Level small guns first hacking and picklocking should be maxed eventually as they limit what content you can see. Also don't read books before you get the perk that doubles your skillgain from bocks. that way you should get all skills really high in the end. You should raise luck through the perk you get early on since it gives you 1 in every skill. Ad the numbers and +1 luck is one of the best perks you can choose at low levels :)

Almost finished downloading on steam, advice on how to get the best experience out of it?
Play vanilla for a few hours first then you should have an idea what kind of mods you want to look for and add on. The community over at fallout3nexus.com has assembled a great number of quality mods. One Fallout's strongest features is the mods.

Don't look at any spoilers. And the best DLC is Broken Steel in my opinion if you plan on getting any.
I'd include Point Lookout as well, I quite liked the area and the quest around it.

And really, it depends what you're looking for. As far as realism goes, I've got a few good mods loaded up that switch the weapons out for real-life equivalents.

I do believe the best way to enjoy the game is to stop for a bout ten minutes and think about what you would do were you thrust into the exact same situation and than do it. Also, all the DLC add to the game, but yeah, Broken Steel is by far the best.
I usually try to add RP even to non-RPGs and Fallout 3 has RPG elements right? But yeah, even if I play like, COD multiplayer, I try to imagine what my character is thinking, and shape him to be as much like me as possible. Unfortunatly this makes it so a lot of DMs consist of me hiding in some bushes hoping nobody shoots me :3

I have windows 7 and I can't play the game, contacted bethesda support, they say no patch is on the way so windows 7 can run it
I run it without problem on Windows 7 x64. Have you checked all your settings and drivers?

Oh, it's definitely a bad idea, but I think I'll do it anyway. It might have to wait until October though, since that's when uni term starts again and I can borrow it.
Just checked Steam, and yeah, I'm borrowing, not buying. So I'll probably do it in early October. Look out for it!

...and please be nice!

Double and triple checked, first contacted steam support(bought via steam) and then got forwarded to bethesda support, only answer I got was an insult: "You should read the recommended specs, it doesn't say Windows 7 on it".

EDIT: I press play, fallout menu pops up, press play there too and it stops working. Sometimes I don't even get the fallout menu screen, but the stopped working message instead.

Sadness commenced.

I'm sorry you were exposed to customer no-support. Have you tried the Unofficial Patch? Also there are some fixes in the steam forums that help fix some problems.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1328904 - Most often recommended fix
http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3808 - Unofficial Patch

Play the game fresh without letting a forum full of people spoil the goings on of the game.
My game, I shall play it as I wish to.
Then why the hell did you ask us?
To help me decide what to do, and have the most funz. It's just that ultimately I will do whatever. And whatever is following what random forum people say.. NEVERMIND

I think he was trying to give honest advice. And to be fair, that is a valid answer to your question, and I'll even agree with it.

It's a game that's best when your going into it fresh. Play it blind for the first time, then when you've beaten it, get into the mods, and what-not and look around for little things you might have missed. The exploration is the best part of the game, don't deprive yourself of it.

There's some stimpaks early on in your dads clinic place. Take them. Also take the medicine bobblehead in there. I think you can get it later, but probably only once.

Make your character how you want to. By this I mean, don't worry too much about peoples advice with skill placement. It's your dude, and part of the fun is making him have the skills you want him to.

If you use energy weapons, do the replicated man quest early.

If small guns, then if you find a clue about some treasure in a metro station(the clue, not the treasure) follow it.

Fine, be that way, be logical.

Then it seems like you asked for no real reason? I'm confused.
