So I don't like Mass Effect

Mass Effect can be a little....dry at times and it takes a while to hit its stride what with it insisting on building up the characters, sometimes to its detriment. That said, the main story was good fun and it felt nice to not only play a literal space marine who is not a beefcake mountain, but also the option to put the woman front and centre as a rockin' sockin' space hero and watch them grow, learn and make mistakes.

Mass Effect 2 improves itself by tightening up the combat, providing that lovely shot of Drambuie to liven up the full bodied Guiness of the main story.

Also, the scores for both games are pieces of art unto themselves.

I can entirely understand why people think that of the ME series, and to be honest there's more than a little truth to such points of view.

I didn't really get into it a first either. I just played it occasionally, but then it started pulling me in. I would sit there for hours on end just unravelling the story even more and the sequel was even better. The first game gets much better towards the end

I enjoyed both Mass Effect 1 & 2. Immensely. They are both flawed, and the first one suffers from some of the traps and pitfalls of a standard RPG.

However, the reason I enjoyed them was because of the intricate story. The dynamic way in which the plot can move in any direction. I really loved Mass Effect 1 for this. Yes, the plots are ultimately rather linear, but it's about the journey, not the destination.. and the journey fluidly yields to your decisions.

Some people don't even realize the plot is so dynamic. Every now and then I see a post on the net where someone will say "this is who dies in the end of Mass Effect", and they'll call it a spoiler, as if their ending was a fixed ending. Some people are completely unaware, and this leads me to assume it is one of the leading factors in some people "not liking the game". If they can't even take in the scope of the plot, then they surely can't judge it thoroughly.

To each their own though. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Nothing wrong with that.

(On a unrelated side note here.. I'm playing through Baldur's Gate 2 at the moment, and loving it. I don't remember if I ever finished it, but I came close.)

I didnt like either Mass Effects, the AI was too poor to be a challenge or of any help. Gameplay wise I thought it was a poor Gears of War clone. Both games had excellent lore to them though.

Did you ever play on the hardest difficulty? The AI get much more challenging, very quickly. Gameplay wise, it all depends on what kind of character you chose, by the sound of it, you chose soldier.

Nope, Biotic in the first game, singularity trivialized all mobs. Engineer in the second, even more more boring throw drone (might as well be grenades that all classes can use) at mob to flush it out. AI doesn't get more challenging the higher difficulty but instead only have their defensive abilities increased or hit for more damage. No matter the difficulty the enemy is still thwarted by hanging back as far as possible.

One of the games biggest problems in my opinion is that your character development feels mostly complete by midgame. Once I filled out Singularity in ME1, my character didn't ever felt like it got any more powerful.

No real grenade mechanic for a cover based shooter is just ridiculous and makes ME nothing but a shitty Gears of War clone gameplay wise.

Dragon's Age was 9/10 for me, ME1 6/10, ME2 4/10, notice how the more RPG elements that remain my rating stays higher.

I just could not finish it which is really weird for me. I remember landing on this one planet and I had to search these space monkeys for for something and just saying to myself out loud "This stupid" and just quiting so I was just wondering I'm I the only one who had a problem with Mass Effect. I searched the Gaming forums and nothing leaped out at me. So have at it.

I know what you mean, Mass Effect 2 is more of the same, its all boring crap, to me Mass effect always struck me as a RPG that was about 80% boring RPG story and 20% average over the shoulder shooter game. Im not some button mashing boomfest moron who cant enjoy a story just because I havent killed something in the last 10 seconds. Im all for a good story but Mass Effect was so focused on story I quickly lost intrest, Metal Gear Solid 4 had the exact same problem.

As much as I pretend I hate to troll... I thought RPGs were meant to be focused on the story... Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

You might be wrong, my favorite part of RPGs is the character development.

I understand you. I'm currently trying to force myself through a second playthrough where I do all/most sidequests and get some more achievements on the way. All just to import to Mass Effect 2 and see the results of running around the entire galaxy helping kittens down trees =P

But seriously, the first Mass Effect can be really slow and actionless if you do anything else than the main quests. But the eventual Thresher Maw you kill on foot makes it worth it! Or... At least makes it more fun!

Yes, it is correct.

It is a rather pointless usage of however, as it seems as if you are going to go on to defend the game. Just cut the sentence off after "sucks." Also, put "agreed" in the present tense, and put a comma after "one."

I wouldn't be correcting you, but you asked for it.

I didn't quote his entire post. His usage of "however" was perfectly ok.

And putting a comma after "one" would be optional.

OT: Mass Effect's side quests aren't great, but they're also non-essential, so I wouldn't have quit it just because of that.
