Family themed reunions get me every time. My $0.02 psych eval would probably pin it on my parents being divorced right before I was born.

Anyway, anything from the pets making it home in "Homeward Bound" to June meeting her half sisters for the first time in "Joy Luck Club" only to tell them their mother is dead, I tend to get a little teary. Hm... Mulan being greeted by her father makes me misty too... maybe it's a Ming-Na Wen thing I have.

The play Sylvia always makes me cry at the end too. SO maybe pets and parents.

I also got a little misty at several points in Memory of Light as characters I have been with for thousands of pages either died or had their last little moments in the sun.

Good grief, this is starting to sound like I just sob my way through most media. :D

And how could I forget. Artax.

It's called A Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Some of you may have heard of it, and some of you may not. If you want a book grounded firmly in real life, go for it. Or don't. That's not why I'm here.

I've read a lot of books, seen a lot of films and shows. Played a lot of games. No piece of media has ever made me cry, though I have felt very emotional towards them. I could say this is the first book (or piece of media in general) that has ever made me cry. That wouldn't quite be true. 'Crying' implies I made some sort of sound. I stayed quiet, because I didn't want to break the moment. So I'll say it's the first book that has ever made me shed a tear.

I don't know if that's a confession or an endorsement, but there you go.

For added discussion value, what was the first piece of media to make you shed tears? Or what caused the most emotional response in general, be it a physical or internal one?
I KNEW YOU MEANT JOHN GREEN BEFORE I CLICKED IN THE THREAD! OH YES. That book was so awesome. So fantastic. Do please please read the rest of his books. Also perks of being a wall flower and will greyson will greyson. So worth your time. So worth it.

ABOUT WHAT?
Its about about love between two teenage cancer survivors.
Prior to this, I had read Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns.

I had to find those on the internet, though. It was really gratifying to walk into WHSmith's and see it on a shelf. Guy deserves all the success ever.

Seriously, dude? Aeris's death in FF7,the beginning of UP,The Lion King,Sasuke's near death,Haku and Zabuza's death in Naruto,The passing of the Merry Go and White Beard in One Piece,Kamina's death in Gurren Lagann, nothing? Really? You feeling ok?
I don't watch Naruto, and I'm following the Funimation dub of One Piece, so I've yet to get to the Whitebeard saga.

All the other stuff? Nah, not too much in the way of physical reaction.

What is with people and the beginning of Up. Like it was sad, but I wasn't invested in any of the characters at that point so it's just like, another old person story. What really got me though was near the climax when he looks at the book again, because you had all that build up about what it meant.

Anyway, list:

Titanic (absolute first time watching a sad movie, not counting all the sad bits in animated Disney movies)
Air
Naruto (in chronological order)
-Rock Lee vs Gaara
-Naruto vs Sasuke
-Sakura + Chiyo vs Sasori
-Sasuke vs Itachi (when Itachi touches Sasuke's forehead again, I just...)
Clannad After Story
Gintama
-The stupid Jerry story
-The end of a lot of the arcs. Some of them start out completely insane and leave you in tears.
The Dark Knight
Up
Toy Story 3

Hey, did you know that Neo is actually the One? I know! I mean, sure it's an anagram, but I just didn't put it together...
...
Despite having watched it for the first time about 10 years ago, I never noticed that it was an anagram... God I feel stupid.
Don't feel too bad - I was at school with a guy who, no joke, though Keanu's "hacker name" was Neil.

Seriously. He thought that during the badass climactic battle scene in the subway station, the guy actually shouted "My name...is Neil!"

What a tit.
Haha, wow, thanks for that, now I don't feel nearly as bad about myself :D

As much as I hate to admit it, when it comes to sad films, I'm a crier. I always have been.

Bambi, The Fox and the Hound, The Lion King, Black Beauty, Charlotte's Web... Actually, when I was a kid, I don't think I ever got that upset about humans in movies.

I'm still pretty bad for it. I cried during UP, all of the Toy Story's, multiple times at that one bit in The Shawshank Redemption, The War Horse, I could go on. When I say cry though, I don't mean wailing and throwing my head back in anguish, I just tend to shed a few silent tears. Apart from Black Beauty, when I was five or six, I locked myself in my room so my mom wouldn't see me bawling my eyes out.

Books, video games or any other kind of media doesn't affect me in the same way, maybe I just don't have the imagination.

The Walking Dead.

The scene with Kenny hit me like a truck and I started to weep a little, but then came the ending and stomped on what's left of me and all I could do for hours was to make waterfalls like a baby...

Persona 4 made me cry TWICE.

One I will not specify because of massive spoilers, but the other was the ending.

It made me so sad to say goodbye to all of my friends that I got to know so well. And Teddie's monologue at the very end was the final killing blow.

It's just... perfect.

Only 2 films have ever made me shed a tear. No books or games (although TWD came close).

The Iron Giant is one. Yeah, yeah I know there's a happy ending, but when shit's getting - and gets - real at the end, you don't know that! Plus I was like 10.

The other I'll admit is pretty weird. I think I was just kind of emotional that night because I can't imagine getting teary-eyed over it in my regular frame of mind. Anyway, the movie is Crash.
If you've seen the movie you probably know what scene I'm talking about. I'd say it's the film's most iconic moment. Definately powerful, but I still can't figure out why it got to me so much.

There are three pieces of media that really stick out in my mind.

-The Hobbit, the ending really. Not to much crying just a tear or two.

-The movie click... Yea the one with Adam Sandler and the remote... No joke

-Finally, the movie Marley And Me. Both me and my brother were broken down crying, at the theatre. And I had never seen my brother cry before.

As a side note, it was not just the first viewing that made me cry. ANYTIME I watch those two movies I always end up in tears at the ending's.

I cry at everything, Remembrance day ceremonies make me cry. Bloody hell some commercials make me cry.

The first piece of media where I shed a tear was probably The Lion King but the first one that had me all out bawling was the book Where the Red Fern Grows I was about 9 years old and I remember walking into the kitchen where my gran and dad were talking and the look of horror they had when they saw me.

And the song 26 cents "A penny for your thoughts and a quarter for the call." I tear up just thinking about that line. [Context!: I've moved across the Atlantic four times in my life, the first time I was 6 years old. Every time leaving friends and family and inevitably losing touch with some of them.]

To this day I refuse to watch or read anything that is a potentially upsetting unless I'm on my own, then I can be a big baby and no-one will judge me except me.

Wept like a little girl multiple times throughout ME3
Wept when I thought MC was dead in Halo 3
Wept when I heard Alfred cry in TDKR
Wept during that one scene in Shawshank Redemption
Wept like a little girl after a certain part of A Storm of Swords
Wept like a little girl Boromir died
Wept like a little girl when Aragorn says: you bow to no one (no idea why cause this is a very happy scene...)
Wept like a little girl when Frodo and company sail away
Wept after a certain scene in Skyfall
Wept like a little girl near the end of A Game of Thrones
Wept twice in Borderlands 2
Wept at the end of Mostly Harmless
Wept like a little girl at the end of Bastion

I will cry an ocean if a certain character in A Dance with Dragons actually turns out to be dead.

The first one would have been FF7, Aerith's death. It was the first time I'd ever encountered a game that took someone away from me for good- and I liked her very much, which didn't help my composure. I was unprepared.

Final Fantasy 10's ending finally did me in. I was completely unphased by FF7's Aerith. =P
I think FF10 made me feel very uneasy throughout the entire game, and that feeling changed from the game being weird to cognitive dissonance, and what really fucked things over for me was that I saw it coming a mile away so the pressure continuously built up.
