basically i have this strange interest in alternative justice systems.

Ergo here is my challenge,

pick one of the following crimes:
Child Abuse
Rape
Murder
Abduction

Now, construct a new method of punishing an offender!

Please bear in mind however that Justice is *NOT* revenge, there is a difference.

I'm curious what people come up with as I'm designing a justice system for an RP.

I imagine that what you're going to get will just be lots and lots of revenge fantasies.

It's your basic eye-for-an-eye mentality. If someone does something bad, then it stands to reason that we should do something bad too! That'll cancel it out somehow...

The ridiculous eye for an eye mentality is too common in our society, the amount of bullshit I hear pouring out peoples' noise-holes in regards to 'justice' is sickening.

Protip. Wishing suffering on a person who's crime was hurting someone, isn't justice, it's hypocritical and barbaric.

All you have to do is look at crime statistics for countries with capital punishment, it isn't a deterrent and it's the ultimate form of irony.


Psychology, criminology, and education are how we learn to deal with criminals. Not violence.

OT: For the sake of the thread, and to keep things reasonably lighthearted, I'd say child abusers get kicked in the groin by a man in a pedobear costume.

I'm with Sonic and Daystar here, this thread is a magnet for revenge fantasies, cue the elaborate torture descriptions which are far worse than the alleged crime committed.

Nevertheless, I'll bite. I'd rule that child abusers shall be magically transformed into a sentient plush toy that cannot move or speak, but only observe the world around them. Why? They wanted to play with little kids, their wish shall be granted ;-)

Actually, Mel Brooks had a funny one in the Roman era of History of the World: Part One when talking about striking a Roman citizen. A particularly-inventive man said "They shove a live cobra up his ass!". That sounds to me like an adequate punishment for Rape.

I'd just like to know some time settings, how advanced species, only humans or different races?

Then I can pick one, imagine what kind of world we're talking about, and make the punishment accordingly.

an alternative justice system? so you mean things like restorative justice? a shake up in the adversarial court system so it is actually about discovering the truth and not just "who has the better arguing lawyer"? no, just different punishments... yippee

edit: for the sake of actually thinking of something, lets go for all criminals, and have the punishment being a clockwork orange form of rehabilitation, but specific to their crime. would be amusing to have that for breaking the speed limit, and then literally unable to speed ever again!

To provide contrast to the "castration", "death", "kicked in the groin" and "Justin Bieber" suggestions (honestly, that last one is just inhumane):

One "punishment" for all crimes - rehabilitation with individual judgements of appropriate form and duration. As a general rule of thumb, keep the offender separated from society for as long as his or her freedom would constitute a risk to other people. Keep the rehabilitation efforts constant and ongoing until the offender is deemed rehabilitated (even after the offender has been deemed a non-risk, if appropriate in that particular case. Note, then, that a person would not necessarily have to be separated from society during the entirety of his or her rehabilitation). Continuous re-evaluation of the progress and state of the offender to determine further action and decide/revise the time-frame of release and cessation of rehabilitatiton efforts.

All done at the discretion of educated professionals with strong employment security, collegial checks and balances and high public transparency.

Serious answer: Let's take cues from Norway for a while. All are to be interned in rehabilitation facilities for varying numbers of years.

Less serious answer: Child Abuse: Abused by child.

OT: A tattoo depending on the crime; murder would grant you the outline of your skull traced with ink. Maybe a "third eye" or equivalent for child abuse? Idk, you get the idea, but mainly for a fantasy setting I suppose.

Uhm...

Generally, castration only means removing the testicles. You can still get an erection after losing your balls.

Also, how will you apply that when it is a woman getting convicted of rape (happens a lot less, but still happens, so you need a plan for those exceptions).
