I can't really vouch for whether its a scary game or not, as I tend to watch the supposedly 'scariest horror films of all time/of the year/decade' etc and laugh at them.
You'll probably find BioShock enjoyable though. Perhaps don't play it at night with all the lights off? You'll be alright.
As for the people who said the gunplay was bad? Screw you. How can you possibly hate a game where you can fire a swarm of bees from your wrist to drive someone out of cover, electric shock them so they cant run, then get in close and shotgun their face off? Or crowwbow bolt them to a wall. To be fair, it did fail as an RPG but it was only ever supposed to have RPG 'aspects.' Don't expect to have some massive sandbox to play in like Oblivion or wow.

Got a bit bored half way through. I thought I had reached the end, then another load of crap happened. I couldnt follow what was happening and just lost intrest.

Good game mind, just not for me.

The shooting is a little weak in it, to be honest. Some plasmid/gun combos are far too effective against too many enemies and combat becomes pretty stale. The hacking minigame is also a load of balls. Both of these issues were fixed completely in the sequel consequently.

As for the first, it's still great, because the atmosphere is amazing, exploring rapture and finding out more about it through the logs is amazing, and there's that moment.

The third act is really disappointing though.
Overall, I'd implore you to try the sequel, even if you didn't like the first; it's just an all round better game.

Don't go there for realism, but it is quite creepy, but that's coming from a bit of a horror wuss, oh, and the plot's great in my opinion.

I had fun with it but whenever I try to go through it again I always lose interest at one specific part. Whether this is poor replay value or just me being weird I don't really know.
i completely agree, it was a once through game for me. Maybe something id play in a few years when i get nostalgic or something but i didnt feel the need to play thru and see the otehr ending, i just youtubed it cuz i was curious, still a good game tho.

I played System shock 2 way back, bioshock bored me.

Bioshock is basically System shock 2 but made Steampunkish and easier.

Fun fact: you can actually turn of vita chambers. I hate seeing arguments for something that are based out of ignorance. That being said, the game is pretty damn easy if you don't turn them off :p

I personally enjoyed it. I find it funny that people make fun of the story's originality when basically that means almost every other game ever made has an even more unoriginal story line (especially in regards to setting). EVERY STORY EVER IS BASED OFF OF SOMETHING.

In my opinion, I think you shouldn't have made this thread. You would have enjoyed the game more if you didn't read other people's opinions on it. Forming your own opinion always makes things better (at least for me).

It might be love it or hate it.

It's story is nicely done, but the game mechanics might confuse you after a while in why you really need all the power ups and such.

What you might hate is the walking. That's all.

I'm buying a PS3 next week and I bought Bioshock so when I buy it I already have a game. Tell me about Bioshock. Is it as great as everyone says? I'm kind of a wimp, so it is like actually scary or just something just jumped out of the dark and tried to attack me.
The intro up until you get the pistol is pretty terrifying but then it becomesa really fun shooter...bit easy considering with the right tonics your wrench can replace thor's thunder mallet and with a really well done plot twist with a few jump out scares but not enough for you to be prepared for them ha

Well, let's put it this way, it's scarier than your avarage FPS, not jump-out-of-the-dark scary, more messing-with-your-mind-scary =) Even though mostly it's more a shooter, but there will be times when you go "OMG what was that!?" or "OMG that's terrible!" in the sick way =) Don't worry, it's awesome^^

Don't like it too much. Enemy AI didn't impress me and and most of the weapons I liked were undereffective. The game feels like it has variety but never gives incentive to stray from default much.

No multiplayer either.

Meh, it's playable and has an interesting plot twist but mostly it was boring to me.

Man, people in here really took the troll's bait. I'm glad he's decided to "redirect" us "to the moon", so now people who actually have a measured opinion or something to say can speak without being crowded out by the troll and the people arguing with him.
I'm glad you read the crap i typed, but it's sad to see you dismiss anyone who doesn't love your little game as a troll. I truly dislike the game, as i've posted many many times.

Back on topic. One thing i haven't touched on are the "scary" parts of the game. I get the shits playing minecraft (those damn caverns a scary sounds), and i found the game far from scary. The atmosphere was pretty shallow. "woooo this room has a flickery light"
There's nothing psychologically scary, it's just people with distorted voices jumping out or mumbling to themselves.
The scariest part is near the begining when you get your first plasmid. The way his bones crack and snap is horrific. About all the game did right for me.
You just don't like being called out for what you are. The reason you are a troll is because you use hyperbolic negative language in a thread about a game you know the majority of the gaming public likes a great deal. You are a troll because you combed through the posts to find someone who didn't quote you who called you a troll so that you could call foul and start arguing with someone else.

Now "would you kindly" piss off, please? I didn't quote you because I don't have any desire to talk to you.
You didn't quote me because you was don' gon' went 'n trolled.
"Tell me about Bioshock. Is it as great as everyone says?"
There's the fucking point of the thread. I put my opinion out there. If you're going to cry every time someone talks shit about your little game then you should make sure to have a tissue at hand to catch all your little fanboy tears. I don't see how my own opinion hurts you so badly as to cry every time i call this game shit.
Either way, he's got the game, and the opinion of the rest of the thread with an IQ above 12.

I was genuinely scared when I first saw the Houdini Splicers, and it's the first game in a long time to have actually scared me properly. To be fair, when I played it the Houdinis didn't just jump out of nowhere, they actually came up and disappeared after I saw something in the corner of my eye, snuck up on me to attack, and generally creeped me out without having to resort to the 'JUMP! BOO!' scares that I expected. The gameplay is pretty damn good, though potentially broken in some minor ways (though that may just be personal favouritism actually on my part, regarding certain weapons and Plasmids...). The best part really is the atmosphere, it really does suck you in and you'll spend hours playing the game without realising where the time's gone. It is one of those rare games that could truly be considered 'compelling' and 'cinematic'.

Overall? Definitely worth you buying, and besides, if you don't like it (which is perfectly possible) then you can always trade it in for something better :p.

The game gives a good rush with its quite cool sound design. Beyond that, it's a boring shooter. Tried it. Fell asleep an hour or two in. I understand "it may get better", but I find it very not fun having to shoot yourself through everything every time. Coupled with sick concepts of... things... it was just hard to swallow (aka be immersed).

Well it's about an entire city that has fallen to civil war en chaos because most of its genetically enhanced populace lost its mind.

So yeah, there are some scary bits. But it's aaalllll good.

First I just want to say that I don't think Bioshock is perfect, far from it. If we want to list bad stuff in Bioshock, the list gets pretty long. For me, personally, almost all of that just falls away in front of the story, for my own personal reasons. Well, except for hacking. That one factor alone keeps me from replaying it.

Now, my real point here was where you stated your opinion, which is all well and good, and afterwords you mentioned how it is "sad to see how many people could enjoy this tripe." I was a bit hasty in my earlier analysis of this statement, but at first glance it implies an insult at the people who do like the game. I can see that isn't the case, and that I give the same sentiment, except in reverse.

So, what we have here is just an opinion war. Everyone please move on with your lives.

......Aesop Rock logo..... Am I retarded or something? Of course it's the None Shall Pass cover. gah.
