So far I am liking it, I don't plan on buying any DLC's due to the fact the only ones I seem to like are the ones Bethesda make. However, I tried online mode, got my ass handed to me, shot some people. Got some guns and manged to get to level 8. After today, I'm going to give single player a go. However the reason I made this thread is to ask a few questions.

1) What gun should I be using on average?

2) Care to share some pointers?

3) Is hunting a good means of getting additional XP?

Right then past those, I want to ask you to share stories of the online gameplay. Fun moments you had, amazing things you did. Anything you feel the need to share.

The challenges are worth doing simply for the entertainment value (hunting, marksman, treasure hunting) plus you get a lot of extra money and decent character perks when you complete them.

I would get the Undead Nightmare DLC once you finish the story. I have recently been playing it and it is pretty good.

Rockstar is one of the only company that puts out good DLC. Undead Nightmare is an expansion quality DLC.

my personal gun usage was mainly the strongest revolver i had for close range, repeater for medium range and a rifle for anything the repeater couldnt hit.

stick with the Winchester repeater as soon as you get your hands on it.

always carry something to refill your dead eye (tobacco or moonshine)

don't be afraid to gamble.

If you don't get the dlc you can't get the TOMAHAWK! Oh the fun you can have slaughtering injuns with their own weapon.

Even though you don't want to get any of the DLC, I seriously recommend you get the Undead Nightmare expansion. OT:

1) That's down to your personal preference. Personally though I'd recommend using the rifles, they seem to be really effective at most ranges.

2) Avoid water. Cowboys can't swim. Try to conserve ammo by using a combination of the lasso and the bowie knife. Thrown weapons embedded in foes can be retrieved via looting their corpse.

3) You should do these if you can. They'll always offer up rewards that will make your life during the campaign a little easier.

Rockstar actually does generally good DLC. The Lost and the Damned outshines the main game of Grand Theft Auto IV.

I haven't and am not planning on ever buying Undead Nightmare, but I just hate zombies. Most other people seem to love it to death.

Early in the game, you're not going to notice much difference between the guns you can get. Later on, just go with whatever fits your style. I tended to prefer faster shots and more rounds, as I'd rather not hide behind cover all the time while waiting to reload.

1: the guns are all pretty commonly used,so ammo is never an issue, but i stuck with either a repeater, shotgun,or revolver.

2:search every square inch of all gang locations you can find, they usually have new weapons among the freshly made corpses;it's a lot cheaper to buy ammo for a Henry Repeater and some health items to clear out a hideout than it is to buy a new gun that showed up in the gunsmith's store (in my experience, anyway)

3:i especially liked the ending to Red Dead's campaign mode,it makes you feel like you just got done watching a spaghetti western.Undead Nightmare is basically an alternate ending to the main campaign, and is also pretty cool.

1.Rifles do some good automatic aiming and it doesn't hurt that rifle damage is usually higher than most weapons.

2.Use the stagecoaches as much as possible, (Don't worry about money, you can get a lot from hunting and trading.) because horse riding can get repetitive. FAST.

Don't finish the story unless you want to deal with sadness.

Watch out for Cougars and Mountain Lions. They'll nom your horse.

3. If you are looking for XP, do bandit fort raids or the co-op missions. Both are really neat and can be done with a buddy.

Oh yes, stories. Right off the train in Armadillo, I decided to get a hang of the controls. The game gliched when I was jumping and brought me straight to the roof of the saloon. Good times...

Right then past those, I want to ask you to share stories of the online gameplay. Fun moments you had, amazing things you did. Anything you feel the need to share.
1) What gun you should use depends entirely on your preferred gunfighting style. If you prefer running in guns blazing then you should use a pistol or revolver; anything OTHER than the Cattleman is a decent choice. If you prefer to use cover and pick off your enemies one-by-one, then you should use a rifle. Personally, I love the Winchester, but the Evans Repeater has much more power to it. Sniping is an absolute no-brainer, so I won't even bother trying to give you a hint on that one. Alternatively, you could do what I do; soften them up with thrown Dynamite and Fire Bottles, then use whatever gun you like to finish them off.

2) If you're playing in multiplayer against other Human players (i.e. not doing the hideouts) then spam the High-Power Pistol by jamming the fire button as fast as you can. I KNOW it's spamming, and I KNOW I'll get flamed for suggesting it, but frankly, everyone else does it, so why shouldn't you?
Also, if you're outgunned, it's better to stick to cover and wait for your health to regen when you're against AI. When you're outgunned against Humans and they won't stop killing you, you're probably better off jumping to another session. Sometimes it really isn't worth the hassle of having to turn around and defend against some prick who won't leave you alone.

3) No. Hunting is an excruciatingly slow way of getting XP. The quickest, and most popular way, is to do the gang hideouts.

Also. It might be worth your while getting the DLC. They're all very good, especially Undead Nightmare, and there are advantages given to online players with the DLC, such as better weapons.
