OK...I was just about to go copy my mod list plus few extras but seems you have it covered. I would just like to say though, that the ranged combat I always found fine, it was just the hand to hand that wan't great. As I usually play a sniper/assassin type I didn't realise how problematic the melee combat could be until my 3rd or 4th playthrough. One on one wasn't too bad as long as they didn't try to outflank you but as soon as they weren't going for a head on fight you might as well just spin in circles pressing attack. I think there's a lock on mod for hand to hand as well as the other combat revamp mods.

Also, one thing I should point out re characters and levelling. Your stats increase relative to the number of skills that use that stat that you have raised in between levelling up. So try using your non career skills a lot. This means your stats will increase more when you level up.

This means that in a way it is sometimes better to have your career skills be all the ones you won't use very much and your secondary skills being the ones you will normally use. You will start out very unskilled in the skills you need but at low levels they rise very quickly and will give you decent stat boosts early on. It means it is easier to control when you level up too. As the game scales to your level it isn't really that important to gain levels compared to raising your skills and stats.

By that logic you could say that games are for people with no imagination. Just imagine your big adventure in Cyrodiil all in your head.

And as for the OP, Oblivion was one of the worst games I've ever played. HOWEVER, it's so damn mod friendly that your purchase shall not be in vain. See, the level scaling ruined Oblivion for me and I couldn't keep playing past level ten, but I've heard that Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul will fix that problem. I'm sure I'll eventually try it as I've just recently started a different mod after not touching the game for years.

The mod I started is Nehrim, and it's a TOTAL CONVERSION MOD. That's right, it's a completely different game with different gameplay mechanics, different world, different story, different lore, and it's vastly superior to Oblivion, and it also does away with any hint of level scaling. It isn't perfect, and still suffers from some Oblivion-ish problems, but I can't recommend it enough. The only problem it has is the lack of point and click fast travel, but you can mod your mod and put it back if you like (yo dawg). And it does have some type of fast travel, but it's more like Morrowind or Gothic. Oh yeah, and it's a little harder than Oblivion.

That's what I usually do when I am not playing a game. I use my imagination to progress in the storyline of whatever character I'm playing on at the moment.

I found this kinda funny
I was told to NOT use archery because it's worthless, yet it's the only type of combat that is actually taking me somewhere, since my magic runs out quickly and lolmelee

Please explain the logic behind this because I really don't understand how one could come to this conclusion.

That's the thing - we're well past the point of text adventures. This isn't pen and paper - it's TES. You shouldn't need imagination to fill in the flaws.

I did enjoy the game although the leveling system did make it drag on more than it should have, and going into Kvatch too early or too late did make things extraordinarily difficult. I may go back to it at some point, when I've had my fill of the oncoming holiday releases. So sometime next summer perhaps.

a thief has a hard time at the start off the game. But as a thief you should really try to backstab your way through most of the encounters. Once your sneak gets high and you get your hands on some chameleon items or spells you can open up with a short blade crit on most enemies which are pretty deadly.

I feel alot has improved since morrowind in the skill department. Graphics don't concern me to much aslong as it's not triangles, voice acting sucked.
The main pull for me about oblivion has always been the quests. Almost every quest really gives you the feeling they went out of their way to try to avoid cliché's and I think that if you allow yourself a little imagination roleplaying they can really draw you into the world as a whole

Personal roleplaying and imagination can give a personal touch and involvement in the world. Treat quests as experience and loot options and for all the cutscene's and conversation options in the world your going to feel like a murderbot in an alien world. The only person who can personalize an experience is you.

Played it on Xbox 360, found no fault in it whatsoever.
Enjoyed it, I still do.

Mods are for people without any imagination.
I hate that quote. People who install/make mods are people who can imagine how good a game can be. Even a game they think is phenomenal, they imagine a way for it to be even better. People who are against mods usually tend to be the ones who look down on anything without a logo/brand attached. Not only do professional game devs make mods in their off time, but modders sometimes get noticed by studios and hired due to their mods. I would say someone who refrains from mods are people limited in scope. After all, DLC/expansions are just mods.

People who want condiments on their food must not have any imagination either.

I've always enjoyed the idea of mods, and indeed many mods are great, but this is one of the aspects I've always hated. I tend to uninstall games when I'm done with them to save hard drive space, but every once in a while I get that inkling to play Oblivion or Skyrim again and I have to set aside a good couple hours the day before to reinstall all the mods so I have time to play afterwards.

Get the mods and pimp out your game the way you want. Otherwise, tough it out the vanilla way.

Easy peasy, I don't mind mods, mods can make a game a bit more fun or add fun things, BUT people that buy a game, play it for an hour and then HAVE to resort to mods and such that alters the game in a significant way without even playing the game that much, they are just wasting their imagination by letting other people mess with the game they bought. Might aswell sell the game if you're not going to play that game, but instead choose to change to game to something else to play it.

Good. Now put it on the shelf and go install Morrowind. Hell, Daggerfall and Arena are free.
This fine Sir understands it. Morrowind is the way to go.
I did give it a try
worst game I have ever played*
might give it another try, but not anytime soon

*I measure my games in how much fun I had with them, not their quality, and Morrowind was boring, dull and exasperating
I'm surprised you played a lot of Daggerfall and didn't like Morrowind. I can understand liking Oblivion over Morrowind because of the dumbed down RPG mechanics, but Daggerfall and Morrowind were nothing but RPG mechanics. I suppose if you made a character with low athletics and a low speed attribute, you might find travel really boring as it was early game. Well, if you do go back, either stick it out (part of the fun is watching your character grow in every way, including running speed), or make a custom character that has high speed, strength, and athletics starting out. It will remove travel as a chore for first-time players.

I can understand that. I think you should give the game a fair chance before you go changing it, but mods can be great for ironing out the little faults that prevent you from liking a game. I found the first STALKER nearly unplayable due to some of the bugs and that damnable view-bob that made me sick. Mods fix these things, allowing me to enjoy what was an otherwise great game.

I can understand your point of view though. It's a shame when people might be passing up an experience they could really enjoy that's right there for them just because they immediately want to change everything about the game.

elder scrolls games are platforms for modding. they are pretty decent games to play vanilla, but its the modding that really makes them shine and become my favourite games

thing is, what I mostly liked about Daggerfall was the dungeon crawling, it was very atmospheric and intense, Morrowind was very tedious on that, and the main difference that completely broke it for me was the combat
I know both use off-screen dice-rolls, but idk, it just really bothered me a lot more in Morrowind
but who knows
I placed it on my "hate it, but I'm willing to give it another try" list, not the "whoever is seen mentioning it shall be shot on sight" list =P
