, don't spend more then 60 on a case, and if you need to save money reuse your hard-drive.
