Fallout and Fallout 2. I probably wouldn't have bought them if it wasn't for Fallout 3, but bloody hell they're awesome.

I, on the other hand, didn't like Deus Ex or Planescape Torment. But I did like many other old games, like Diablo series, Black and White, MDK (holy crap, loved that game), Max Payne...

I'm of the opinion that age doesn't matter - if I wouldn't like a game few years ago, I won't like it today.

Some have been said but, Baldur's Gate series, Dungeon Keeper Gold, Arcanum, Thief series, Planescape:Torment, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Clive Barker's Undying, Max Payne 1..
Also, here's a tricky one, I think in the States it's called "Severance, the blade of darkness"; the thing is, the game and I are spanish -as in from Spain- and it's called differently here. It's a cool third person slasher-platformer.

You know what bugs me? Someone should develop some windows or something that's compatible with older games. I mean, I've been gaming for almost two decades! I want to play my oldies! Doesn't anyone see the money in that!? I wanna finish Thief 2, for god's sake!!!

Freespace 2! Lots of fun! Dozens of fighters dogfighting to a backdrop of the biggest capital ships ever seen in a game, capital ships that you can cripple and take down with careful planning and a few wings of bombers. It's aged beautifully.

Careful with character creation if you're playing Fallout 1 and 2. Especially 2. It can make or break you.
Yeah, I noticed that. Luckily I have a guide someone kindly posted from No-Mutants Allowed favorited. :p

Honestly, I hated Deus Ex when I finally got around to trying it. It wasn't the fact that it was overhyped or anything, but I just...wow, it was boring and it looked horrible and after playing about halfway through it I couldn't stand it anymore.

A couple days ago I started playing the original Fallout, though, and I am having a ton of fun with that. There are some people telling me I wasted my SPECIAL points and that I am doing things improperly, but I don't care. I'm having a blast.
I find myself enjoying it, so to each his own I suppose.

Welcome to the Deus Ex brotherhood.
It's the single most awesome thing on this planet. Respect it.

OT: Black and White. So much fun with that, especially teaching my dumb ass wolf the spells. I drop stuff on his head when he didn't get it. Hur hur.

I've been looking into it and my interest has been piqued.

I've been looking into Deus Ex, the fallouts, and Psychonauts, but gotta' get a job first before I start spending a bunch of money on games(and yes, 50 is a lot of money to me)

I did get Half Life though. That game is fun but kind of frustrating.

I've never played this, but I think might just finally have had enough of people telling me great it is. You're the last one sir/ma'am.

Sell it to me. I need something new to play.

I just picked up copies of the Prince of Persia sands of time trilogy and also Jak and Daxter. What great games! I'm so behind the times!

I'm having a freaking blast. Seriously. If any of my consoletard friends tell me that old games all suck, I'm going to whip out this bad boy.

So, I ask you, the Escapist community, what old-school game have you bought and discovered its awesomeness? I'm looking into Fallout 1-2 as we speak.
if you're looking for gold-plated classics like Deus ex then the list is actually fairly small, however here are a few suggestions:

Gold-plated Classics:
UFO Enemy unknown
The longest journey
System Shock 2
Freespace II (need a joystick)

Great Classics:
Duke nukem 3D
Mech Warrior 2 (This is a personal favourite, others may disagree)
Fallout 1/2
Baldurs gate
Planescape torment (I can't vouch for this one personally as I've only just bought it, but i'm assured its of the same calibre as Baldurs gate)
Divine Divinity (a highly underrated gem)
Arx Fatalis (another underrated gem, a little broken in places mind)

These have been mentioned and are very good games but i'm not sure they are quite uber classics, or at least they may not have aged well - Still worth a look mind:

Clive Barker's Undying (Pretty good in a lot of ways, a little scary plenty fun enough, you may have some trouble running it these days, if you're running it on XP run it in 2000 compatibility mode and save often as it will crash)
Max Payne 1 (This is something of a classic to be sure but it may feel old now as so many newer games have copied the bullet time effect, still its definately one to of played)
Dune (I love this personally, its a blend of Adventure and strategy which works very well, probably left at this point though unless you're a fan of Dune fiction)
Dune 2 (progenitor of RTS genre however a new player may find the lack of group select frustrating, plus the AI is pretty poor by todays sandards)

These are all older classics (turn of the century or older), there are newer ones too.

OH, and MDK. If anyone here has played that game other then me it'd be good to know!
MDK - I hated it, sorry. It certainly hasn't aged well anyway.

Last summer, I went and played through Half-Life 1. Honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I'd say the sequel ties with it too.
