Last summer, I went and played through Half-Life 1. Honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I'd say the sequel ties with it too.
Damn I forgot Halflife... How could I forget halflife :)

I recently stopped playing Modern Warfare in favor of the copy of Perfect Dark I just found. (Mind you, it's a console game)

Woah... Another blawst from teh pawst. Surprisingly addicting!

But PC games. I think all the classics I remember have already been mentioned. Especially Black & White. I liked it much more than the second, and there's always that timeless charm about throwing non-believers far into the ocean...

So many lovely "classics" in these lists.

Personally I've recently reinstalled my favourites and am planning a nostalgia play-through of them whenever I get the chance.

The first two instalments of the Thief series.
Deus Ex
and System Shock 2
Oh and Beyond Good and Evil.

Them's this Taffer's all time favourites and she wonders why there's not more like it out there. Personal opinion, of course.

I can't play Fallout or Fallout 2. I've really, really tried, but I have no idea what I'm doing and the best help I've ever been given is "You have to figure things out for yourself cuz it's not dumbed down, consoletard". Thanks, PC elitist douche.

Awesome oldies include, but are not limited to...

The original Unreal Tournament
Total Annihilation*
Vampire The Masquerade : Bloodlines
Neverwinter Nights (I'm told Baldur's Gate was better, but I've never got my hands on it)
Anything Blizzard have ever made. ESPECIALLY The Lost Vikings.
The original, top down GTAs.
Max Payne.
Command & Conquer, both original and Red Alert*.

Little advice, get ready to castrate yourself. It's certainly better than playing Deus Ex!

OT: Started play Morrowind recently. Very awesome.

Bleh, Morrowind isn't THAT old. I'm runnin my copy of Daggerfall through dosbox atm, now THAT is old and VERY awesome.... apart from the fact that all the gold you pick up actually counts towards your encumberance. Total pain in the backside if you try playin as a mage.

OP get a joystick and play Freespace 2, Your life will not be the same ofter that.

Freespace 2! Lots of fun! Dozens of fighters dogfighting to a backdrop of the biggest capital ships ever seen in a game, capital ships that you can cripple and take down with careful planning and a few wings of bombers. It's aged beautifully.
I've been looking into it and my interest has been piqued.
Personally I feel much more comfortable with mouse control, but that's just personal preference. Maybe my joystick isn't very good. Either way it's great.

Planescape:Torment >>> Really, you HAVE to buy this!

I'm playing Parasite Eve on my PSP and it is awesome (despite the horrific random battles)

Never played Deus Ex but heard lots. Anyway, need some help: is it worth getting the GOTY edition and Invisible War for £12 on Steam?

Diablo 2... I still play Secret of Mana and Star Ocean 2...

Hell, classic games are the entire reason behind the virtual console.

I'm having a freaking blast. Seriously. If any of my consoletard friends tell me that old games all suck, I'm going to whip out this bad boy.

So, I ask you, the Escapist community, what old-school game have you bought and discovered its awesomeness? I'm looking into Fallout 1-2 as we speak.
fallout 1 and 2. its one of those games which is brilliant all round except its battle system is
either bad or good depending on the person(generally)

Star Wars: Republic Commando
I've never played this, but I think might just finally have had enough of people telling me great it is. You're the last one sir/ma'am.

Sell it to me. I need something new to play.
It's a squad-based FPS based in the star wars universe that bridges Episode 2 and 3. DON'T WORRY, Anakin doesn't make an appearance and the story actually focuses on the story of Delta Squad (the squad you control) and their missions.

What makes the game stand-out is that it has possibly the best squad controls EVER. Want to give your squad an order? You give orders using the D-pad, and holograms appear wherever the command would send your squadmates. It's kinda hard to describe, so I'll let youtube do it for me.

<youtube=LA8oiV-mZoI>

Oh, and is it just me or have that games graphics aged really well?

OT: Baldur's Gate and...well, Star Wars: Republic Commando.

EDIT- Crap! wrong video. Hope you didn't watch it, that's actually a REALLY good level that's better left un-spoiled. Fixed it now.

Planescape Torment.
Oh FUCK yes. A game where you can be just as awesome as you always wanted...
well, assuming you're a wizard >.>

Also, Fallout 2 is pretty fun. But the writing is nowhere near the level of Torment (also developed by Black Isle). Plus, I've played Fallout 3 before, and prefer it. Although I really miss the Highwayman :(
The closest thing to it is a goddamn Tire Iron called "Highwaymen's friend".
Duh. Hooray for direct reference I guess.
