The stoy and atmosphere is good, but everything about the gameplay is broken and fundamentally flawed.

The story is very well done - especially for a console "shooter" (which is primarily the reason it got so much hype). The gameplay is well balanced but not too difficult. The difficulty curve definitely feels geared towards consoles and people generally used to Halo.

I played it on PC because I do not own a console system and I definitely enjoyed it. The gameplay might not be that difficult, but the story and atmosphere were able to suck me in. It's not so much scary as it is creepy, although certain parts do mesh creepy and horror together pretty well.

Don't expect complex gameplay or many other challenges surrounding that aspect. Overall I liked it because of the story and the immerse atmosphere that has similarities to reading a book - it's somewhat linear but it feels like you're part of a different and distinct universe.

It's like HL2. Not really good at anything.
Unlike HL2, it tries the whole RPG thing aswell, and fails miserably. It's a crap shooter, a crap RPG, a crap story. Just overall crap, BUT i did like the graphics.
As for the hacking game, just...wow.
Don't listen to this man, he is wrong. And possibly trolling.
It's an opinion. I hated the game with a passion. Not just because of what the reviewers had built up, but because it was sad to see how many people could enjoy this tripe.
Well, there's something strange about that. You seem to hate the game ONLY because of what other people thought about it. You really just said that it was overrated, but you haven't explained WHY.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not like you have to explain yourself to me. By all means, ignore the shit out of this message. But if you DO want to defend your opinion, at least do it right.
Plasmids are useless in every sense of the word except where the game forces you to use them. Hit detection is terrible, crossbow bolts phase through peoples' heads all the time. Enemies have more health than you, and can takes entire clips of machine gun ammo to the face, and I'm talking about basic mooks here. There's virtually no ammo, I had more in Silent Hill 2, and this gets to point that it should be classified as a fighting game and not a shooter since you'll be spending far more time beating people to death than shooting them (I wish I could get the plasmid where I could pull ammo out of my ass that disintagrates upon death like the enemies get too). Have I defended the opinion I agree with to in a manner sufficient to you?

I only played bioshock 2, but It can't be that different. I think they're 3 main appeals to the bioshock games: tactical RPG elements, the atmosphere and of course the combat.

I liked the way i could choose the plasmids to work for my play style (shoot it till it dies, Im not that creative) and the whole, hacking combat drones, making big daddies help in a fight and hacking stuff, was a nice little distraction from the combat

The atmosphere of the game is something to comend. It feels dark and suffocating, like your at the bottom of the - oh wait yeah, you are - some of the things, like the little sisters, I genuinly wanted to do the good thing because the idea of killing this little girl for a few measly ADAM points made me feel sick. The big daddies and their creation spooked me and the big sisters from no.2 felt well, evil, i really wanted them to die.

The combat was fun, the whole use of plasmids was fun, sure it was a basic first person shooter, but hey! bees out of the hand, what could go wrong with that? not to mention all the non-combat plasmids, they were fun

The first half of the game is eerie and rather unsettling, but you'll reach a point where you are basically a mountain that can shoot things. You'll be unstoppable, and the game will cease to be creepy.

As a concept, it's great. Refreshing characters (Big Daddys have such a sad quality about them) and it's an interesting idea overall. It just doesn't.. live up to it all.

I congratulate the developers that they've tried to make it more story orientated, but every reviewer seemed to go schitzo' over the fact a game had a plot twist in it and hailed it as the prodigal son.

It's a very good template for what more games I'd like to see in the future however.*

*I personally think Alan Wake is a good example.

Man, people in here really took the troll's bait. I'm glad he's decided to "redirect" us "to the moon", so now people who actually have a measured opinion or something to say can speak without being crowded out by the troll and the people arguing with him.
I'm glad you read the crap i typed, but it's sad to see you dismiss anyone who doesn't love your little game as a troll. I truly dislike the game, as i've posted many many times.

