I was expecting someting better than a fake-thingy on a fake-looking tree. How about the two biggest? Goliath and Giant Huntsman. They would of freaked out more.

You obviously are not familiar with the Sydney Funnel Web [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.118413-The-Sydney-Funnel-Web-Unfair].

That's some scary shit right there.

As for animals I'm actually afraid of, I have to say that I'm not really afraid of any animals really. I will admit though that I won't have anything to do with skunks if I can at all avoid it. A few have lived under the patio of my parents' house for as long as I can remember (I assume a number of different skunks have rotated under as the old ones died), and I've been sprayed before. I will never voluntarily go near a live skunk. If that counts as a fear, then I guess that's it.

Everything else is just sorta meh. I'm justifiably wary of most wild animals, but none of them really creep me out.

I have a hover spider in my house.
It drops from the roof and slowly helicopters to the floor.
Scared the shit out of us when we saw it first. He isn't a small one either.

Here in Australia we used to have the Sydney Funnel Web spider. Past tense in this case meaning it is now called the Funnel Web spider. It has apparently been found up to and including 1000km away from the area it was thought to be confined to. That puts it about 200km south of where I live.

Apparently it has decided it is not feared enough.
Wait. Where was it found? I live south of Brisbane, do I need to start checking my shoes again?
Only just got rid of the bloody red backs.

OT: Not really that scared of spiders unless they end up on my face, which happens at least twice a month more often than I would like.

As far south as Melbourne and as far north as Lismore. Based off migration patterns I estimate 5 years, likely less, until it is in Brisbane proper.

Yay?

Well I'm sure it can't be that bad.

100% Arachnaphobic. I can't stand the athletic bastards, seriously. The only good thing the shits do is kill the bugs that come into your house.

Yes, they're quite fascinating, but up close, I can't stand it, with their awkward shaped legs and gross face...

I love spiders, keep them as pets, follow them in nature and read scientific literature.

I keep other arachnids too, including scorpions.

Even those that can be potentially dangerous, I'm not afraid of them, I don't want to get bitten/stung, or hurt the animal, of course, but that just means I have to be careful.

Aww, that's so cute and lovely! I love breeding spiders that will then carry their babies on their back. Scorpions do that too. SO cute!

Species name or GTFO.

It doesn't look real.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it's fake.
That picture looks like an outdated reconstruction of Megarachne, a species of prehistoric eurypterid that was once thought to be a spider.

EDIT: Turns out I'm right http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Geneve_fg02.jpg

So long as I can see a spider and it isn't on exposed skin (and it isn't the size of a dinner plate), I usually have no problems with them. There's only one insect that really freaks me out, which would be the human bot fly. They won't kill you, but what they will do is nasty enough. They'll wait around where a person is, and catch any mosquitoes that try to go for said person. They'll lay an egg on said mosquito and let the mosquito go, whereupon it resumes its going after said person. Whereupon the warmth of said human body will cause the bot fly larva to hop off of said mosquito and burrow into the person's skin... and I'll leave it at that.

Actually saw a few of those giant fucking bees.
I was taking a nice stroll in a public Imperial garden thing, and I heard this weird, low humming sound. I'm all like, "Noooo...." And then the giant fucking bee, and I was all like, "OMG, SRS" and then I quietly walked away because I heard they liked to chase things. And then there were a few more bees in another part of the park and my head 'asploded slightly.

Still, I'm generally not bothered by insects unless they pose a serious threat to my person. I don't like being touched by them though, and for some reason, that's because of the fact that at their size, they are almost entirely chitin and bizarre, creepy weird organ goo and I find that deeply repulsive.

I wouldn't really say I'm afraid of spiders, but there was this one time...

I was just waking up, feeling dozy and too lazy to deal with the label in my singlet that was scratching me on my waist...until I finally pulled off the blanket and looked down...to see that my singlet had ridden up and that there was a big f*ck-off Avondale spider with huge black legs that were gently pawing at my skin...

I have never, ever gotten out of bed faster. Although I (to my own surprise) didn't scream or anything.

And scorpions freak the holy fucking shit out of me. I can't look at one without feeling all gripey. If i saw one up close, i'd probably piss myself. Being chased by giant radscorpions in the Fallout games is enough to make me literally scream.

As for everything else, i'm pretty much fine, though any spider not from the UK is pretty scary.
You Might like this guy then. African Cave Spider. Kind of a Scorpider? Spidorpion?

There have been specimans found in NSW, Vic, Qld and SA, so time to start periodically burning everything you own, just to be safe...... those bastards can pierce a human (big) toenail with their fangs - I'm pretty sure that's proof right there that god doesn't exist lol

Is that a real spider? The more I look at it the more I suspect it's fake. It's the proportions: the legs seem like they could never support such a huge body the fangs are unwordly large, the eye is all wrong (one giant eye with multiple tinier ones in it? on it's back??) And most of all the abdomen (ass) is way smaller than the thorax (middle part) but the abdomen is normally where nearly all organs are :S
Than again I've seen mother nature produce far weirder things than that.

OT: the one animal i truly fear is ticks. Yeah you heard me.
Unlike a shark or a goliath spider there is a real chance of dealing with them where I live. Getting bitten is super easy: just brush past some grass or whatever. And than they don't bite and leave no the f*ckers latch on! And worst of all they can give you lime's disease: a pretty horrible disease that paralyzes. It can be treated but only if you notice the tick fast enough. But how hard can that be? I mean it's only a tiny black speck somewhere on your body, how could you not immediatly notice it? /sarcasm
Even worse I'm in an increased risk group: biologists. From what I gather half the plant-department here has survived lime's and some show it.

Crustaceans are my outright paralyzing fear, which makes some video games...awkward. You can't really hit it for massive damage while going into hysteria.

And the giant spiders in Everquest...not pleasant. Not when they uncurl from behind a hill.
And for you I have: The Coconut Crab. It's called that because it eats coconuts.

This post was hilarious because I read it in fluttershy's voice.

OT: Don't really have a problem with insects or arachnids probably because I live in Sweden and I'm pretty sure that there arn't any poisonous ones here. If there where I would probably be more scared.

I don't really have a problem with tarantulas to be honest. Spindly ones I'm not too fond of, like Redbacks. Tarantulas have a certain dignity and poise and look pretty cool.

For example.

I am more afraid of Irukandji Jellyfish.

See that little guy in the jar? Well if you touch ANY part of him, 5 minutes to an hour later you get such pain attacks patients are almost invariably hospitalised. On top of that extremely rapid blood pressure jump and nausea. I mean serious pain too. Like people wanting to die rather than continue on with it.

True story, I was once enjoying some quality entertainment on the internet and was using the spare pair of pants I keep by the computer for wiping down afterwards when I noticed a spider crawling where it shouldn't be - scared the bejesus out of me.