Back on topic. One thing i haven't touched on are the "scary" parts of the game. I get the shits playing minecraft (those damn caverns a scary sounds), and i found the game far from scary. The atmosphere was pretty shallow. "woooo this room has a flickery light"
There's nothing psychologically scary, it's just people with distorted voices jumping out or mumbling to themselves.
The scariest part is near the begining when you get your first plasmid. The way his bones crack and snap is horrific. About all the game did right for me.
You just don't like being called out for what you are. The reason you are a troll is because you use hyperbolic negative language in a thread about a game you know the majority of the gaming public likes a great deal. You are a troll because you combed through the posts to find someone who didn't quote you who called you a troll so that you could call foul and start arguing with someone else.

Now "would you kindly" piss off, please? I didn't quote you because I don't have any desire to talk to you.
You didn't quote me because you was don' gon' went 'n trolled.
"Tell me about Bioshock. Is it as great as everyone says?"
There's the fucking point of the thread. I put my opinion out there. If you're going to cry every time someone talks shit about your little game then you should make sure to have a tissue at hand to catch all your little fanboy tears. I don't see how my own opinion hurts you so badly as to cry every time i call this game shit.
Either way, he's got the game, and the opinion of the rest of the thread with an IQ above 12.
Still don't want to talk to you. Still not going to argue with you. Find another target.

I found it enjoyable and recently completed it again. Admittedly, it was only for the second time out because once you've played it once and finished it, any atmosphere or tension or whatever is pretty much gone. It had an interesting environment, good story, decent gunplay (Although, as someone else said, get the right tonics and you'll only ever need the wrench) and has a cool enemy in the shape of the Big Daddies.

The downsides are mainly the hacking game, which is unbelievably appalling, the controls on 360 feel a bit...off and the ending is...well, play and see how tacked on it feels for yourself. Like someone said, it's good and immersive up til the "golf" part. Then after that, it really becomes more of a run and gun style game with a fetch quest, followed by an escort mission.

And as for those complaining about the Vitachambers basically ruining the game, you do know you can turn those off in the options menu? There's an achievement/trophy for doing the whole game without them on, I think.

It's awesome.

.
.
.
END. :p

I wouldn't really put it in 'scary', but it depends on what you find scary. Sometimes it is kinda scary to hear voices out of nowhere talking some creepy shit. I have to admit I thought I heard someone, very bioshock-style when I was out once, and I kinda creeped out.

Also, DON'T PLAY ON EASY. It's just too damn easy, ruins everything.

The first playble bit will make a little bit of poo come out of you but other than that, it's more like the crazy guy sitting next to you on the bus, that is till you start getting the kick ass guns then it's pretty much a weird FPS game.

I found myself playing like any other FPS game, I never really used the plasmids as attacking things, more just to solve puzzles (using the fire one to melt ice etc).

Gameplay wise its not amazing but its good and gets the job done and at the end of the day killing stuff works like it should.

But the reason to play it is for the story, which may just be one of the greates stories in video game history, plus the atmosphere built around it is perfect. I highly recomend it, it's definitly one of the best games ever.

Ignoring the big flame war that is starting, the game is quite creepy at the start, where every splicer is a huge threat, but towards the end of the game, where combat is slower paced due to you and your enemies having more health, it isn't as scary.

Great game though.

I'm not a fan of console FPS's, but it's all about story and atmosphere. Don't be afraid to stop and look around.

Might I ask where this point is? All of the members of my family stopped at a point in the storyline, universal.
When you're chasing down that plastic surgeon guy, right around there I just lose interest every time. Not the same exact point but usually directly before, during, or soon after the encounter with that guy.

It has a creepy vibe to it but it's nothing too scary.
It has a pretty good plot that has a good plot twist. There are also various sub-plots that you can piece together with audio logs.

Steinman's mildly creepy. As is Fort Frolic. Nowhere near as scary as its spiritual predecessor (System Shock 2, that is).

Personally, I liked the story a lot. One of the best plots I've come across - for an FPS, anyway. Gameplay? Well, sure, it's easy. Sure, it has its issues. The enemies could certainly use more variety.

All the same, I had plenty of fun with it, but I'm odd like that.
